ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR
Jim New was recently awarded the Medal of Merit
from the Natjonal Court of Honor, of the Boy
Scouts of Amerjca. Jim New, an Assistant Scoutmaster
with Troop 30, in the Southwest District,
was given this award because he saved the life of
one of his fellow employees at MAPCO Petroleum.
On February 16, of this 22 year old Roy Young began
to gag and grasp for breath in the off ice of
MAPCO Petroleum. A secretary, who was aware of Jim's First Ai d
and CPR skills, called him in for help . When Jim arrived Roy was
still choking. Jim then proceeded to use the Heimlich maneuver to
dislodge any obstruction to the young man's throat. After several
attempts, Roy stopped breathing, at that point Jim gave the finger
sweep and started mouth-tomouth recessitation. Soon the young man
started breathing normally on his own and rega ined his color . A
few minutes later Howard Bicknell, the Safety Director arrived,
but by that time Jim had everything under control. They treated
hjm for shock and waited for the Paraiaedics to arrive .
If i t had not ~een for Jim New's knowledge of First Aid and CPR,
Roy Young might not be alive today. In a letter to the Chickasaw
Council Mr. Roy Young expressed his gratitude by saying , "if it
had not been for the unselfish act of Mr . New, a life might h a ve
been lost . . . " He later added, " . .. I feel with deep humility and
honor, that Mr. New deserves all the honor that is bestowed upon
him, for the scriptures tell us that "Greater Love Have No Man
Than This, That a Man Lay Down His Life For a Friend . "
The Chickasaw Council, Southwest District, and Troop 30, takes
great pride in joining the National Court of Honor, Boy Scouts of
Amerjca, in recognizing Jim in this lifesaving "good deed" of
kindness . It is through the training of Scouting, t hat such
heroic deeds can be committed. Congratulation Jim.
