In the May issue of Smoke
Signals it was mistakenly
announced that the fee paid by
Cubs and Webelos to attend
Cub Scout Day included lunch
each day.
This is not correct - the
$15.00 Cub fee and $20.00
Webelos fee does include
crafts, snacks, drinks, insurance, patch, and iron-on
decal; but does not include
lunches.

Meet Your Council Sta{f

Frances Gwartney began
working for the Chickasaw
Council in 1957. She is well
known to most volunteers;
especially those connected or
involved with the Order of the
Arrow, Advancement, or Publicity.
In her position with the
council Frances is in charge of all
rank advancement, especially
the processing of Eagle Applica-

tions · and the Annual Eagle
Banquet. She handles the lay-out
of the Smoke Signals and types
all articles for that publication.
Probably her best known job is
that of office secretary to the
Or.der of the Arrow. In this
position she maintains all 0 -A
Records of tapouts, induction,
and history of membership. She
has been honored by the 0-A by
receiving the coveted "Alloga-

gan Award" given only to those
persons outside the order that
have contributed greatly to the
growth and success of the 0-A.

Sustaining Memberships
Sustaining members of the Chickasaw Council are very important
people. Their contributions make up the difference between what we
receive from the United Way and the cost of Scouting.
Sustaining Members make it possible to maintain our Scout
_ camps - provide service to community institutions and thei"r units keep the Scout office open for badges and supplies - provide visual aids
and training for leaders and myriads of other services to boys and
li>aders. Sustaining Members really do SUSTAIN the Scouting
program. Did we miss· you? We may have missed inviting you to
lwcome a Sustaining Member. If we did, please join as a Sustaining
Member by filling out the coupon below.

JOINT CUB/SCOUT ROUNDTABLE
A joint Cub/ Scout Roundtable was held at 7:30 p.m. on May 10,
1979 at McLemore Christian Church. Leaders from Scout and Cub
units were present to discuss problems and needs of the Eastern
District. A lot of light was shed on problems with all phases of
Scouting especially the Webelo transition into the Boy Scouts. I believe
tha.t this meeting was the beginning of a new spirit of togetherness in
the Eastern District and that a substantial growth in units and
program will be realized in the near future. If you were unable to attend
you missed one of the most meaningful meetings we have had in a long
time. We plan to make this a regular event so stay tuned for the next
meeting.
SME
As of this date the Eastern District has reached 1/2 of our 40,500.00
goal. The next phase of our SME game plan is the unit enrollment
campaign headed by Phil Gilmer, Thane Smith, Howard Buehler and
Ozzie Cain. Also the follow-up campaign headed by Jim Laycook will
be starting soon. I hope we can all pitch in and help these outstanding
volunteers so that we can reach our goal.
WEBELOSENCAMPMENT
The Eastern, Northeast, North Central Webelos Encampment
was a tremendous success . .Although there was an abundance ofrain
there was also an abundance of fun. The games on Saturday. Thanks
to all the boys and dads who made the trip and special thanks to
Delane Cox for coordinating all -0£.the activities.

LOOKING AHEAD
Because this Smoke Signals is for ,June and ,July you will n ot
receive another issue till the first week in August. Two items that
deserve your attention are (1) the August Conclave and (2) the Fall
Roundup program. The Conclave is important because it is here that
we get started again for the 1979-80 Scouting Year. Reserve AUGUST
28, 7:30 p.m. Second Presbyterian Church now. And regarding Fall
Roundup: The School Nights, t he Neighborhood Caravans, the Porch
Light Campaign, the Scout-A-Pal, and other roundup methods ·a re
important because recruiting new boys and new leaders is crucial to
the on-going health of your unit's opera tion. Be preparing n ow for the
type and style of your outreach programs in the Fall. Which school(s )
are you going to zero in for new boys and parents? Also, ,Jim Irons a n d
his Membership/ Relationships Committee will be meeting ,July 18 to
begin plans for the Fall School Night for Scouting. We encourage you
to attend this meeting (7:30 p.m., Scout Service Center) in order that
you, the Leader, will help guide and direct the manner in which School
Nights are conducted. Thank you.

CORRECTION
In the May issue of Smoke
Signals it was mistakenly
announced that the fee paid by
Cubs and Webelos to attend
Cub Scout Day included lunch

This is not correct - the
$15.00 Cub fee and $20.00
Webelos fee does include
crafts, snacks, drinks, insurance,
patch, and iron-on

lunches.

Sustaining members of the Chickasaw Council are very important
people. Their contributions make up the difference between what we
receive from the United Way and the cost of Scouting.
Sustaining Members make it possible to maintain our Scout
_camps - provide service to community institutions and thei"r units -
keep the Scout office open for badges and supplies -provide visual aids

The Eastern, Northeast, North Central Webelos Encampment
was a tremendous success . . Although there was an abundance ofrain
there was also an abundance of fun. The games on Saturday. Thanks
to all the boys and dads who made the trip and special thanks to
Delane Cox for coordinating all -0£.the activities.

LOOKING AHEAD
Because this Smoke Signals is for ,June and ,July you will not
receive another issue till the first week in August.
Roundup: The School Nights, the Neighborhood Caravans, the Porch
Light Campaign, the Scout-A-Pal, and other roundup methods ·are
important because recruiting new boys and new leaders is crucial to
the on-going health of your unit's operation. Be preparing now for the
type and style of your outreach programs in the Fall. Which school(s)
are you going to zero in for new boys and parents? Also, ,Jim Irons and
his Membership/ Relationships Committee will be meeting ,July 18 to
begin plans for the Fall School Night for Scouting. We encourage you
to attend this meeting (7:30 p.m., Scout Service Center) in order that
