Kia Kime 92 Leaders Gulde

Dear Scoutmaster :
We are pleased to present the Kia Kima 92 Leaders Guide .
This guide outlines the program planned for 1992 at Kia Kima. We are continuing to
improve the program and facilities each year. The newest feature is Ozark Venture
Base at Kia Kima. Venture Base offers a series of program opportuniti es - canoeing,
backpacking , climbing and rappelling- which use Kia Kima as a base and venture in
to the surroundin g area . We hope you will encourage your Venture-age Scouts to
participate in these activities.
The merit badge offerings cover a wide range and include some new "rotational"
merit badges.
There will be several capital improvemen ts at Kia Kima this year. The biggest project
is our new central hot shower facility for Camp Osage and the nearby handicappe daccessible campsite. Waterlines have been brought to the center of the reservation for
Shooting Sports, the Tower and the Campfire Arena. Flagpoles and Assembly areas
have been relocated in each camp.
This guide is designed to help you and your patrol leaders' council plan your week
at Kia Kima. It includes information on camp promotion and planning, program
opportunitie s and scheduling. We will keep you up-to-date as opening date nears.
Yours in Scouting,

~~

Part One - General Information
Kia Kima is the summer camp program of the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts
of America. It is conducted at Kia Kima Scout Reservation near Hardy, Arkansas. Kia
Kima is an Indian term - it means Eagle's Nest . Kia Kima was made possible by two
major donors - Bolton Smith, who donated the original Kia Kima tract in 1916, and
John W. Cooper, who donated and developed the much larger present site in 1964 in
exchange for the original land. Many other people and organizations have
contributed significant resources to the development of this property for the benefit
of the Scouts of the Chickasaw Council.
Boy Scout troops come to Kia Kima as a unit with their own leadership. Limited
opportunities are available for provisional campers, who come to camp without their
units. More information on provisional camping is included in the Kia Kima 92
brochure for Scouts or by contacting the Scout Service Center.
Kia Kima is subject to accreditation standards of the Boy Scouts of America for longterm camps. It is reviewed and inspected annually by representatives of the National
Council of the Boy Scouts of America for compliance with those high standards. Kia
Kima has earned the designation of a "Nationally Accredited Camp."
Kia Kima is under the supervision of the Executive Board of the Chickasaw Council
and the Council Camping Committee. The committee charged with providing
program planning guidance is called the Kia Kima Advisory Board and is composed
of active Scout leaders from throughout the council. A professional Scouter is
designated as Reservation Director and is on site throughout the camping season.

What is the purpose of summer camp at Kia Kima ?
Kia Kima provides your troop resources it needs for a quality camping experience. It
provides the site - a picturesque hill-country location with woods, a lake, a river, fresh
air and room to roam, the basic facilities - waterfront, tents, archery range, rifle range,
nature lodge, etc.-the equipment - boats, canoes, bows and arrows, rifles, fishing gear,
and trained staff in aquatics, nature, Scoutcraft, field sports, etc.
What will your troop provide? Scout campers, adult leaders, transportation,
sleeping and personal equipment. The troop will also be expected to develop its own
camp program, which will be its plan for taking optimum advantage of camp

facilities, services, and staff. Each troop knows best what advancement requirements
its Scouts need to work on, when a hike or canoe trip would fit in best, when to
schedule a cookout or an intertroop campfire, and call for camp support as needed.
Scout camping at Kia Kima then is a cooperative venture between the camp and the
troop - they work together to create a quality camping experience for the Scouts in
your unit.
A quality summer camp experience includes three categories of time for all Scouts to
participate in activities:
Personal I Advancement

Rank advancement, merit badge work, Venture
activities

Troop Time

This too may include advancement-related
activities like a troop swim, troop time at a
shooting range, campwide games or activities
a troop does by itself.

Personal Interest

This could be working on merit badges, fishing,
just enjoying the out-of-doors or visiting an area
of the camp he has a special interest in.

The troop and the camp staff work together to make sure your troop has an enjoyable
and rewarding summer camp experience.

Advancement at Kia Kima
Summer camp at Kia Kima is the "laboratory of Scouting." There are many
advancement opportunities both in the structured camp program, in the troop site
and as a part of troop activities.
Each Scout at Kia Kima receives a guidebook. Guidebooks are issued to the unit
leader at check-in. The guidebook contains the requirements for each merit badge
offered at Kia Kima and each of the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second and First
Class Ranks which are available at Kia Kima. Kia Kima staff members will record the
Scout's progress in the guidebooks during the week. The troop, as always, is
responsible for judging the Scouts progress toward merit badges and ranks based on
the progress made by the Scout during camp and before and afterward. Kia Kima
provides program resources to assist in achieving advancement goals.
A record of each Scouts progress will also be maintained in the camp administration
building. A leader with any questions may check the records at camp on Saturday
morning or at the Council Service Center in Memphis after the camping season.

