Gouncil Unueils Most Ambitious Summer Camp Program Yetl
Base Your Older Scouts at Ozarks Uenture Base at Kia Kima
With programs three years in the making, Kia Kima will debut
one of the most diverse, intense high adventure bases to be found
anywhere in the Nation-right here in the Chickasaw Council. The
Council's spectacular 860-acre facility will be the base for a waterskiing and motor-boating adventure, a backwoods outpost featuring Ozarks lore, an
advanced climbing program, and improved
canoe frek program, and a redesigned Project
COPE program which already uses one of
the Nation's finest course facilities.
Al1 of these programs will fall under the
second phase of Kia Kima's third fulI-scale
camping program, the Ozarks Venture Base.
Programs will be offered on a rotating basis
throughout the six weeks of the camping
season, with the more popular programs featured during several weeks. The staff will
be drawn from Kia Kima's experienced
corps of Scouters and from highly trained
technical experts in the various fields.
The Thunderbird Aquatics Outpost will
feature Kia Kima's first foray into competition-grade and introductory instruction and
fun in water-skiing and motor-boating. Using the spectacular lakes
of the Cherokee Village area, older Scouts will learn the basics of
skiing, earn advancement, and most of all, splash and ski for an
entire halfday ofprogram all week long.

The Mesara Mountain Outpost will be tucked away in a secluded but spectacularly beautiful part of Kia Kima known to few
Scouts or Scouters. Formerly the site of an old trapper's cabin, this
breathtaking overlook will feature a rugged pioneer's cabin complete with black-smithing, traditional Ozark
crafts, and an evening of storytelling for
units ready for backwoods adventure.
Also look for more details soon on the
equally exciting Ozark Climbing School,
I

'featuring forays off-property to the area's
most intense rock faces; the 50-MilerAfloat,
traditiomlly Kia Kima's most populm highadventure activity, improved and based on
differentrivers ofstunning scenery and swift

currents; and an improved, two-layered
Project COPE program for leadership and
'team building on one ofthe country's finest
challenge courses.

Within the next.several weeks, older
Scouts in atl Chickasaw Council troops will
receive a dramatic irivitation to the Ozark

Venture Base. It's a program that will hold
their interest well beyond a year or two of
traditional summer camp, allowing them to enjoy challenges and
also develop and provide leadership to your troop. So, come find
out at Kia Kima why This Camp Rocks!

Scouts of AII Ages to See lllew First Year Gamper
and Special Programs At Alt Gamps!
Along with the exciting developments for older Scouts, the
Chickasaw Council will unveil an innovative, exciting new Pioneer Program for first-year campers at Camp Osage, Camp Cherokee, and Camp Tallaha. The Council Camping Committee, like
most Scoutmasters, realizes that the first week of summer camp
for a new Scout will not only determine whether he returns to
camp; it may also decide whether he stays in Scouting itself.
The cornmittee is devoting tremendous resources and energy
to revamping the Pioneer Program. The new program, which
will be one of America's most innovative, will feature a network
of adventure-challenge trails with situational games and teaching sessions balanced. Lectures and sitting blank-eyed at picnic

tables will be reduced to nil for these high-energy new Scouts,
with the emphasis in the program being challenge, adventure,
and solid, inspiring recognition with an eye towards staying in
Scouting and its outdoor program.
Jf you have ideas about the first-year camper program, write
the Council's camp administrator, Scott Stephens, at the Council
Office, call him there, or e-mail the Chickasaw Council Camps
at Kiakimabsa@aol.com. Look for a PioneerAdventure invitation brochure to target your new Scouts in the coming months.
It's just another reason why the Chickasaw Council Camps are
the place to camp in 1996.

