You are needed!
Fall Ordeal to be huge
That's right! The upcoming Fall Ordeal and
Brotherhood is expected to be one of the largest in the
history of the Chickasah Lodge, with nearly 150 candidates eligible to undergo the four tests of the Ordeal.
This means your help is needed. We need your
guidance and leadership to set the example for these
new members. You can help out in many ways, but
foremost among these is the elangomat program, in
which you will lead a group of candidates through the
Ordeal's tests by your example.
The event is set for September 18-20 at Camp
Currier near Eudora, Mississippi, and will provide an
great opportunity for the lodge to provide invaluable
service to the council's camp as it prepares for a season
of heavy use by the Scouts of the Chickasaw Council.
Not only that, the Ordeal will provide a chance for

Ordeal members who have been Arrowmen for at least
ten months to seal their membership in the Order
through the Brotherhood ceremony.
Finally, the Ordeal weekend will be the site of the
annual lodge elections. Here, youth Arrowmen can
help determine the future of the Chickasah Lodge by
casting their ballots for the three lodge officers. Those
interested in running for Lodge Chief, Lodge ViceChief, or Lodge Secretary-Treasurer should consult the
information on Page 5.
So, obviously the upcoming Fall Ordeal will be a
monumental event for the Chickasah Lodge, and _11our
help is needed to make this event-and the 1992-1993
lodge year-a roaring success. Sign up using the registration form on Page 4, and see you at Currier for a
weekend of service, fellowship, and fun.

Spring Ordeal prepare s
camp for season
Almost 70 new members inducted

Each Wednesday, members of the lodge dance
tt>am participated in the Heritage Night program.
Dancers Brad Stevens and Vince Perryman presented
three dances and called on audience members to join
them .
Abo, Arrowmen attending Kia Kima could attt>nd the weekly OA fellowship held after the Brotherhood ceremony.
u1 addition, the lodge conducted unit elections for
troops at camp and staged the callout ceremony on
Friday nights to recognize those elected for membership in the Order.
Plans are already in the works for Kia Kima in
1993. Make sure you're a part of it, whether by joining
the lodge camp promotions and unit elections committee to help promote camp for next summer or by joining
the Kia Kima staff. For staff applications, contact Scott
Stephens at the council service center (327-4193).

The 1992 Spring Ordeal and Brotherhood, held on
the weekend of June 5-7 at Kia Kirna Scout Reservation,
helped the lodge provide invaluable service in setting
up the council's long-term summer camp near Hardy,
Arkansas.
Nearly 70 Scouts and Scouters became members
of the lodge in the Ordeal, rendering cheerful service by
setting up tents, cleaning latrines, clearing brush and a
fire lane for the new Camp Osage central shower facility, and organizing the camp's health lodge.
As well, nearly 20 Ordeal members sealed their
membership in the Order through the Brotherhood
Ceremony.
Congratulatio ns go to Lodge Vice Chief Ken
Kimble, who coordinated the weekend's events, and to
all those members who helped make the Spring Ordeal
a success.

Thanks!

The Chickas ah Thunderbird

The success of Kia Kima 92 was due in large
part to the worl< of its staff. Likewise, the Chickasah
Lodye summer program was a major success because of the contributions of certain Arrowmen.
For the second year in a row, all youth
members of the lodge executive committee served
on the Kia Kima staff: Lodge Chief Hunter Baile y,
Lodge Vice Chief Ken Kimble, Lodge SecretaryTreasurer Andy Perry, and committee chairmen
Steve Edwards , Jason Stewart , and Alan Wright.
The lodge was able to complete unit elections for all troops needing them at camp thanks to
the help of these Arrowmen, plus Andrew Bailey,
Vince Perryman , Brad Stevens, Tony Bockhold ,
Patrtck Owen. Tom McGee. Peter Leonard. Michael
Johnson. Michael Bland . Walter Hoehn, Trey Cole.
Will Dotson, and others.
The Brotherhood Ceremony was put on b y
Stevens. Bland, Stewart. and Hoehn. while the hike
was led by Wright. Perryman. and Stevens. The
callout ceremony was a huge success thanks to
the contributions of Matt Williams, Corey Crowder,
and most of those named above.
The Lodge Secretary-Tre asurer wishes to express his apprec iation to Michael Jennings, Will
Dotson, Corey Crowder, and David Williams for
their help in updating the lodge records.
Thanks to all these staff members/ Arrowmen
for their help in making Kia Kima 92 a huge success
for the lodge and the Chickasaw Council.

