THE CHICKASAH THUNDERBIRD

WHY BE A BROTHER?
What does it all mean? I went to do
hard labor at Kia Kima, and all I got was
this stinking sash and pocket flap! Surely
doubts and questions this severe don't
run through your mind as you try to sleep
each night, but it makes sense if you are
an Ordeal member to have questions
about the Order; it's natural to want to
know more about this mysterious and
sometimes confusing organization.
The best way to get this
information, that is, to learn and grow as
an arrowman is to seal your membership
in the Order as a Brotherhood
member. Becoming a brother is not that
difficult, and you will benefit from the
increased knowledge and inspiration the
ceremony will bring you. Not only that, the
Chickasah Lodge will benefit from
stronger membership with every new
Brotherhood member.
Becoming a Brotherhood member
is relatively easy. And once again this
year, the Lodge is offering several
opportunities to complete this key step: at
the upcoming Ordeal work weekend at
Kia Kima, and each Thursday night at
summer camp. That way, you can choose
which seems more appropriate to your
summer plans.
Either way, the requirements are
the same. As a preliminary, you must
have been an Ordeal member for at least
ten months. In addition, you must meet
five challenges before you enter the
Circle of the Brotherhood:
1. Memorize the signs of Arrow
membership. Memorize the Obligation of
the Order, which you received from
Allowat Sakima (printed on the back of

4

•I

your membership card or in your
handbook) . Also, memorize the OA
Official Song, the Admonition, the sign of
Ordeal membership, and the Arrow
handclasp.
2. Advance in your understanding
of the Ordeal. Gain a thorough
understanding of the Ordeal through
which you have passed. Become familiar
with The Customs and Traditions of the
Ordeal given on pages 54-56 of The OA
Handbook(1991 ed.)
3. Serve your unit. Retain your
registration in Scouting. During your 10m onth period , strive to fulfill your
obligation by continuing and expanding
your service to your own troop or post.
4. Plan for service in your Lodge.
Retain your registration in the Lodge and
keep your dues paid. Be aware that
acceptance of Brotherhood membership
involves a pledge of service to the Lodge.
Develop a concrete idea of how you plan
to fulfill this pledge.
5. Review your progress. When you
earnestly feel that you have met the four
challenges above, write a letter to the
Lodge Secretary. In this letter:
- Explain what you think the
Obligation means.
- Describe how you have been
fulfilling this Obligation in your troop or
post and in your daily life, and how you
have used your understanding of the
Ordeal to aid in this service.
- Describe your specific plans for
giving service in the lodge program .
Bring this letter to the Brotherhood
with you.
SO DON'T DELAY ; BECOME A
BROTHERHOOD MEMBER NOW!

Brotherhood member of the Order. His
inspiration is Jim Williamson, his neighbor
and fellow Eagle Scout.

successful Troop is the knowledge and
effectiveness of its youth leaders. The
more experienced and prepared its
leaders, the more successful the Troop.

YOUR OPPORTUNI TY IS HERE!
Have the youth leader ship in your troop
trained by some of the best.
If you haven't figured it out by now,
this opportunity is the Chickasaw Council
Junior Leader Training at Kia Kima Scout

this action-packed week are: at least a
First Class Scout, 13 years of age, and
currently filling a leadership position in
the Troop. It is scheduled for July 10-17,
and places are going fast.
If you are interested in enhancing
your leadership skills or just want to see

