A maximum limit of 300 campers & leaders per session has been established by the Council Camping
Committee for Kia Kima. The limit at Tallaha is 150 campers & leaders per session. Troops that have
not paid their $30.00 non-refundable but transferable deposit per boy may be requested to attend
another, less crowded session.

Scouts Who Need Financial Help
Limited camperships are available to help boys in need of financial assistance. Applications are
available at the Dunavant Scout Service Center. Early filing is necessary to ensure equitable
distribution of available funds. The deadline for campership applications is May 1, 1993. These
camperships will not pay all of a boy's fee. The boy's family, troop and chartered organization should
pool their resources first with a campership request to meet the balance.
Scouts who receive campership funds are expected to perform one or more service projects for their
chartered organization (or another religious, educational or charitable organization approved by their
Scoutmasters). The hours expended should be approximately equal to the amount of campership
awarded divided by $4.00. Campership service hours will not count toward any other BSA service
project requirments. This program is to be administered by the boy's Scoutmaster.

No Scout will be denied the camp experience because of lack of funds.

Cherokee Village. Many Islands Camp on the Spring River (501-856-3451) north of Hardy is also
popular.
There a re many recreational opportunities available in the vicinity of Kia Kima. O ld Hardy Town is
a 19th century railroad town overlooking the clear, chilly waters of the Spring River. Downtown
Hardy looks much as it did in Model T days (and the days of the first camps held at old Kia Kima) ...
and the merchants want to keep it that way. Most of the changes have occurred at the ends of town,
leaving the heart of Main Street a tiny preserve for antique shops, gift nooks, specialty stores, cafes
and craft shops. Other attractions include the Arkansas Traveller Folk and Dinner Theater, golf and
Mammoth Springs. Mammoth Spring State Park, located about 15 miles no rth of Hardy, is the site of
Mammoth Springs, which flows at the rate of 200 million gallons of 58 degree water daily. Forming a
scenic, 10 acre lake, it then flows southward as the Spring River, a popular trout and float stream. A
beautifully restored 1886 Frisco depot houses a collection of railroad memorabilia. Park facilities
include an information center with exhibits of the area's rich history and natural resources, picnic s ites
and a trail. Many park visitors also include a tour of the U.S. hatchery located within walking
distance.

Pets
Pets are not permitted at Chickasaw Council Camps.

Safety
National BSA policy permits the use of liquid fuel only under the direct superv1s10n of a
knowledgeable adult leader. Gasoline and other flammable substances are to be stored in the approved

Camp Osage or Camp Tallaha.)
Open flames (e.g. candles, sterno, kerosene lanterns, etc.) are strictly prohibited in tents.
In case of fire, the Camp Office is to be notified immediately. Each unit is to organize a Fireguard Plan
furnished by the Camp. The Camp Ranger serves as the camp fire warden . The Camp Staff members
serve as the principal fire fighters. All campers are required to stay clear of any fi re areas. Leaders
are instructed to assemble their Scouts in a safe a rea and take a roll call.
Personal firearms, fireworks, ammunition and bow-hunting equipment are strictly prohibited.
Camp provides all such equipment for various field sports activities.

The

Sheath knives and other weapons are not allowed at Chickasaw Council Camps.

Parking
The parking lots are provided for leaders and visitors. The Camp speed limit is 15 miles per hour.
Leaders take note: Drivers of vehicles at camp must be 18 and possess a valid drivers license. BSA
Health and Safety Standards (and good sense!) require that all truck riders must be in the passenger
compartment. Vehicles will not be pennitted in campsites or on roads within your Camp after 10:00 r:-n
on Sunday evening.

Health Lodge
A qualified individual is on duty at the Health Lodge twenty-four hours a day. In the unlikely event
of serious illness or injury to a Scout, he will be taken to a nearby hospital.
The Health Lodge is available to store and administer prescription medicines as directed by the Scout's
personal physician and parents.

Facilities for the Physically-Challenged
The barrier-free campsite at Kia Kima (Camp Osage) will accommodate up to 40 physicallychallenged Scouts. Prior arrangements must be made with the Dunavant Scout Service Center.