Kia Kima will be the site of the annual lodge elections.
Youth lodge members present will select officers
for the positions of Lodge Chief, Lodge Vice Chief, and
Lodge Secretary-Trea surer. Those interested in running for one of these positions should see the information on Pages 5-6. Any Arrowman ma y run for office
provided he has completed the registration form on
Page 6.
In addition, the new Lodge Chief w ill select a
chairman for each of the three lodge committees. Those
interested in becoming chairman of the Activities &
\?ervice, Ca mp Promotions& Unit Elections, o r Cer-

emonies & Indian Affairs committees, should tell the
new chief of their interest.
The lodge will again be seeking qualified yo uth
members to serve as District Cow1eilman. Each district
will have a councilman to coordinate the camp promotions/ unit elections efforts in his district.
Finally, the three standing committees will seek
member involvement at the upcoming Ordeal.
So, the re are obv iously many ways for you to
exercise your leadership skills in the Chickasah Lodge
in the coming year. A good first step to getting involved
in the lodge is coming to the Fall Ordeal next month at
Cam p C urrier (see next page).

Do the only right thing: Beco me a
Brotherhood mem ber this fall!
What does it all me an? I went to do hard labor a t
Kia Kima (or Currier), and all I got was this stinking
sash and pocket flap! Surely doubts and questions this
severe don't run thrcugh your mind as you try to sleep
each night, but it makes sense if you are an Ordeal
member to have questions about the Order; it's natural
to want to know more.about this m ysterious and sometimes confusing organization.
The best way to get this information, that is, to
learn and grow as an Arrowman is to seal your membership in the O rder as a Brotherhood member. Becoming a brother is not that difficult, and you'll benefit
from the increased knowledge and inspiration the ceremony will bring yo u. Not only that, the Chickasah
Lodge will benefit from s tronger membership with
every new Brotherhood member.
Becoming a Brotherhood member is relativel y
easy. And once again this fall, the lodge is offering an
opportunity to complete this key step at the fall Ordeal
work weekend a t Currier.
Here are the requirements. As a preliminary, you
must have been an Ordeal member for at ten months.
In addition, you must meet five challenges before you
enter the Circle of the Brotherhood:
1. Memorize the signs of Arrow membership.
Memorize the Obligation of the O rder, which you
received from Allowat Sakima (printed on the back of
your membership card or in yo ur handbook ). Also,
memorize the OA Official Song, the Admonition, the
sign of Ordeal membership, and the Arrow handclasp.
2. Advance in your understanding of the Or-

~

deal. Gain a thorough understanding of the Ord eal
through which you have passed. Become familiar with

The Customs and Traditions of the Ordeal given on pages 5456 of thr O rder of the Arrow Handbook (1991 ed.).
3. Serve your unit. Retain your registration in
Scouting. During your 10-month period, strive to fulfill
your Obligation by continuing and expanding your
service to your own troop or post.
4. Plan for setvice in your lodge. Retain your
registration in the lodge and keep your dues paid. Be
aware that acceptance of Brothe rhood membe rship
involves a pledge of service to the lodge. Develop a
con crete idea of how you plan to fulfill this pledge.
5. Review your progress. When you earnestly
feel that you have met the four challenges above, write
a letter to the lodge secretary. In this le tter:
• Explain what you think the Obligation means.
• Describe h ow you have been fulfilling this
Obligation in your troop or post and in your daily life,
and how you ha ve used your understanding of the
Ordeal to aid in this service.
• Describe your specific plans for giving service
in the lodge program.
Bring this letter to the Brotherhood with you.
Ordeal membership is a time of learning and trial,
when you learn about the Order and its basic principles. Becoming a Brotherhood member lets you seal
your me mbership and rededicate yourself to these
principles.
So don't delay; become a Brother today. Complete and return the registratio n form on the next page
with your payment.

The Vigil Honor
Alertness to the needs of others is the mark of the Vigil
Honor. It calls for an individual with an unusual
awareness of the possibilities within each situation.
The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction reserved

fo r those Arrowmen who-by reason of exceptional
service, personal effort, and unselfish interest-have
made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate responsibilities of their position or office to one or
more of the following: their lodge, the Order of the
Arrow, Scouting, or their Scout camp. Under no circumstances should tenure in Scouting or the Order of
the Arrow be considered as reason enough for a Vigil
Honor recommendation.

When recommending an individual, please complete
all sections of the recommendation form. The more
information concerning the nominee's accomplishments
cind charncter the committee has ci vciilcible, the better it
can select worthy individuals fairly.
An y individual may recommend any Arrowman who
meets these requirements.

Spring Ordeal prepares
camp for season
Almost 70 new members inducted
The 1992 Spring Ordeal and Brotherhood, held on
the weekend of June 5-7 at Kia Kirna Scout Reservation,
helped the lodge provide invaluable service in setting
up the council's long-term summer camp near Hardy,
Arkansas.
Nearly 70 Scouts and Scouters became members
of the lodge in the Ordeal, rendering cheerful service by
setting up tents, cleaning latrines, clearing brush and a
fire lane for the new Camp Osage central shower facility,
and organizing the camp's health lodge.
As well, nearly 20 Ordeal members sealed their
membership in the Order through the Brotherhood
Ceremony.
Congratulations go to Lodge Vice Chief Ken
Kimble, who coordinated the weekend' s events, and to
all those members who helped make the Spring Ordeal
a success.