Chickasah Dominant at the
SR-9 Conclave!
BY: PETER ABELL
From the rise of the sun to the evening campfire, the presence of the Chickasah
Lodge was felt throughout Camp Seminole. On lookers gaped as the Chickasah
Lodge made their many trips to the center of the Council Ring to collect their plaques
and certificates. The 51 ·members in attendance showed their true Lodge spirit in· their
poise, attitude, and attire.
The precedent was set by the awarding of the Mr. Ax award to Peter Abell fo·r
finding the secret brother. The Pre-Ordeal Ceremonies team- which consisted of Brad
Stevens, Jon Grizzle, Steven Zelinski, and Andy Bland- was awarded the Ceremonies
award of Merit, an honor given to only two Lodges. In the Team Dance Competition,
the Lodge placed second overall. Kevin Morton got second place in the Brotherhood
Run and the Lodge placed third in the Quest for the Golden Arrow. The highlight of the
evening came when the winner of the Ron Yeager Best All-around Lodge winner was
announced. Through vigorous judging there was a tie between Whitehall Lodge andneed I say it?- the Chickasah Lodge.
Congratulations to all those who participated in this Conclave. It was a
wonderful event for the Lodge and I cannot wait for next year!

opportunities to complete this key step : at
the upcoming Ordeal work weekend at
Kia Kima , and each Thursday night at
summer camp. That way, you can choose
which seems more appropriate to your
summer plans.
Either way, the requirements are
the same. As a preliminary , you must
have been an Ordeal member for at least
ten months . In addition , you must meet
five challenges before you enter the
Circle of the Brotherhood:
1. Memorize the signs of Arrow
membership. Memorize the Obligation of
the Order, which you received from
Allowat Sak ima (printed on the back of
your membership card or in your
handbook). Also, memorize the OA
Official Song, the Admonition, the sign of
Ordeal membership, and the Arrow
handclasp.
2 . Advance in your understanding
of the Ordeal. Gain a thorough
understanding of the Ordeal through
which you have passed . Become familiar
with The Customs and Traditions of the
Ordeal given on pages 54-56 of The OA
Handbook(1991 ed .)
3. Serve your unit. Retain your
registration in Scouting. During your 10-
m onth period , strive to fulfill your
obligation by continuing and expanding
your service to your own troop or post.
4. Plan for service in your Lodge.
Retain your registration in the Lodge and
keep your dues paid. Be aware that
acceptance of Brotherhood membership
involves a pledge of service to the Lodge.
Develop a concrete idea of how you plan
to fulfill this pledge.
5. Review your progress. When you
earnestly fee l that you have met the four
challenges above, write a letter to the
Lodge Secretary. In this letter :
- Explain what you think the
Obligation means.
- Describe how you have been
fulfilling this Obligation in your troop or
post and in your daily life, and how you
have used your understanding of the
Ordeal to aid in this service.
- Describe your specific plans for
giving service in the lodge program .
Bring this letter to the Brotherhood
with you.
SO DON'T DELAY ; BECOME A
BROTHERHOOD MEMBER NOW!

8 THE CHICKASAH THUNDERBIRD
Chickasah Dominant at the
SR-9 Conclave!
BY: PETER ABELL
8
From the rise of the sun to the evening campfire, the presence of the Chickasah
Lodge was felt throughout Camp Seminole. On lookers gaped as the Chickasah
Lodge made their many trips to the center of the Council Ring to collect their plaques
and certificates. The 51 ·members in attendance showed their true Lodge sp irit in· their
poise, attitude, and attire.
The precedent was set by the awarding of the Mr. Ax award to Peter Abell fo·r
finding the secret brother. The Pre-Ordeal Ceremonies team- which consisted of Brad
Stevens, Jon Grizzle, Steven Zelinski, and Andy Bland- was awarded the Ceremonies
awa rd of Merit, an honor given to only two Lodges. In the Team Dance Competition ,
the Lodge placed second overall. Kevin Morton got second place in the Brotherhood
Run and the Lodge placed third in the Quest for the Golden Arrow. The highlight of the
evening came when the winner of the Ron Yeager Best All -around Lodge winner was
announced. Through vigorous judging there was a tie between Whitehall Lodge andneed
I say it?- the Chickasah Lodge.
Congratulations to all those who participated in this Conclave. It was a
wonderful event for the Lodge and I cannot wait for next year!