Friends of Scouting
The Friends cf Scouting campaign is the annual linance campaign of the Chickasaw Council. Every yearthe professional staff, along with
community leaders, as well as volunteer Scout
leaders, go out into the community to help raise
money fbr our arutual operating budget. This year
our budget is roughly 2.5 million dollars. Each
individual district has a portion of that budget to
raise. The North Central District's portion is
$54,000. It is the responsibility of the Norrh
Central District to acquire our goal, which is a!
tainable. With the United Way decreasing its support, in order for the district and the council to
provide quality programming, we are going to
need help from the unit level. During this year's
campaign, we are going to be calling on the units
to assist us in our effofis. We will also be asking
units to let us into your February pack meetings
andlor Blue and Gold banquets, to ask for in-

The key to these ambitious groundbreaking efforts in Scout camping is a qualified and
enthusiastic summer camp staff. Applications and information on the Chickasaw Council
summer camp staff have been mailed to all Scoutmasters, and several positions remain at

An 86-Year-0ld Tradition
As well known as Santa Claus and as
American as the star-spangled banner is the
Boy Scouts ofAmerica, which will
be 86 years old on Thursday,
February 8, 1996. It seems as
though Scouting has always
been around. Most of us are
aware of it's outdoor activi-

which servcs this area and they are enjoying the many experiences BSA programs
offer.

It is

-

ties and fun-filled

poses

values-driven or ganization. Scouting is a Cub Scout

.48

for
learning about wildlife conservation;
a Boy Scout discovering the technical world
of computers; or an Explorer preparing an
experiment that will be aboard a future space
shuttle flight. Scouting has reached people
with disabilities; it continues to serve youth
in the inner-city; it has materials aimed at
the latchkey child, male or female, in Scouting or out, who must learn to cope much of
the time on his or her own; it also appeals to
teenage girls and young women who comprise more than 40 percent of Exploring's
membership. Some 25,000 young people
are registered with the Chickasaw Council,
7

of

reaching

young people and guiding

events. However, there

is another side to this

good to know that,

though times and techniques
change, some things don't
such as the principles
of the BSA. Its pur-

the

2\

them toward good citizenship, sound characteq sand
strong bodies haven't changed

since 1910.
The Boy Scouts of America doesn't operate in a vacuum. There are unsung community heroes-the chartered organizations and
vslunfesl5-\rr'ho play vital roles in getting
programs to youth of our area. The Chickasaw Council has 760 Cub Scout Packs, Boy
Scout troops, and Explorer posts.
As the Boy Scouts of America takes time
to reflect on its past this month, let us all
take time to salute the more than 1.5 million
volunteer adult leaders ho have committed
themselves to teach young Americans a basic set of values to use over their lifetime.

Lodge Conference!

If you did

not go, you missed out on a wonderful Scout-

ing experience. Once again this month

I

would like to remind you to pay your dues ! ! !
You need to encourage a1l others to pay their

well. At this point in time, I would
like for you to strongly insist all Arrowmen
who have not paid their dues to pay them
immediately. This point cannot be sffessed
enough during this year. We need your
help!!
The next event for the lodge is the SR-9
Section Conclave. This will be held atbeautiful Camp CedarValley, just an hour's drive
farther than Kia Kima, during the dates of
April 19-21, 1996. Also, on the schedule is
a Conclave Contingent meeting on April 6.
I would like to encourage all to come, our
goal is to have at least 150 people attending
this event. We also hope to win the Ron
dues as

Yeager Best All-Around Lodge Award. To
do this, we need everyone to pay their dues
and attend this event. For winning the Ron
Yeager will give us a jump on winning one
of the highest awards in the nation, the E
Urner Goodman Camping Award.
By the beginning of March you should receive the next issue of The Dancing Bear.
Remember, you must have your dues paid

in order to receive this issue. The article
deadline for the Summer Issue is May 5,
1996. lf you know any youth Arrowmen
who would like to submit an article for this
issue please give them my address and have
them send it to me. They can write an article about anything they like, e.g., someone can send in an article about the Section

Conclave, a nomination for Arrowman in
Action, a Dear Coop letter, or anything else.
I am not asking this for the sole reason of
making my job easier, but one of my goals
is to involve more people in the writing of
articles for The Dancing Bear. In the past,
the Lodge Secretary has written almost all
the articles, with the exception of Chapter
and Committee Reports. The articles can
be sent to:

0vercoming 0biections to Scout Family
Friends of Scouting
1. Q. Boy Scouts are supported by the United Way-why do they want my money?
A.

