Attention:

Mr. W. G. Morris,Scout Executive

Dear Mr. Morris:
Your letter of August 22 regarding t·he sale of Kamp Kia Kima to the
Eastern Arkansas Council was considered cuite seriously at a meeting of our
Executive Board last Tuesday, September 16.
While, of course, we were quite reluctant to pass up the opportunity
of acquiring a ca.rap which had been used for a number of years for tho purpose
for which we wish to use it, yot it was felt t.hE.t owing to the limited financial resources of our Council and the fact that tho camp o.s at present is not
entirely suitublo for the current opinions ns to the best method of conducting
tho camps, and tho further fact th....'1.t rather oxtonsi vc repairs will be necessary
in order to ma.kc it oven sorvicco.blo for next year, it was tho unanimous opinion
th[l.t wo would ho.ve to decline your offer.
We approcin.to quite thoroughly tho ln.rge amount of sentiment attD.ched
to this camp by the people of Memphis, and it is not our intention to reflect
in nny wo.,y on this sentiment which is praiseworthy, but this sentiment docs not
at the present exist among tho scouts nnd scoutcrs of Eastern Arkansas, and
n. like son timcnt would hn,vo to be built up, which could be clone as well at
another camp a.s at Kamp Kia Kima. Inasmuch as it is necessary under our conditions to koop the :Boy Scou.ts as an c1.ctivc, progressive orgrui.ization, we do
not feel thnt we nro justified in :placing v.ny financial value on the sentiment
which e:dsts in n.nothcr, nlthough allied association.
Wo arc, therefore, cn,nvassing other sites in the same general territory, of which there app enr to be n.t lee.st fi vc reasonably well sui to cl for our
purposes, and will proceed with tho development of tho camp, which we believe
will fit in with tho present thought on cn.mping fully ri.s well as Krunp Kia. Kima.
Wo o.pprociatc very much the spirit of coopcra.tion which you have
shown, o.nd regret tlmt we cannot use these negotiations as an excuse to moot
with you and your group more often. Kindly convoy our utmost appreciation to
tho other mom·oors whoh..nvc boon present nt tho various interviews.
With best personal regards, we n.rc
Yours very truly