Insurance
All Scouts and Leaders registered at Chickasaw Council Camps are covered by accident insurance. All
accidents must be reported at the Health Lodge and be recorded in the Health Log in order for the

BSA Lifeguard certification has been established as a means to provide units (packs, troops and posts)
with qualified individuals within their own membership to give knowledgeable supervision for
activities on or in the water. The first standard in the Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat guidelines
establishes the need for qualified supervision. An adult currently certified as a BSA Lifeguard, or an
adult leader assisted by a Scout holding this certification, meets this requirement.
Adults who already hold BSA Lifeguard certification may qualify as BSA Lifeguard counse lors. The
camp aquatics director has more information.

About the Chick asaw Counc il Camp s
The Chickasaw Council operates three camp properties- Kia Kima Scout Reservation (with two campsCherokee and Osage) near Hardy, Arkansas, Camp Tallaha, near Charleston, Mississippi , and Camp
Currier, near Eudora, Mississippi. Boy Scout s ummer camp programs are offered at Kia Kirna and
Tallaha.

The Kia Kime Story
Kia Kima traces its history to the very early days of the Chickasaw Council. In 1916, Bolton Smith,
the first president of the Chickasaw Council, donated the original Kia Kima site. Bolton Smith went
on to serve as vice president of the Boy Scouts of America and to receive the Silver Buffalo award. He
named Kia Kima, which is a Zuni Indian word which means "'Nest of the Eagles."'

In 1948, the Chickasaw Council adopted the Order of the Arrow as a part of its camping program.
Chickasah Lodge of the Order of the Arrow was founded at Kia Kima and held its first call out and
Ordeal there that year. The Order of the Arrow, which traces its beginnings to Treasure Island,
Philadelphi a's Scout camp, replaced the earlier Council Scouts. The Order of the Arrow, Scouting's
Brotherhoo d of Honor Campers, has played a key role at Kia Kima ever since.
By the early 1960s Kia Kima had outgrown its original location. In 1963, West Memphis businessma n
John Cooper, who was developing the Cherokee Village community near Hardy, approached the
Executive Board with a proposal to exchange a 540-acre tract a few miles away on the edge of Cherokee
Village for the 160 acres of old Kia Kima. The offer was accepted and work began immediately on the
new Kia .ESirna. The new camp was ready for its first season in 1964.
The new camp was what we call Camp Osage today. A second camp, Camp Cherokee, was opened in
1965.

We are pleased to present the 1994 Summer Camp Leaders Guide for the Chickasaw Council Camps.
1994 will be the first season with coordinated summer camp operations fo r the Chic kasaw Council
Camps. Our summer camps, Kia Kima and Tallaha, offer a wide variety of physical facilities and
program opportunities. We will have the best program and the best staff possible for your Scout camps.
Kia Kima Scout Reservation is located in the foothills of the Ozarks, near Hardy, Arkansas,
approximately 150 miles northwest of Memphis. Kia Kima offers three d istinct camping programs.
Camp Cherokee is a patrol-cooking style camp located on Lake John Cooper. Camp Osage is a di ning
hall camp located on the banks of the South Fork River. Ozark Ven ture Base programs depart from Ki a
Kima for wilderness backpacking and canoeing expeditions. The camps at Kia Kima share a state-oft
he art Project COPE co urse, which was completely rebuilt in 1993.
Tallaha is located approximately 90 miles south of Memphis in the Mississippi Delta. The terrain of
Tallaha features towering pines and rolling hills. Tallaha is a dining h all camp. Many Tallaha
campsites feature cabins.
The Camping Committee, with its Camp Promotion, Camp Program and Procurement Subcomittees, has
been hard at work to ensure the best possible season. Many thanks to the Order of the Arrow for their
devot ion to camp promotion.
Whatever your troop 's interests o r needs, the Chickasaw Council Camps will do their best to meet
them. Whatever your plans, make sure your troop participates in the Great Adventure of Scout
camping!
Yours in Scouting,