Kia Kime 92 Leaders Guide

A list of all merit badges and rank requirements supported at Kia Kima in 1992 is
included in the program planning section of this guidebook.

BSA Leadership Policy
It is the policy of the Boy Scouts of America that trips and outings may never be led

by only one adult. At least two adult leaders, one of whom must be at least 21 years of
age, are required for all trips and outings. The second leader must be at least 18 years
of age.
Many troop committees have been successful in arranging for two leaders to go to
camp. Both of the leaders have more fun, problems of coverage are solved and the
opera ti on is more efficient.
Leaders may rotate if necessary, but at least two adults must be with the troop 24
hours a day. Parents, committee members and other adults who accompany a troop
to camp are serving for the duration of camp as substitute or additional unit leaders
or assistants. They must meet all qualifications for the position in which they serve.
Camp Fees

$90 per Scout or Scouter per week for Camp Cherokee or Camp Osage. $100 per
Scout or Scouter for Ozark Venture Base.
The first adult leader with the troop is free. Fees for the second leader will be
prorated as follows:
1 Scout

Fees for additional leaders will be prorated in a similar manner for troops with over 9
Scouts in camp.
A $30 preregistration fee for each week a Scout is to stay in camp is due by May 15,
1992. Each Scout's $30 deposit is transferable but not refundable. The deposit can
only be transferred to another Scout's deposit.

and additional information are available at the Scout Service Center. A copy is
included in the appendices to this Guide. Campership applications are due May 1,
1992.

Vehicles in Camp
Each camp has ample parking available in designated parking lots. All vehicles must
be returned to the parking lots after unloading gear. No vehicles are permitted in
camp sites.
The speed limit on all camp roads is 15 miles per hour. Adhering to this speed limit
is essential for safety. The use of automobiles in camp is to be held to an absolute
minimum, for both safety and environmental reasons .

Leaving Camp
Any leader or Scout who must leave camp during the week must check out at the
Cooper Administration Building and check back in before returning .

Health and Sa/ety

Health Lodge and Emergency Medical Arrangements
A health lodge is available with a qualified first-aider on duty 24 hours a day. A
physician will also be in camp each week. In addition, we have arrangements with a
local physician and the nearby Baptist Memorial Hospital-Eastern Ozarks for
emergency services. Accident insurance is provided for all Scouts and adults
attending camp. This insurance does not cover sickness, injuries occurring before
camp or chronic conditions. The camp's insurance policy pays the first $150 of
covered expenses. Coverage of expenses in excess of $150 is coordinated with the
Scout's family insurance coverage.

Medical Examinations
Each Scout and leader is required to have a medical form on file upon arriving at
camp. Scouts and leaders under age 40 attending Camp Cherokee or Camp Osage
use the Class 2 Personal Health and Medical Record (No. 4414A) and are required to
have been examined by a physician within the last three years. Scouts and leaders
participating in the Ozark Venture Base programs and all leaders age 40 and over use
the Personal Health and Medical Record Form- Class 3 (No. 4412A) and are required
to have been examined by a physician within the last 12 months. One copy of each
form is included in this guide. Copies are also available at the Scout Service Center.

Sanitation
Latrine facilities are provided at each troop campsite . It is the responsib ility of each
troop to maintain the cleanline ss of these facilities during their stay at Kia Kima.
Toilet paper and cleaning supplies are available at Troop Issue. If maintena nce
problems develop with the equipmen t in your campsite, please contact your program
director or the camp ranger.
There is a designate d location for trash and garbage at each camp.
At Camp Cherokee , troops are issued garbage bags with the provision s for each meal.
The responsib ilities of the clean-up crew include taking the garbage bag to the
designate d central location after the meal. This will minimize any problems with
odors or insects in the campsite.
At Camp Osage, garbage bags are available through Troop Issue. Troops should
deliver their trash to the central location as needed . A trash delivery should be made
wheneve r the bag is full or the bag contains any significan t amount of food waste
(waterme lon rinds, etc.).
There will not be a garbage pick-up run in the troop campsite . Each troop is
responsib le for delivering its own garbage to the central location.
Shower facilities are provided in each troop campsite . In addition, both Camp
Cherokee and Camp Osage have central hot shower facilities. The central facilities
also include bathroom and shower facilities for leaders. There are separate female
leader facilities at Camp Osage. Troops are encourag ed to make sure these facilities
are used properly and maintain ed in a clean manner. Your troop will be asked to
assist in cleaning the central showers.

Campsite Inspections
There will be a daily campsite inspectio n for health and safety purposes . This
inspectio n will be conducte d by a camp commissi oner. Your senior patrol leader will
be advised of the results of the inspectio n at the daily Senior Patrol Leaders Council
meeting. This inspectio n will be measured against health and safety standards and
will not be a competiti on against other units.
On Thursda y, the program commiss ioner or program director will visit your
campsite to review it for campsite improvem ents. This review will be considere d in
determini ng the Honor Troops and the Outstand ing Troop of the Week.

