NOTE REGARDING Patch 406 R-2 by Ken Humphreys1
In 1953 I served as an ASM for one of the two Chickasa w ..
Council troops attendin g the 1953 National Jamboree in
Californ ia. As we were loading the chartere d buses In
Memphis someone from the Council office handed me a sack
ful 1 of this R-2 DA patch. I was told this order had Just
been received but were Incorrec t and would not be used by
the, lodge. I was asked to give them to our Council Scouts
to ~wap when they, got to the Jambore e. As soon as we reached
Californ ia I gave each Scout 2 patches which exhauste d the
supply. I think probably all of these patches were quickly
swapped when we reached the Jambore e. I did not keep a.
single patch myself and do not recall seeing any more after
w.e got ·back to Memph ls.

CHICKASAH LODGE NO. 406 - ORDER OF THE ARROW
Chickasaw Council, B.S.A. - Memphis, Tennessee
The Order of the Arrow Lodge In Chickasaw Council,
B.S.A. began as an outgrowth of an organization called the
"Counc I I Scouts" , a I oca I group of honor campers w I th In the

Idea of an Order of the Arrow lodge was Introduced, Under
the direction of Mr. Phil Emerick, Chlckasah Lodge was
founded. The first Ordeal was held on August 7, 1948 at

Among those Inducted In that first ceremony was Robert

CHICKASAH LODGE 406
By Jean M. Ulmer
The Order of the Arrow lodge in the Chickasaw Council began as an out-
. growth of an organization called the "Council Scouts," a local group.of honor
campers within the council with much the same ideals as the OA. In 1948, the
idea of an OA lodge was introduced and under the direction of Mr. Phil Emerick,
the Chickasah Lodge was founded. The first ordeal was held on August 7,
1948 at the original Kamp Kia. Kima near Hardy, Arkansas. The ceremonial team
from Ittawamba Lodge 235 came and inducted about thirty Council Scouts and
Scouters who became the lodge's charter members. Although the first ceremony
was held in 1948, the original charter was not issued until 1949.
Chickasah Lodge was originally a part of Area V-C in the 1950s amd early
1960s, along with Lodges 235, 413, 202, and 345. The "V" was the designation
of the old Region Five when the United States was divided into twelve regions.
The first two V-C conclaves were hosted by the Chickasah Lodge at Camp Currier
near Eudora, Mississippi, in 1955 and 1956; Chickasah was host again in 1960
at Kamp Kia Kima. In 1964, the areas were restructured and Chickasah joined
the lodges in Arkansas in forming Area V-A. That same year, Kamp Kia Kima was
moved ten miles west to the present location. The new Area V-A first met in
1965 and Chickasah hosted the conclave at their brand new camp. Charles Holland
of Chickasah was elected Area Chief to serve this new area and Tom McGuire
was chosen Area Advisor. Chickasah again provided an Area Chief in 1971
.when Johnny Fletcher was elected and he served during the last V-A Conclave in
1972 hosted at Kamp Kia Kima. At that time, it was announced that the areas
would be reorganized once again and Chickasah would belong to Section SE-IIA,
along with the other lodges in Tennessee. Region V became a part of the newly
formed Southeast Region when the regions were compacted into six from twelve.
At the first conclave in 1973, David Shettles of Chickasah was elected Section
Chief. In 1975, George Fant of Chickasah was elected Section Chief and he pre-
·"sided over the 1976 conclave hosted by Chickasah, but held at Camp Skymont
near Chattanooga due to the extreme driving distance to Kamp Kia Kima.
At the Area II (Tennessee-Kentucky) conclave in 1981, Bill Jennings of
Chickasah was elected Area Chief. At this time, the Southeast. Region announced
that it had again regrouped the sections and Chickasah became a member of
the new Section SE-II along with Lodge 235 and the Mississippi lodges. At the
first Section SE-II conclave in 1982, Jason Hood of Chickasah was elected
Section Chief. Later that year at the national planning conference, Jason was
elected Southeast Region Chief, serving in that position until 1984. Larry
Raines from Chickasah was elected Section Chief in 1988 and wil.l serve through
the conclave to be hosted by Chickasah Lodge at Kia Kima Scout Reservation on
April 28-30. .
Along with providing section and area leadership over the years, Chickasah
Lodge is home to several recipients of national OA honors. At the 1971
National Conference, Tom McGuire received the Distinguished Service Award
for his untiring service as Area V-A Advisor •.. Ann Jennings, the mother of
Bill Jennings, was presented the Red Arrow Award at the 1983 National Conference
for her help and instruction at several National Indian Seminars and
National Conferences. Jason Hood was a recipient of the Distinguished Service
Award in 1986. In 1988, Dr. c. D. ·cash received the Distinguished Service
Award and his wife, Margaret, was presented the Red Arrow Award.
The home camp of the Chickasah Lodge has always been the Kia Kima Scout

NOTE REGARDING Patch 406 R-2 by Ken Humphreys1
In 1953 I served as an ASM for one of the two Chickasaw ..
Council troops attending the 1953 National Jamboree in
California. As we were loading the chartered buses In
Memphis someone from the Council office handed me a sack
ful 1 of this R-2 DA patch. I was told this order had Just
been received but were Incorrect and would not be used by
the, lodge. I was asked to give them to our Council Scouts
to ~wap when they, got to the Jamboree. As soon as we reached
California I gave each Scout 2 patches which exhausted the
supply. I think probably all of these patches were quickly
swapped when we reached the Jamboree. I did not keep a.
single patch myself and do not recall seeing any more after