You are correct that the council benefits from local United Way campaigns. However, United Way allocations represent
only l6Vo of the council budget. Your support through the Friends of Scouting campaign will help the council provide
the services not funded by the United Way.

2. Q. Scouting is too expensive

already-look

at how much a uniform costs, and then we have to buy the handbooks and

pay to go to the training courses.

A. Uniforms are not inexpensive,

but they are high quality-American made. The training course fees basically cover the
cost of the give-away materials. It doesn't include the cost of the audiovisual aids and equipment, office support that
produced the materials, and other items used to conduct and prepare these important training programs.

3. Q. The council doesn't do anything f61 u5-\il,s have to pay for the advancement

awards and Cub Scout Day Camp.

A. Each boy helps pay for his advancement awards through his dues and the unit budget plan. The Cub Scout Day Camp
fee basically covers the program materials, site fee, patch and T:shirt, etc., the Cub Scout receives. The council provides
the overall program development, support, and staff to carry out the program. The council does provide a number of

services to benefit the unit, including: a trained professional staff, program guidance and support, roundtables, training
courses, council newsletter, Scout Shops, insurance, office support and other services.

4. Q. I give time as a leader and the parents

stuff-let other people pick up

get '6nicked" for uniforms and a lot of other

the slack.

A.

We appreciate your services as a leader; that is the strength of Scouting-a quality program made possible by many
dedicated volunteers. It's natural that, just like church, those that are closest and most active, best understand the benefits

of the program and support it financially also.

5. Q. It costs over $100 a week to send my son to summer

camp, and the sleeping bag and pack and all the other equip-

ment he needs isn't cheap. Give me a break!

A. The fee a Scout pays for summer camp only covers part of the cost-essentially

the cost of his meals, expendable
program materials, and the summer camp staff. The other costs like building insurance, ongoing maintenance, development, office support and camp preparation are included in the council's budget.

vol..33 NO.02 FEBRUARY 1996
With programs three years in the making, Kia Kima will debut
one of the most diverse, intense high adventure bases to be found
anywhere in the Nation-right here in the Chickasaw Council. The
Council's spectacular 860-acre facility will be the base for a waterskiing
and motor-boating adventure, a backwoods
outpost featuring Ozarks lore, an
advanced climbing program, and improved
canoe frek program, and a redesigned Project
COPE program which already uses one of
the Nation's finest course facilities.
Al1 of these programs will fall under the
second phase of Kia Kima's third fulI-scale
camping program, the Ozarks Venture Base.
Programs will be offered on a rotating basis
throughout the six weeks of the camping
season, with the more popular programs featured
during several weeks. The staff will
be drawn from Kia Kima's experienced
corps of Scouters and from highly trained
technical experts in the various fields.
The Thunderbird Aquatics Outpost will
feature Kia Kima's first foray into competition-
grade and introductory instruction and
fun in water-skiing and motor-boating. Using the spectacular lakes
of the Cherokee Village area, older Scouts will learn the basics of
skiing, earn advancement, and most of all, splash and ski for an
entire halfday ofprogram all week long.

The Mesara Mountain Outpost will be tucked away in a secluded
but spectacularly beautiful part of Kia Kima known to few
Scouts or Scouters. Formerly the site of an old trapper's cabin, this
breathtaking overlook will feature a rugged pioneer's cabin complete
with black-smithing, traditional Ozark
crafts, and an evening of storytelling for
units ready for backwoods adventure.
Also look for more details soon on the
equally exciting Ozark Climbing School,

most intense rock faces; the 50-MilerAfloat,
traditiomlly Kia Kima's most populm highadventure

differentrivers ofstunning scenery and swift

Project COPE program for leadership and
'team building on one ofthe country's finest
challenge courses.
Within the next.several weeks, older
Scouts in atl Chickasaw Council troops will
receive a dramatic irivitation to the Ozark
Venture Base. It's a program that will hold
their interest well beyond a year or two of
traditional summer camp, allowing them to enjoy challenges and
also develop and provide leadership to your troop. So, come find
out at Kia Kima why This Camp Rocks!
Scouts of AII Ages to See lllew First Year Gamper
and Special Programs At Alt Gamps!
Along with the exciting developments for older Scouts, the
Chickasaw Council will unveil an innovative, exciting new Pioneer
Program for first-year campers at Camp Osage, Camp Cherokee,
and Camp Tallaha.
The new program, which
will be one of America's most innovative, will feature a network
of adventure-challenge trails with situational games and teaching
sessions balanced.
Look for a PioneerAdventure invitation
brochure to target your new Scouts in the coming months.
It's just another reason why the Chickasaw Council Camps are
the place to camp in 1996.