Activities for Adult Leaders
Several activities are planned for adult leaders in camp each week.
Scoutmasters' Roundtables are held on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. These are
meetings with key staff leaders to review program activities and communicate other
important information.
Each morning after breakfast, a Leaders' coffee time is held. One or more key staff
members will be available each day. The purpose of this daily session is to encourage
communication among leaders in camp and with the camp staff. Any problems you
may be experiencing can be addressed at this time. Of course, the reservation director,
program directors and commissioners are available to work with you at any time.
Each week, the Scout Executive visits Kia Kima and hosts a dinner for all Scoutmasters
in camp. You will receive further information after arrival at camp as to the specific
time and location of your week's dinner.
Trainin~

Several special training opportunities will be available for leaders wishing to
participate. These opportunities include the following:

•

Rappelling and Climbing Tower Training - This training is required for your
troop to use the new thirty-foot climbing and rappelling tower in the field sports.
After completing the training, which will be scheduled early in the week, your
troop can schedule a session on the tower.

•

Safe Swim Defense - This training is recommended for all leaders and is required
for all leaders whose troops plan to offer their own swimming activities (including
a troop-led open swim at Kia Kima).

•

Safety Afloat - This training is for leaders who wish to take their units on boating
outings, including Kia Kima canoe trips.

•

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - This basic training covers basic techniques for
CPR. The level of training will be sufficient for the requirements of First Aid and
Lifesaving Merit Badges.

•

Video Training - A library of BSA video-based training will be available at Kia
Kima, including Youth Protection Guidelines, Fast Start and several others.

15

Kia Kime 92 Leaders Guide

Camp Commissioners
Kia Kima needs several volunteer camp commissioners each week to supplement the
camp staff. Camp commissioners are needed for a wide variety of tasks. Commissioner
duty provides an opportunity for adult leaders to see the rest of the camp. Also, it
provides a chance to become involved in the execution of the total summer camp
program. The more adults leaders that participate in this very important program, the
more successful the season will be at Kia Kima.
Commissioner duties include the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•

Conducting daily campsite inspections
Visiting program areas daily
Promoting camp activities
Attend commissioner's meetings with the program director as scheduled
Help with instruction as needed as arranged in advance with the program director
Encourage camp morale and open lines of communication.

Interested leaders should fill out an application and turn it in to the Scout Service
Center before attending camp. An application form is included in this Guide . Camp
commissioners will be selected from the applications received and each selected leader
will be notified. Camp fees will be waived for those leaders selected as camp
commissioners.
Program Areas
Leaders are welcome in program areas at all times. Leaders are encouraged to share
their skills and assist in areas where they are qualified. We do ask that you make

arrangementsin advance with the director of the area, before you become involved in
class sessions. Leaders who are interested in assisting with instruction in specific topics
should complete an application to serve as a camp commissioner and indicate their
interest.

Twilight Activities
Kia Kima offers a variety of evening "twilight" activities. Troops are encouraged to
participate in those activities in which they are interested as a group.

Kia Kima Campfires
Campfires are a highlight of the Kia Kima week. Reservation campfires are held on
Sunday and Friday nights. The Sunday night campfire is an introduction to Kia Kima
traditions and the camp staff. The Friday night campfire is a recognition and fellowship
event. Troop participation is encouraged in the closing campfire. The program director

Order of the Arrow representative will be at the Leaders' Roundtable Sunday evening to
explain the process and make arrangements.
An Order of the Arrow call-out ceremony will be a part of the Friday night reservation
campfire . The Order of the Arrow representative will explain the procedure for
arranging for the call out at the Leaders Roundtable.

Ozark Venture Base at Kia Kima
This year, we are introducing a new program aimed at Venture-age Scouts (aged 13
and above) called Ozark Venture Base. This program includes two programs that use
Kia Kima as base for a week-long trip by canoe or backpacking and two programs,
Climbers Camp and the popular Project COPE which take place primarily on the Kia
Kima property. Complete details can be found in the Program Planning section of
this Guide.
In addition, the Venture Base staff will assist in planning an outpost camping
experience for your troop or day trips in the area for older Scouts.

Part II - Program Planning
This section of the Kia Klma 92 Leaders Guide is designed to help you counsel with
individual Scouts to develop activity schedules for the individual Scouts in your
troop. The first part is a description of the various programs, including merit badges
and other activities offered at Kia Kima. This information includes "prerequisites"
and requirements which should be completed before camp. A detailed daily
schedule for Camp Osage and Camp Cherokee follows. Finally, there is a "program
planning worksheet" for your use in scheduling Scouts in classes (and keeping track
of where they should be!).
There are limitations on many class sizes. Pre-scheduling of Scouts in specific classes
will be available at the Scout Service Center in late May. You should come prepared
with your completed program planning worksheet. You will be notified by mail of
specific times and instructions for pre-scheduling.
In counseling with individual Scouts about their camp schedule, please consider the
following:
•

A quality camp experience includes time for advancement, troop and patrol
activities and personal time.

