CHICKASAW COUNCIL, B.S.A. MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

SEPTEMBER, 1973

MEMPHIS STATE TIGER ROUNDBALL ROUND UP ANNOUNCED
The Chickasaw Council's 1973 exciting Round Up theme is MEMPHIS
STATE TIGER ROUNDBALL ROUND
UP. The Memphis State Basketball Team
will serve as the focal point of this years
Round Up program and is probably the
most unique in years. The intent and
purpose is to provide our Cubs, Scouts
and Explorers the opportunity and incentive to recruit their friend or friends
into the Scouting program. Most boys
join our program because they were
invited! Almost every Cub or Scout age
boy is interested in basketball and with
the Great NCAA Runner-up in 1972 right
here, it is logical that Scouting and the
Tigers team-up in our Roundball Round
Up. Every boy in the Mid-South deserves
the chance to be a Scout, and this
exciting program will help provide that
opportunity.
Coach Gene Bartow of the Basketball
Tigers has agreed to serve as Chairman of
this years Roundball Round Up. Coach
Bartow is respected both as a winner and
superb Basketball Coach and as a developer of young men. He was named
"Coach Of The· Year" last year. He
assumes this responsibility with eagerness
and total cooperation as he is ardent in
his support of the Scouting program and
its' ideals. Needless to say, the entire
Chickasaw Council takes pride in welcoming Coach Gene Bartow to our
"Team" of Scouting.
How does the program work? Beginning Octo~er 1st, 1973, any Cub, Scout

or Explorer who recruits a non-member
into t_h e program qualifies. All Packs,
Troops, and Posts will be given the
opportunity . to participate during the
month of September by setting a unit
goal of the number of new boys they will
strive to recruit. The unit goal should be
filled out on the special card and mailed
to the Chickasaw Council office. In order
for boys to win their prizes, use the
Round Up form to insure no misunderstanding. Your unit must submit a
worthy goal in order for your Cubs,
Scouts or Explorers to participate.
What about prizes or incentives? We've
got 'em!
1. Each Cub, Scout or Explorer who
recruits a non-member will receive a
colorful collectors Tiger Roundball
Round Up Patch. Patches will be
awarded upon receipt of the Round

Up form mentioned earlier at the
Council office.
2. A special Free Basketball Practice
Session by the Memphis State
coaches and all the players will be
given in December or January. All
recruiters and new boys recruited
will be invited to participate.
3. Each Unit Leader, Cubmaster, Scoutmaster or Explorer Advisor, whose
unit meets it's goal objective by
December 15, 1973, will be
presented with a handsome Coffee
Mug inscribed with the Round Up
emblem. This certainly will be a
collectors item.
4. The handsome Coffee Mug inscribed
with the Round Up design will be
presented to each experienced Den
Mother or Den Leader coach who
helps organize a new Den or helps
re-organize a Den that no longer
exists. Helping to recruit a new Den
Mother and helping her get started is
the aim of this recognition.
5. Two autographed, Memphis State
Basketballs will be awarded by each
district in the Council. Rules as to
how your unit may win one of these
will be determined by each district
and announced.
Wow! What an exciting Round Up
program. Be sure that the Cubs, Scouts or
Explorers in your unit get the word about
the Memphis State Tiger Roundball
Round Up. Don't wait ... Announce at
your next meeting!

SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 7:30 P. M. All
potential Cubs and Scouts are urged to·attend their nearest school.

KAMP KIA KIMA
RECEIVES NATIONA-L
RECOGNITION
Kamp Kia Kima received the National
Standard Camp Rating for 1973. This is
the highest rating a camp can receive
from the regional office.
We wish to thank Shan Pitner, Camp
Director, and his staff for doing an
outstanding job. All indications from

Scouts and Scouters seem to indicate that
the "1973 Summer Camp Season" was
the best in the history of the Chickasaw
Council.
The National Standards require a camp
to include such items as tested drinking
water, an adequate milk supply, refrigeration, physical examinations, medical inspections, health log, latrines, waste disposal, state and local permits on licenses,
pre-camp health and safety and sanitation
inspections.

FIRE DEPARTMENT-8.S.A.
FIRE PREVENTION
PROGRAM
The Chickasaw Council in co-operation with the Memphis Fire Department
will participate in the "Cub and Scout
Fire Prevention Program." District Chiefs
Richard Johnson and M.D. Lee along
with volunteer Scouter George Dupont of
the Southwest District are the people
most responsible for developing this outstanding program.
The details of the fire prevention
program will be explained at our fall
conclave programs and at the September
Cub and Scout Roundtables.
Listed here is a brief summary of the
ways the Cubs will take part in the
program: Each Cub will receive a brochure explaining Fire Safety. He will then
take a short test on the material he has
read. Each Cub will be required to write a
fifty word essay on fire prevention and
make ·a home inspection. The Cub will
then be eligible to buy a B.S.A. Memphis Fire Department Patch for 25¢
at one of the eleven designated fire
stations across the city. McDonalds will
give each Cub a hamburger for participating in this program.
The Boy Scouts will receive a brochure, and they will then take a short test
on the material covered. Each Scout will
be required to make a drawing of an
evacuation plan of his home. The Scouts
will also make a home inspection. Scouts
can also buy the B.S.A. - Memphis Fire
Department Patch for 25¢.
One additional item for the Boy
Scouts in this program is that they may
earn their Firemanship Merit Badge.
Scoutmasters will receive questions for
this merit badge in their packet. Each
Scout is to take the test in front of his
Scoutmaster and then turn the quiz in at
one of the designated fire stations.
Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13.
A council wide Fire Prevention Recognition Program will take part in late October to climax this outstanding program.

SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING
Under the leadership of Richard
Allen, District School Night for Scouting
Chairman, we are hoping to enroll in
excess of l 15new Cubs and Scouts on the
night of September 18. Many boys will
show up to join because of the publicity
involved and because of their own interest in Scouting. However, there will be
many other boys who would love to join,
but who do not because they are afraid
that they will not know anybody.
Friends are a very, very important
part of a Cub-aged and Scout-aged boys'
lives, and we can achieve a much higher
degree of success on School Night '73 if
we put forth the effort to utilize the
bonds 6f friendship that exist between
our Scouts and their non-Scout friends.
We can do this by, 1. informing our Cubs
and Scouts of School Night For Scouting;
2. Letting them know which school their
Packs and Troops will be attending on
School Night; and 3. Encouraging them
to invite at least one of their non-Scout
friends to join their Pack or Troop on
School Night at their assigned school.
By following these three simple
steps, we can put the golden opportunities of Scouting into the lives of many
more boys. Somewhere in Crittenden
County, there is a boy that desperately
needs Scouting. Let's be sure to get him!
SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTERS
Yes, there really is such a thing.
Many parents will attend School Night
For Scouting. Make sure on that night
that they get involved with their son in
your Pack or Troop.

more productive.
So make sure that every boy has the
chance to experience the program and is
not deprived because a parent just did not
know the story. Also better informed
parents make for higher quality of leadership.

UNIT BANK ACCOUNTS
There have been i:<>veral recent inquiries concerning tax paye1 irientification numbers for unit bank accouu~~
Present treasury regulatio ns indicate that
individual B.S.A. units opening new bank
accounts will not have to furnish an
employer identification number. This is
based on an exemption for bank accounts
opened by "unincorporated subordinate

....... 'KE SIGNALS
VOL. 10 NO. 9 CHICKASAW COUNCIL, B.S.A. MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE SEPTEMBER, 1973
MEMPHIS STATE TIGER ROUNDBALL ROUND UP ANNOUNCED
The Chickasaw Council's 1973 exciting
Round Up theme is MEMPHIS
STATE TIGER ROUNDBALL ROUND
UP. The Memphis State Basketball Team
will serve as the focal point of this years
Round Up program and is probably the
most unique in years. The intent and
purpose is to provide our Cubs, Scouts
and Explorers the opportunity and incentive
to recruit their friend or friends
into the Scouting program. Most boys
join our program because they were
invited! Almost every Cub or Scout age
boy is interested in basketball and with
the Great NCAA Runner-up in 1972 right
here, it is logical that Scouting and the
Tigers team-up in our Roundball Round
Up. Every boy in the Mid-South deserves
the chance to be a Scout, and this
exciting program will help provide that
opportunity.
Coach Gene Bartow of the Basketball
Tigers has agreed to serve as Chairman of
this years Roundball Round Up. Coach
Bartow is respected both as a winner and
superb Basketball Coach and as a developer
of young men. He was named
"Coach Of The· Year" last year. He
assumes this responsibility with eagerness
and total cooperation as he is ardent in
his support of the Scouting program and
its' ideals. Needless to say, the entire
Chickasaw Council takes pride in welcoming
Coach Gene Bartow to our
"Team" of Scouting.
How does the program work? Beginning
Octo~er 1st, 1973, any Cub, Scout
or Explorer who recruits a non-member
into t_he program qualifies. All Packs,
Troops, and Posts will be given the
opportunity . to participate during the
month of September by setting a unit
goal of the number of new boys they will
strive to recruit. The unit goal should be
filled out on the special card and mailed
to the Chickasaw Council office. In order
for boys to win their prizes, use the
Round Up form to insure no misunderstanding.
Your unit must submit a
worthy goal in order for your Cubs,
Scouts or Explorers to participate.
What about prizes or incentives? We've
got 'em!
1. Each Cub, Scout or Explorer who
recruits a non-member will receive a
colorful collectors Tiger Roundball
Round Up Patch. Patches will be
awarded upon receipt of the Round
Up form mentioned earlier at the
Council office.
2. A special Free Basketball Practice
Session by the Memphis State
coaches and all the players will be
given in December or January. All
recruiters and new boys recruited
will be invited to participate.
3. Each Unit Leader, Cubmaster, Scoutmaster
or Explorer Advisor, whose
unit meets it's goal objective by
December 15, 1973, will be
presented with a handsome Coffee
Mug inscribed with the Round Up
emblem. This certainly will be a
collectors item.
4. The handsome Coffee Mug inscribed
with the Round Up design will be
presented to each experienced Den
Mother or Den Leader coach who
helps organize a new Den or helps
re-organize a Den that no longer
exists. Helping to recruit a new Den
Mother and helping her get started is
the aim of this recognition.
5. Two autographed, Memphis State
Basketballs will be awarded by each
district in the Council. Rules as to
how your unit may win one of these
will be determined by each district
and announced.
Wow! What an exciting Round Up
program. Be sure that the Cubs, Scouts or
Explorers in your unit get the word about
the Memphis State Tiger Roundball
Round Up. Don't wait ... Announce at
your next meeting!
SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 7:30 P. M. All