Everyone that participated in Camporee '95 can
say without a doubt, that they had an enjoyable

Friends of Scouting
The Friends cf Scouting campaign is the annual
linance campaign of the Chickasaw Council.
Every yearthe professional staff, along with
community leaders, as well as volunteer Scout
leaders, go out into the community to help raise
money fbr our arutual operating budget. This year
our budget is roughly 2.5 million dollars. Each
individual district has a portion of that budget to
raise. The North Central District's portion is
$54,000. It is the responsibility of the Norrh
Central District to acquire our goal, which is a!
tainable. With the United Way decreasing its support,
in order for the district and the council to
provide quality programming, we are going to
need help from the unit level. During this year's
campaign, we are going to be calling on the units
to assist us in our effofis. We will also be asking
units to let us into your February pack meetings
andlor Blue and Gold banquets, to ask for involvement
fiom the parents of your Scouts.
We've got a great task ahead of us, but with a
superlative group like the NORTH CENTR,{L
DISTRICT, I know we can make it happen.

of money to pay for outings badges
and registration. The Chickasaw
Council provides two opportunities
during the year to help units raise the
money they need.
Beginning March 9th and concluding
March 29th, your unit will have
the chance to sell Nestle candy bars
for $ 1.00 each. You will keep 30 cents
or 30Vo of everything you sell. The
candy comes 60 bars to a case which
is then split into two sub cases containing
30 bars each.
More details will be provided
at your February roundtable.

Gamp Slaff Key to Success
of IUew Plans
The key to these ambitious groundbreaking efforts in Scout camping is a qualified and
enthusiastic summer camp staff. Applications and information on the Chickasaw Council
summer camp staff have been mailed to all Scoutmasters, and several positions remain at
Kia Kjma's three camps in Arkansas and at Camp Thllaha in Mississippi. As any current or
former camp staff member will relate, the experience is one where the challenges and the
rewards are both incredible. Stop by the Council Service Center for an application or call
Scott ar 327-4193 0r 800-727-3272.
, sllP
Do you have Scouts in your troop who want a taste of camp staff adventure but aren't
quite ready for an entire summer? Tell them to check out the Staff Development Program,
a two-week introduction to camp staff, life featuring a variety of teaching and leadership
experiences. It's a great way to check out the staffexperience for those aged fourteen or
fifteen, especially those who have a few merit badges under their belt and are looking for
a new challenge. Call Scott at 327-4193 or 800-127-3272.
Kia Kima On-line!
For Scouts and Scouters who have made the leap to cyberspace, you can now e-mail the
Chickasaw Council's camping programs with questions or requests for information. The
address is kiakimabsa@aol.com. Watch soon for the debut of the Kia Kima web page, an
exciting project launched to keep Scouters around the world informed about the Ozarks'
finest Scout camp, based right here in the Chickasaw Council.
An 86-Year-0ld Tradition
As well known as Santa Claus and as
American as the star-spangled banner is the
Boy Scouts ofAmerica, which will
be 86 years old on Thursday,
February 8, 1996. It seems as
though Scouting has always
been around. Most of us are
aware of it's outdoor activities
and fun-filled
events. However, there
is another side to this
values-driven or ganization.
Scouting is a Cub Scout
learning about wildlife conservation;
a Boy Scout discovering the technical world
of computers; or an Explorer preparing an
experiment that will be aboard a future space
shuttle flight. Scouting has reached people
with disabilities; it continues to serve youth
in the inner-city; it has materials aimed at
the latchkey child, male or female, in Scouting
or out, who must learn to cope much of
the time on his or her own; it also appeals to
teenage girls and young women who comprise
more than 40 percent of Exploring's
membership. Some 25,000 young people
are registered with the Chickasaw Council,
which servcs this area and they are enjoying
the many experiences BSA programs
offer.
It is good to know that,
though times and techniques
change, some things don't
- such as the principles
of the BSA. Its purposes
of reaching
young people and guiding
them toward good citizenship,
sound characteq sand
for the 2\ strong bodies haven't changed
since 1910.
The Boy Scouts of America doesn't operate
in a vacuum. There are unsung community
heroes-the chartered organizations and
vslunfesl5-\rr'ho play vital roles in getting
programs to youth of our area. The Chickasaw
Council has 760 Cub Scout Packs, Boy
Scout troops, and Explorer posts.
As the Boy Scouts of America takes time
to reflect on its past this month, let us all
take time to salute the more than 1.5 million
volunteer adult leaders ho have committed
themselves to teach young Americans a basic
set of values to use over their lifetime.