•

While there are six instructional periods daily, Scouts should generally not be
scheduled into six merit badge classes. Scouts should experience swimming,
boating, rifle, archery, etc., regardless of whether they take these merit badges.

•

Every Scout deserves the chance to learn to swim.

•

Camp evaluations from Scouts overwhelmingl y indicate they were not given
enough free time.

•

We recommend that you take into consideration the location of the program areas
in scheduling the order of classes.

•

Scouts in the New Scout Program for brand new Scouts will be in the program all
day. They will spend the morning in the Scoutcraft areas and the afternoons in
handicraft merit badges, swimming and visiting the rifle and archery ranges.

•

Older Scouts who participate in Project COPE may be scheduled for morning or
afternoon sessions. They may work on merit badges during the time they are not
at Project COPE.

•

Scouts 13 and above may be scheduled for climbing and rappelling training at
the tower. This session runs from 9:00 until 12:00 daily. Your troop may schedule

19

a time to use the tower as a group. Details will be available at the Sunday
Leaders Roundtable.
•

Lifeguard BSA participants will spend almost all their time at the waterfront.

Climbers Camp
Overview
Climbers Camp is designed for Venture age Scouts with a special interest in climbing
and rappelling. Climbers Camp participants learn and practice climbing and
rappelling skills on the Kia Kima climbing and rappelling tower and then go on an
overnight field trip to an area cliff for actual practice.

Details of Program
This program is different from other Venture Base programs in that participants stay
with their troops, except for a field trip . There is opportunity for Climbers Camp
participants to participate on other camp activities throughout the week.
Climbers Camp participants will meet for instruction at the Tower Monday through
Thursday morning from 9:00 until 12:00. The Group will depart for the field trip after
supper Thursday and will return before supper Friday. Participants may take merit
badge classes at other times, but may not be able to complete all requirements because
of the Friday field trip. Participants may, of course, use other camp facilities,
including the waterfront, archery range, rifle range, etc. during free periods. They
may sign up for Project COPE, but will not complete all of the high course because of
the Friday field trip.
Leaders may participate in Climbers Camp, subject to space availability. At least one
leader for every six Scouts must agree to go on the overnight field trip. Troops with
Climbers Camp participants will be expected to assist with transportation for the field
trip.

Special Requirements
Participants must be physically fit for strenuous climbing and rappelling activities.
Participants must bring appropriate personal gear for an overnight camping trip.

Recognition
Upon completion, participants will be eligible for the special Ozark Venture Base
emblem.

Other Venture Base Activities
In addition to the Venture Base week-long programs, the Venture Base staff will assist
in making arrangements for groups wishing to experience different activities in the
Arkansas and Missouri Ozarks. In general, the staff will assist in making
arrangements, but will not accompany groups, which must provide appropriate
leadership .
Suggested activities include:
Mammoth Springs and the Grand Gulf
This field trip heads north from Kia Kima to Mammoth Springs, Missouri. At
Mammoth Springs, you will visit Mammoth Springs State Park, home of
Mammoth Springs, a huge spring which is the source of the Spring River. After
visiting Mammoth Springs, you will tour the nearby Mammoth Springs National
Hatcheries. The group will travel north into Missouri and visit Grand Gulf State
Park, site of the Grand Gulf natural bridge.

Horseback Riding, Cherokee Village and Hardy
This nearby field trip will begin with horseback riding near the original site of old
Kia Kima. You will visit the Cherokee Indian Cultural Center and visit old Hardy
town. Extra costs will apply for horseback riding .

Blanchard Springs Caverns
This field trip will take you to Blanchard Springs Caverns, located in the Ozark
National Forest near Mountain View. These amazing caves are millions of years
old. There are over ten miles of explored caverns. The group will have a guided
tour and spend the rest of the day in the Blanchard Springs area. An extra fee will
apply for the cave tour .

Other Activities
Venture groups may schedule a variety of other activities, including day-long
canoe trips and hiking trips.
Kia Kima will provide program planning assistance and lunch. Individual groups
are responsible for any admission fees and transportation costs. Leadership will be
provided by troops with Scouts participating.

Parents' Night
A Parents' Night program is an excellent way to promote summer camp in your
troop. The program should be held early enough for families to make their plans
around camp. Your district camping chairman and your district Order of the Arrow
Councilman will be happy to help you plan your parents night program and to help
you conduct it.
An example agenda for a camp promotion meeting follows:

Kia Kima Scout Reservati on
Campersh ip Informati on

Through the generosit y of some concerne d supporter s of Scouting, limited funds
are available as "campers hips" to help meet the camp fees of qualified Scouts with a
financial need. In applying for a campersh ip, a Scout and his family are reminded
of the ninth point of the Scout law, A Scout is thrifty. A Scout works to pay his way
and to help others. Scouts are encourag ed to plan ahead and work to pay their way
to camp.
Campersh ips are considere d on a first-come , first-serv ed basis, as long as funds are
available and are subject to the following condition s:
1.