The lodg e will again be seeking qualified youth

will have a counc ilman to coordinate the c amp promotions/
unit elections efforts in his district.
Finally, the three standing committees will seek
member involvement at the upcoming O rde al.
So, the re are o bv iously many ways for you to
exercise your leadership s kill s in the Chickasah Lodge
in the coming year. A good first s te p to getting involved
i n the lodge is coming to the Fall Ordeal next month at
C am p C urrier (see next page). ,J
Do the only right thing: Become a
Brotherhood member this fall!
What does it all m e an? I went to do hard labor a t
Kia Kima (or Currier), and all I got was this stinking
sas h and pocket flap! Surely doubts and questions this
severe don't run thrcugh your mind as you try to sleep
each night, but it makes sense if you are an Ordeal
member to have questions about the Order; it's natural
to want to know m or e .about this m ysterious and sometimes
confusing organization.
The best way to get this information, that is, to
learn and g row as an Arrowman is to seal your membership
in the O rder as a Brotherhood member. Becoming
a brother is n ot that difficult, and you 'll bene fit
from the increased knowle dge and inspiration the ceremony
will bring you . Not only that, the C hickasah
Lodge will ben e fit from s tronger membe r ship with
ever y new Brotherhood member.
Becoming a Brothe rhood member is relativel y
easy. And on ce again this fall , the lodge is o ffering an
opportunity to complete this key step at the fall Ordeal
work weekend a t Currier.
H ere are the requirements. As a preliminary, you
mus t have been an Ordeal member for at ten months.
In addition, you must meet five challenges before you
enter the Circle of the Brotherhood:
1. Memorize the signs of Arrow membership.
Me morize the Obligation of the O rder, which you
received from Allowat Sakima (printed on the back of
your members hip c ard o r in yo ur handboo k ). Also,
me morize the OA Official Song, the Admonition, the
sign of Ordeal m embership, and the Arrow handclasp.
2. Advance in your understanding of the Ordeal.
Gain a thorough unders tanding of the Ord eal
through which you have passed. Become familiar wi th
The Custom s and Tradition s of the O rdeal given on pages 54-
56 of thr O rder of the Arrow Handbook (199 1 ed.).
3. Serve your unit. Retain your registration in
Scou ting. During your 10-month period, strive to fulfill
your O bligation by continuing and expanding your
service to your own troop or post.
4. Plan for setvice in your lodge. Retain yo ur
registration in the lodge and keep your dues paid. Be
aware that acce ptance of Brothe rhood m embe r ship
involves a pledge of service to the lodge. Develop a
con cre te idea of how you plan to fulfill this pledge.
5. Review your progress. When you earnestl y
feel that you have m e t the four challenges above, write
a letter to the lodge secretary. In this le tter:
• Ex plain what you think the Obli gation m eans.
• Describe h o w you have been fulfilling this
Obligation in your troop o r p ost and in your daily life,
and how you ha ve used your understanding of the
O rdeal to aid in this service.
• Describe your specific plans for g iving service
in the lodge program.
Bring this letter to the Brotherhood with you.
Ordeal m e mbership is a time of learning and trial,
when you learn about the Order and its basic principles.
Becoming a Brotherhood member lets you seal
your m e mbership and rededicate yourself t o these
principles.
So don't delay; become a Brother today. Complete
and return the registratio n form on the next page
with your payment.

The Vigil Honor
Alertness to the needs of others is the mark of the Vigil
Honor. It calls for an individual with an unusual
awareness of the possibilities within each situation.
The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction reserved
for those Arrowmen who-by reason of exceptional
service, personal effort, and unselfish interest-have
made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate
responsibilities of their position or office to one or
more of the following: their lodge, the Order of the
Arrow, Scouting, or their Scout camp. Under no circumstances
should tenure in Scouting or the Order of
the Arrow be considered as reason enough for a Vigil
Honor recommendation.
The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of
the Arrow can bestow upon its members for service to
lodge, council, and Scouting.
Any member of the Order of the Arrow registered in
Scouting and in good standing in a regularly chartered
lodge is eligible for recommendation to the national
Order of the Arrow Committee for elevation to the Vigil
Honor provided that at the time of his recommendation
he has been a Brotherhood member for a t least two
years. Because the Order of the Arrow is primarily an
organization for youth, preference will be given to
those who became members of the Order as Scouts
rather than to those who were inducted as adult volunteer
or professional Scouters.