I hope you enjoyed the First
Annual Ahoalan-Nachpikin
Lodge Conference! If you did
not go, you missed out on a wonderful Scouting
experience. Once again this month I
would like to remind you to pay your dues ! ! !
You need to encourage a1l others to pay their
dues as well. At this point in time, I would
like for you to strongly insist all Arrowmen
who have not paid their dues to pay them
immediately. This point cannot be sffessed
enough during this year. We need your
help!!
The next event for the lodge is the SR-9
Section Conclave. This will be held atbeautiful
Camp CedarValley, just an hour's drive
farther than Kia Kima, during the dates of
April 19-21, 1996. Also, on the schedule is
a Conclave Contingent meeting on April 6.
I would like to encourage all to come, our
goal is to have at least 150 people attending
this event. We also hope to win the Ron
Yeager Best All-Around Lodge Award. To
do this, we need everyone to pay their dues
and attend this event. For winning the Ron
Yeager will give us a jump on winning one
of the highest awards in the nation, the E
Urner Goodman Camping Award.
By the beginning of March you should receive
the next issue of The Dancing Bear.
Remember, you must have your dues paid
in order to receive this issue. The article
deadline for the Summer Issue is May 5,
1996. lf you know any youth Arrowmen
who would like to submit an article for this
issue please give them my address and have
them send it to me. They can write an article
about anything they like, e.g., someone
can send in an article about the Section
Conclave, a nomination for Arrowman in
Action, a Dear Coop letter, or anything else.
I am not asking this for the sole reason of
making my job easier, but one of my goals
is to involve more people in the writing of
articles for The Dancing Bear. In the past,
the Lodge Secretary has written almost all
the articles, with the exception of Chapter
and Committee Reports. The articles can
be sent to:

0vercoming 0biections to Scout Family
Friends of Scouting
1. Q. Boy Scouts are supported by the United Way-why do they want my money?
A. You are correct that the council benefits from local United Way campaigns. However, United Way allocations represent
only l6Vo of the council budget. Your support through the Friends of Scouting campaign will help the council provide
the services not funded by the United Way.
2. Q. Scouting is too expensive already-look at how much a uniform costs, and then we have to buy the handbooks and
pay to go to the training courses.
A. Uniforms are not inexpensive, but they are high quality-American made. The training course fees basically cover the
cost of the give-away materials. It doesn't include the cost of the audiovisual aids and equipment, office support that
produced the materials, and other items used to conduct and prepare these important training programs.
3. Q. The council doesn't do anything f61 u5-\il,s have to pay for the advancement awards and Cub Scout Day Camp.
4. Q. I give time as a leader and the parents get '6nicked" for uniforms and a lot of other stuff-let other people pick up
the slack.
A. We appreciate your services as a leader; that is the strength of Scouting-a quality program made possible by many
dedicated volunteers. It's natural that, just like church, those that are closest and most active, best understand the benefits
of the program and support it financially also.
5. Q. It costs over $100 a week to send my son to summer camp, and the sleeping bag and pack and all the other equipment
he needs isn't cheap. Give me a break!
A. The fee a Scout pays for summer camp only covers part of the cost-essentially the cost of his meals, expendable
program materials, and the summer camp staff. The other costs like building insurance, ongoing maintenance, development,
office support and camp preparation are included in the council's budget.