The unit leader secures and complete s the campersh ip applicati on. The
applicatio n is forwarde d to the Scout Service Center for the Council Camping
Committe e to review.

2.

No more than fifty per cent of the camp fee will be granted as a campersh ip .
The maximum campersh ip for 1992 is $45.00.

3.

Campersh ips will not be granted for provision al camping. They are intended
to enable the Scout to attend camp with his own troop.

4.

Campers hips are granted to individua l Scouts. If the Scout who receives the
campersh ip is unable to attend, substituti ons will not be allowed unless a new
campers hip applicati on is filed in the name of the substitut e Scout and
approved by the Council Camping Committe e.

5.

Campers hip applicatio ns must be complete ly filled out. Informati on on the
campersh ip applicatio n will be held in confidenc e.

6.

Candidat es for campersh ips must be registered Scouts in good standing with
their troop.

7.

All applicatio ns must be signed by a parent or guardian, troop leader and the
district camping chairman or represent ative.

It is not the intention to limit the number of Scouts eligible for campersh ips. On the

contrary, we want to stretch the available campersh ip funds to cover as many needy
Scouts as possible.
Campersh ip applicatio ns must be submitted by May 1, 1992 to be considere d by the
Council Camping Committe e.
Unit leaders will be notified by May 16, 1992 of the action taken by the Council
Camping Committe e in approvin g or disapprov ing the campersh ip applicatio n.

Parent's Statement
In consideration of the benefits to be derived, and in view of the fact that the Boy Scouts of America is an
educational institution, membership in which is voluntary, and having every confidence that every precaution
will be taken to ensure the safety and well being of my Scout son/ward, named above, in connection with his
participation in an Ozark Venture Base program of Kia Kima Scout Reservation, I agree to his participation and
waive all claims against the leaders of this trip, officers, agents and representatives of the Boy Scouts of America
and the sponsor of my son/ward's unit. In the event of an emergency, the leader of the activity has my permission
to obtain medical treatment for this Scout at the nearest hospital or doctor, at my expense, to the extent not covered
by insurance carried by Kia Kima Scout Reservation.

I understand that Ozark Venture Base programs are designed to be physically and mentally challenging. I believe
that my son/ward is physically fit to participate in this program. He meets the requirements outlined on the other
side of this form.

Kia Kima Scout Reservation

Ozark Venture Base
Application Information
For a more complete explanation of Ozark Venture Base, please refer to the Kia Kima
92 Leaders Guide.

Participation Requirements
To participate in an Ozark Venture Base program, a Scout must be "Venture-age", at
least 13 years old by arrival at Kia Kima. Kia Kima recommends these programs
only for Scouts who have earned at least the First Class rank.
Venture Base programs are designed to be physically and mentally challenging.
While we endeavor to make participation available to those with physical
challenges, opportunities will, by their very nature, be limited.
All Venture Base programs require a reasonable level of physical fitness.
Participants in the Ozark Trail Backpacking Trek should have some recent
backpacking experience. We recommend that the Scout build up to this event by
taking several backpacking trips of shorter duration during the months before
camp . The Backpacking Merit Badge pamphlet has some excellent conditioning
suggestions.
Participants in the 50 Miler Afloat should be experienced cancers, preferably with
the Canoeing merit badge. In order to participate, a Scout must pass the swimmer
classification test upon arrival at Kia Kima.
All participants are required to have a Personal Health and Medical Record Form Class 3, which requires an examination by a physician within the last 12 months.

Applications and Fees
Applications to participate in Ozark Venture Base programs for 1992 must be
submitted to the Scout Service Center by May 15, 1992. This deadline is necessary
because of the logistics involved with these programs. Each program has a
minimum number of Scouts required before the program will be offered that week.
In addition, there are maximum crew sizes that can be accommodated. Applications
will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be notified by May 22,
1992 of your status in the program. The fee for Ozark Venture Base programs is $100
per Scout per week . A nonrefundable deposit of $30 must accompany the
application by May 15. This deposit can be transferred to another Scout. The extra
fee for Ozark Venture Base is necessary due to staffing and special food and
equipment considerations.
Ozark Venture Base applications must be signed by the Scout's parent or guardian
and unit leader in the spaces provided.