a nother, less crowded session.
Scouts Who Need Financial Help
Limited camperships are available to help boys in need of financial assistance. Applications are
available at the Dunavant Scout Service Center. Early filing is necessary to ensure equitable
distribution of available funds. The deadline for campership applications is May 1, 1993. These
camperships will not pay all of a boy' s fee. The boy's family, troop and chartered organization should
pool their resources first with a campership request to meet the balance.
Scouts who receive campership funds are expected to perform one or more service projects for their
chartered organization (or another reli gious, educational or c haritable organization approved by their
Scoutmasters). The hours expended should be approximately equal to the amount of campership
awarded divided by $4.00. Campership service hours will not count toward any other BSA service
project requirments. This program is to be administered by the boy's Scoutmaster.
No Scout will be denied the camp experience because of lack of funds.

popular.
There a re many re c reational op portunities available in the vicini ty of Ki a Kima. O ld Hardy Town is
a 19th century railroad town overlooking the clear, chilly waters of the S pring River. Downtown
Hardy looks much as it did in Model T days (and the days of the first ca mps held at old Kia Kima) ...
and the merchants want to keep it that way.
Mammoth Spring State Park, located about 15 miles no r th of Hardy, is the site of
Mammoth Springs, which flows at the rate of 200 million gallons of 58 degree water daily. Forming a
scenic, 10 acre lake, it then flows southward as the Spring River, a popular t rout and float stream. A
beautifully restored 1886 Frisco depot houses a collection of railroad memorabilia. Park facilities
include an information center with exhibits of the area's rich history and natural resources, picnic s ites
and a trail. Many park visitors also include a tour of the U.S. h atchery located within walking
distance.
Pets
Pets are not permitted at Chickasaw Council Camps.

Camp Housing
Troop ca mpsites are outfitted with two-m an wall tents on platforms. Each tent has two bunks with
mattresses. Certain campsites at Tallaha have screened in cabins.
Each troopsite has a latrine and facilities for handwashing and showers. Central hot shower
fa cilities are available at both Camp Osage and Camp Cherokee at Kia Kima.
Safety
National BSA policy permits the use of liquid fuel o nly under the direct supe rv1s10n of a
knowledgeable adult leader. Gasoline and other flammable substances are to be stored in the approved
fuel storage area in camp. (Co ntact the Program Director at Camp Cherokee or the Camp Ranger at
Camp Osage or Camp Tallaha.)
Open flames (e.g. candles, sterno, kerosene lanterns, etc.) a re st rictly prohibited in tents .
In case of fire, the Camp Office is to be notified im mediately. Each unit is to organize a Fireguard Plan
fu rnished by the Camp. The Camp Ran ger serves as the camp fire warden . The Camp Staff membe rs
serve as the principal fire fighters. All ca mpers are required to stay clear of any fi re areas. Leaders
are instructed to assemble their Scouts in a safe a rea and take a roll call.
Personal firearms, fireworks, ammunition and bow-hunting equipment are strictly prohibited. The
Camp provides all such equipment for various field sports activities.
Facilities for the Physically- Challenged
The barrier-free campsite at Kia Kima (Camp Osage) will accommodate up to 40 physicallychallenged
Scouts. Prior arrangements must be made with the Dunavant Scout Service Center.
Insurance
All Scouts and Leaders registered at Chickasaw Council Camps are covered by accident insurance. All
accidents must be reported at the Health Lodge and be recorded in the Health Log in order for the

coverage to be in effect. This insurance does not cover sickness or injuries occurnng before camp or ch ronic
co nd itions. The camp's insurance policy pays the fi rst $150 of covered expenses. Coverage of expenses in
excess of $150 is coordinated with the Scout's family insurance coverage.
Drugs and Alcohol