KAMP KIA KIMA
RECEIVES NATIONA-L
RECOGNITION
Kamp Kia Kima received the National
Standard Camp Rating for 1973. This is
the highest rating a camp can receive
from the regional office.
We wish to thank Shan Pitner, Camp
Director, and his staff for doing a n
outstanding job. All indications from
SMOKE SIGNALS
Scouts and Scouters seem to indicate that
the "1973 Summer Camp Season" was
the best in the history of the Chickasaw
Council.
The National Standards require a camp
to include such items as tested drinking
water, an adequate milk supply, refrigeration,
physical examinations, medical inspections,
health log, latrines, waste disposal,
state and local permits on licenses,
pre-cam p health and safety and sanitation
inspections.
FIRE DEPARTMENT-8.S.A.
FIRE PREVENTION
PROGRAM
The Chickasaw Council in co-operation
with the Memphis Fire Department
will participate in the "Cub and Scout
Fire Prevention Program." District Chiefs
Richard Johnson and M.D. Lee along
with volunteer Scouter George Dupont of
the Southwest District are the people
most responsible for developing this outstanding
program.
The details of the fire prevention
program will be explained at our fall
conclave programs and at the September
Cub a nd Scout Roundtables.
Listed h ere is a brief summa ry of the
ways the Cubs will take part in the
program: Each Cub will receive a brochure
explaining Fire Safety. He will then
take a short test on the material he has
read. Each Cub will be required to write a
fifty word essay on fire prevention and
make ·a home inspection. The Cub will
then be eligib le to buy a B.S.A. -
Memphis Fire Department Patch for 25¢
at one of the eleven designated fire
st ations across the city. McDonalds will
give each Cub a hamburger for participating
in this program.
The Boy Scouts will receive a brochure,
and they will then take a short test
on the material covered.
A council wide Fire Prevention Recognition
Program will take part in late October
to climax this outstanding program.

SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTING
Under the leadership of Richard
Allen, District School Night for Scouting
Chairman, we are hoping to enroll in
excess of l 15new Cubs and Scouts on the
night of September 18. Many boys will
show up to join because of the publicity
involved and because of their own interest
in Scouting. However, there will be
many other boys who would love to join,
but who do not because they are afraid
that they will not know anybody.
Friends are a very, very important
part of a Cub-aged and Scout-aged boys'
lives, and we can achieve a much higher
degree of success on School Night '73 if
we put forth the effort to utilize the
bonds 6f friendship that exist between
our Scouts and their non-Scout friends.
We can do this by, 1. informing our Cubs
and Scouts of School Night For Scouting;
2. Letting them know which school their
Packs and Troops will be attending on
School Night; and 3. Encouraging them
to invite at least one of their non-Scout
friends to join their Pack or Troop on
School Night at their assigned school.
By following these three simple
steps, we can put the golden opportunities
of Scouting into the lives of many
more boys. Somewhere in Crittenden
County, there is a boy that desperately
needs Scouting. Let's be sure to get him!
SCHOOL NIGHT FOR SCOUTERS
Yes, there really is such a thing.
Many parents will attend School Night
For Scouting. Make sure on that night
that they get involved with their son in
your Pack or Troop.

BEST WISHES FROM TOM MOORE
FOR DISTRICT
Effective September 1 of this year, I
assumed the duties of Field Director of
Service Area II with the Chickasaw Council.
In this position I will be giving
direction to the district executives of the
Southwest, Southeast, South Central, and
Crittenden Districts. My promotion
comes after four years of service in the
district, during which time we have seen
the district grow from 93 units to a total
of 115 and from a district of 2500 Scouts
to our current figure of 3800 boys
enrolled in the program.
During those four years I estimate
that I have worked with over 600 of the
best volunteer leaders any district or
program could have. To all of those 600
plus other individuals I say a most sincere
THANK YOU for your friendship, help
and devotion to me and the Scouting

parents and make School Night even

So make sure that every boy has the

concerning tax paye1 irientification

Prese nt treasury regulatio ns indicate that