Kia Kime 92 Leaders Gulde
Dear Scoutmaster:
We are pleased to present the Kia Kima 92 Leaders Guide .
This guide outlines the program planned for 1992 at Kia Kima. We are continuing to
improve the program and facilities each year. The newest feature is Ozark Venture
Base at Kia Kima. Venture Base offers a series of program opportunities - canoeing,
backpacking, climbing and rappelling- which use Kia Kima as a base and venture in
to the surrounding area . We hope you will encourage your Venture-age Scouts to
participate in these activities.
The merit badge offerings cover a wide range and include some new "rotational"
merit badges.
There will be several capital improvements at Kia Kima this year. The biggest project
is our new central hot shower facility for Camp Osage and the nearby handicappedaccessible
campsite. Waterlines have been brought to the center of the reservation for

Kia Kima is subject to accreditation standards of the Boy Scouts of America for longterm
camps.

Troop Time
Personal Interest
Rank advancement, merit badge work, Venture
activities
This too may include advancement-related
activities like a troop swim, troop time at a
shooting range, campwide games or activities
a troop does by itself.

1 Scout
2 Scouts
3 Scouts
4 Scouts
5 Scouts
6 Scouts

Fees for additional leaders will be prorated in a similar manner for troops with over 9
Scouts in camp.
A $30 preregistration fee for each week a Scout is to stay in camp is due by May 15,
1992. Each Scout's $30 deposit is transferable but not refundable. The deposit can
only be transferred to another Scout's deposit.

medical officer, he will be entitled to a prorated refund of the balance of his camp fee .
Camperships are available for qualified Scouts with a financial need. Applications
and additional information are available at the Scout Service Center. A copy is
included in the appendices to this Guide.

Troop check-in is scheduled from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm Sunday. Please plan your
schedule accordingly. Troops arriving at camp between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm will
have sufficient time to complete check-in and set up camp. Each troop will be met by
a staff member upon arrival who will help you get settled and start your program .
Early Arrivals
The camp is closed and the staff off-duty noon Saturday to noon Sunday. No dining
hall service is available during this time. Accordingly, early arrivals cannot be
accommodated.
Check-out
Normal check-out time is 10:00 am Saturday, following a campsite inspection by your
unit counselor and completion of check-out procedures.
Health and Sa/ ety
10
Kia Kime 92 Leaders Gulde
Sanitation
Latrine facilities are provided at each troop campsite . It is the responsibility of each
troop to maintain the cleanliness of these facilities during their stay at Kia Kima.
Toilet paper and cleaning supplies are available at Troop Issue. If maintenance
problems develop with the equipment in your campsite, please contact your program
director or the camp ranger.
There is a designated location for trash and garbage at each camp.
At Camp Cherokee, troops are issued garbage bags with the provisions for each meal.
The responsibilities of the clean-up crew include taking the garbage bag to the
designated central location after the meal. This will minimize any problems with
odors or insects in the campsite.
At Camp Osage, garbage bags are available through Troop Issue. Troops should
deliver their trash to the central location as needed. A trash delivery should be made
whenever the bag is full or the bag contains any significant amount of food waste
(watermelon rinds, etc.) .
There will not be a garbage pick-up run in the troop campsite. Each troop is
responsible for delivering its own garbage to the central location.
Shower facilities are provided in each troop campsite. In addition, both Camp
Cherokee and Camp Osage have central hot shower facilities. The central facilities
also include bathroom and shower facilities for leaders. There are separate female
leader facilities at Camp Osage. Troops are encouraged to make sure these facilities
are used properly and maintained in a clean manner. Your troop will be asked to
assist in cleaning the central showers.
Campsite Inspections
There will be a daily campsite inspection for health and safety purposes . This
inspection will be conducted by a camp commissioner. Your senior patrol leader will
be advised of the results of the inspection at the daily Senior Patrol Leaders Council
meeting. This inspection will be measured against health and safety standards and
will not be a competition against other units.
On Thursday, the program commissioner or program director will visit your
campsite to review it for campsite improvements. This review will be considered in
determining the Honor Troops and the Outstanding Troop of the Week.

important information.

• Conducting daily campsite inspections
• Visiting program areas daily
• Promoting camp activities
• Attend commissioner's meetings with the program director as scheduled
• Help with instruction as needed as arranged in advance with the program director
• Encourage camp morale and open lines of communication.
16
Kia Kime 92 Leaders Gulde
will provide more information at camp.
Troops are encouraged to hold their own campfires other evenings during the week. We
recommend that you invite other nearby troops and your favorite camp staff members
to your campfire.
Kia Kima Heritage Night
Heritage Night is a special program which examines the heritage of the Kia Kima area,
including Native Americans, settlers and the history of Kia Kima as a Scout camp.
Vespers
Vespers are held weekly at the Golightly All Faiths Chapel overlooking the camp. The
trip to the chapel is a highlight in many campers' weeks. We recommend that you come
early and bring your camera. The view is breathtaking . In addition to vespers, a
chaplain will be available throughout the week to handle any special needs.
Canoe Trips
One of the most popular program features at Kia Kima is the twilight canoe trip.
Typically, troops put in at the Osage waterfront around 5:00 and are picked up at the
nearby Slick Rock ford about three hours later. Picnic suppers are available from the
dining hall. Advance arrangements are a must and Scouts and Leaders who go must be
classified as swimmers. Other canoe trips (including overnighters) may be arranged.
Other Activities
Other evening activities, including intertroop sports competitions, will be scheduled
each week.
The Order of the Arrow at Kia Kima
Chickasah Lodge of the Order of the Arrow was founded at Kia Kima in 1948 and has
been an integral part of the program ever since. The lodge has completed many service
projects at Kia Kima. This year, they have also taken the lead in the camp promotion
effort. Without the Order of the Arrow, Kia Kima could not have made much of the
progress it has made. Many Arrowmen serve on the camp staff.
Several activities have been planned for Arrowmen at Kia Kima .
Ordeal members of the Order who have met the qualifications may seal their
membership in the Order by participating in the Brotherhood Ceremony. The
Brotherhood Ceremony will be conducted each Thursday evening all summer.

Troops who have not yet had their Order of the Arrow election may do so at camp. An
Order of the Arrow representative will be at the Leaders' Roundtable Sunday evening to
explain the process and make arrangements.
An Order of the Arrow call-out ceremony will be a part of the Friday night reservation

arranging for the call out at the Leaders Roundtable.

In counseling with individual Scouts about their camp schedule, please consider the
following:
• A quality camp experience includes time for advancement, troop and patrol
activities and personal time.
• While there are six instructional periods daily, Scouts should generally not be
scheduled into six merit badge classes. Scouts should experience swimming,
boating, rifle, archery, etc., regardless of whether they take these merit badges.
• Every Scout deserves the chance to learn to swim.
• Camp evaluations from Scouts overwhelmingly indicate they were not given
enough free time.
• We recommend that you take into consideration the location of the program areas
in scheduling the order of classes.
• Scouts in the New Scout Program for brand new Scouts will be in the program all
day. They will spend the morning in the Scoutcraft areas and the afternoons in
handicraft merit badges, swimming and visiting the rifle and archery ranges.
• Older Scouts who participate in Project COPE may be scheduled for morning or
afternoon sessions. They may work on merit badges during the time they are not
at Project COPE.
• Scouts 13 and above may be scheduled for climbing and rappelling training at
the tower. This session runs from 9:00 until 12:00 daily. Your troop may schedule
19
Kia Kima 92 Leaders Gulde
a time to use the tower as a group. Details will be available at the Sunday
Leaders Roundtable.
• Lifeguard BSA participants will spend almost all their time at the waterfront.
Aquatics
Kia Kima offers a varied aquatic program. There are many opportunities for every Scout to
learn to swim or to improve his swimming ability and classification. Aquatic merit badges
are among the most popular and useful of all Scout programs.

OZARK
Venture Base
atKiaKima
Ozark Venture Base is a new program being offered in 1992 that is open to Scouts age
13 and above who meet certain requirements. These programs use Kia Kima as a base
to challenge Venture-age Scouts with the opportunity to experience various outdoor
activities in the Ozarks area. The following Venture Base programs will be offered in
1992:
Ozark Trail Backpacking Trek
50 Miler Afloat
Climbers Camp
Project COPE
Preregistration Requirements
Each of these programs has minimum participation requirements. The cut-off date
for these programs is May 15, 1992. The minimum participation is six Scouts. One
leader will be required for each six Scouts, with a minimum of two leaders. Leaders
are not required for Project COPE. The maximum size for any program is 18 Scouts
(in two crews) and requests will be honored on a first come, first served basis. (Larger
groups will be broken into two crews.) You will be notified of acceptance into the
program. Each group participating in the Ozark Mountain Backpacking Trek, 50
Miler Afloat and Climbers Camp will also be accompanied when off the Kia Kima

Age and Other Requirements
The minimum age for participation in Ozark Venture Base programs is 13 years old
by Sunday check-in. Participants should come to camp with their troop; however,
provisional participants may be accepted if space is available and leadership
requirements have been met. All of the Venture Base programs are physically
strenuous because they feature extensive canoeing, hiking or climbing. These
programs are not appropriate for Scouts who are not physically fit. Kia Kima
recommends these programs only for those Scouts who have earned at least the First
Class Rank.
Leadership Requirements
At least one leader is required for every six Scouts in the program. A minimum of
two leaders is required for each group. The two leaders may be from different troops.
Kia Kima furnishes a staff guide for every group.
Relationship to Troop In Camp
Ideally, Venture Base participants will come to Kia Kima with their troop. However,
Venture Base groups may arrange to come to Kia Kima a different week from their
troop. They will join the troop for all activities on Sunday and camp with the troop
Sunday night. They will return to their troops for supper Friday night, participate
in the Friday night campfire and camp with their troop that night.

Recognition
Upon completion, participants will be eligible for the special Ozark Venture Base
emblem.

Project COPE
Project COPE stands for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience. Project COPE
has been offered at Kia Kima for a number of years and will be a part of the Ozark
Venture Base program beginning in 1992. Kia Kima has one of the finest COPE
courses in the United States.
COPE is an exciting, challenging program, which involves:
ACTION
EXCITEMENT
FUN
COMPETITION
CONFIDENCE-BUILDING
LEADERSHIP
TRUST
GOALS
The COPE course is conducted daily in two sessions, from 9:00 to 11:50 and 2:00 to
4:50 at the COPE area. Scouts should be prescheduled in either the morning or
afternoon sessions. Participation is limited to Scouts who are at least 13 years old.
Special Project COPE T-shirts are available at the Trading Post to Scouts who have
completed the course.
COPE activities include:
Hickory Jump

The goals of Project COPE are to build leadership, self-esteem, decision-making, trust
and teamwork. This is accomplished by progressing, as a group, through a series of
increasingly physically and mentally challenging exercises that require cooperation
and teamwork to complete.

Kia Kime 92 Leaders Guide
Part Three- PROMOTING SUMMER CAMP IN YOUR TROOP
Your troop's participation in summer camp will be a key indicator of the health of
your unit presently and in the year to come. Much groundwork needs to be laid to
ensure all of your Scouts have the opportunity for a week in summer camp.
The first steps for the troop committee include:
• Making the commitment to attend camp.
• Securing camp leadership.
• Selecting the date and reserving a campsite.
When these steps have been completed it is time to promote the week of camp within
your troop. Scouts and parents should be notified as early in the year as possible of
the troop's plans. Including it in a calendar published at the beginning of the school
year is one good idea.
The Order of the Arrow, Scouting's Brotherhood of Honor Campers, will provide
each unit with a packet of camp promotion material for your use. It includes:
• Camp Promotion Poster.
• Sign-up Chart.
• Ideas for Camp promotion.
• Summer Camp Saving Plan.
While summer camp is not expensive for a full week's program, the troop must plan
for how it will be financed. There are several possibilities. Some troops ask Scouts
and their parents to bear the cost directly. Others include the cost of summer camp in
their annual troop budget and conduct fundraising projects (under BSA guidelines)
to raise the needed funds. Camperships are available for qualified Scouts with a
financial need.
The Chickasah Lodge of the Order of the Arrow has as its goal to visit every single
troop in the Chickasaw Council to promote Kia Kima. With approximately 250
troops, this is a challenging goal indeed. This year, there is a district Order of the
Arrow Councilman, who is responsible for coordinating camp promotion and unit
election activities within each district. There is also an adviser, who is a member of
the district camping committee. These two Arrowmen will be able to answer your
questions and help resolve any problems you may have.
You will be contacted by the Order of the Arrow to schedule a camp promotion visit
and Order of the Arrow election.

Campership Information
Through the generosity of some concerned supporters of Scouting, limited funds
are available as "camperships" to help meet the camp fees of qualified Scouts with a
financial need. In applying for a campership, a Scout and his family are reminded
of the ninth point of the Scout law, A Scout is thrifty. A Scout works to pay his way
and to help others. Scouts are encouraged to plan ahead and work to pay their way
to camp .
Camperships are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, as long as funds are
available and are subject to the following conditions:
1. The unit leader secures and completes the campership application. The
application is forwarded to the Scout Service Center for the Council Camping
Committee to review .
2. No more than fifty per cent of the camp fee will be granted as a campership.
The maximum campership for 1992 is $45 .00 .
3. Camperships will not be granted for provisional camping. They are intended
to enable the Scout to attend camp with his own troop.
4. Camperships are granted to individual Scouts. If the Scout who receives the
campership is unable to attend, substitutions will not be allowed unless a new
campership application is filed in the name of the substitute Scout and
approved by the Council Camping Committee.
5. Campership applications must be completely filled out. Information on the
campership application will be held in confidence.
6. Candidates for camperships must be registered Scouts in good standing with
their troop.
7. All applications must be signed by a parent or guardian, troop leader and the
district camping chairman or representative .
It is not the intention to limit the number of Scouts eligible for camperships. On the
contrary, we want to stretch the available campership funds to cover as many needy
Scouts as possible.
Campership applications must be submitted by May 1, 1992 to be considered by the
Council Camping Committee.
Unit leaders will be notified by May 16, 1992 of the action taken by the Council
Camping Committee in approving or disapproving the campership application.

We recommend that the Scout build up to this event by
taking several backpacking tri ps of shorter duration during the months before
camp. The Backpacking Merit Badge pamphlet has some excellent conditioning
suggestions.
Participants in the 50 Miler Afloat should be experienced cancers, preferably with
the Canoeing merit badge. In order to participate, a Scout must pass the swimmer
classification test upon arrival at Kia Kima .
All participants are required to have a Personal Health and Medical Record Form -
Class 3, which requires an examination by a physician within the last 12 months.