Project COPE stands for "Challenging
Outdoor Personal Experience. " The
goals of Project COPE are to build
leadership, self-esteem, decisionmaking,
trust and teamwork. This is
accomplished by progressing, as a
group, through a series of
increasingly physically and mentally
challenging exercises that require
cooperation and teamwork to
complete. Kia Kima has one of the
oldest and finest COPE courses of any
Boy Scout camp, which was
completely rebuilt and expanded in 1993. The goals of Project COPE are to build
leadership, self-esteem, decision-making, trust and teamwork. This is accomplished
by progressing, as a group, through a series of increasingly physically and mentally
challenging exercises that require cooperation and teamwork to complete.
Project COPE - This program is designed for Scouts thirteen years of age and older as
of January 1, 1993. It includes week-long progression of increasingly more
challenging activities, c ulminating with the "high elements."
Project COPE is conducted from 11:00 until 3:30 daily. Lunch is provided at the
Project COPE course. Project COPE participants are required to wear long pants
during Project COPE activities daily.
Introduction to Project COPE
Daily from 4:00 to 5:00 pm, the Project COPE course is
open to Scouts of all ages. The purpose of this open
period is to introduce Scouts to the concepts of
Project COPE and experience first hand the
challenges that await participants in Project COPE. It
is desirable for Scouts to come in patrols or with
others from their troop.

The Chickasaw Council operates three camp properties- Kia Kima Scout Reservation (w ith two campsCherokee

He
named Kia Kima, which is a Zuni India n word which means "'Nes t of t he Eagles ."'

In 1948, the Chickasaw Council adopted the Order of the Arrow as a part of its camping program.
Chickasah Lodge of the Order of the Arrow was founded at Kia Kima and held its first call out and
Ordeal there that year. The Order of the Arrow, which traces its beginnings to Treasure Island,
Philadelphia's Scout camp, replaced the earlier Council Scouts. The Order of the Arrow, Scouting's
Brotherhood of Honor Campers, has played a key role at Kia Kima ever since.
By the early 1960s Kia Kima had outgrown its original location. In 1963, West Memphis businessman
A second camp, Camp Cherokee, was opened in
1965.

Kia Kima has continued to grow and prosper over the years, with the addition of many new facilities
like Project COPE and the majestic Golightly All Faiths Chapel overlooking the reservation. ...,___..
Kia Kima has had a rich history for its 77 years. It has seen visionaries li ke Bolton Smith and John
Cooper, who made Kia Kima possible, along with many others who have supported it fin ancially and
with their personal efforts. It has grown through the devotion of the well over one thousand people
who have served o n its staff. Approximately one hundred thousand Scouts, along w ith thousands of

For many years, Ca mp Tallaha served as the council camp of the De lta Area Council. When the Delta
Area Council merged into the Chickasaw Council on January 1, 1993, Tallaha became one of the three
Chickasaw Council Camps, alo ng with Camp Currier near Eudora, Mississippi, and Kia Kima Scout
Reserv ation, near Hardy, Arkansas, in the foothills o i the Ozarks.
The Delta Area Council was established in 1924. The first Boy Scout Camp in the De lta was held that
summer on Moon Lake near Lula, Miss issippi, and was called "Camp Chisca. · Camp Tallaha traces its
history to 1925, when the Delta Council purchased a 165-acre tract near Charleston, Mississippi. The
mess hall was built in the Spring of 1925, and the first camp sesssion was he ld there the following
summer.
In 1963, another tract of land near Tallaha was donated by A.J . Hill and is used today as a wilderness
camp.
The Order of the Arrow has been closely associated with Camp Tallaha. The fi rs t call out ceremony of
Koi Hatachie Lodge was held at Camp Tallaha in July 1946, and its first s ix members were camp staff
members. To this day, OA members visit troops to promote attendance at Tallaha.
Among the projects completed by the Order of the Arrow at Tallaha are the bridge from t he confe rence
center to the dining hall, the handicraft lodge, signs throughout camp, lake docks, co uncil ring, Chiefs
Lodge and Scout Museum.
In addition to the Order of the Arrow and other Scouters, the National Guard has been very supportive
of Tallaha over the years with construction and repair projects.
Camp Currier
Camp Currier, near Eudora, Mississippi, is the Council's most active weekend camping location.
Nearly every weekend year round, hundreds of Scouts come to Currier with their troops. It is also a
popular place for Cub outings. During the Spring, many district camporees and Webelos Encampments
are held here-it is big enough to accomodate two or three simultaneously, with room left over for troop
ca mpouts and other activities. During the summer, the pool is available to groups with proper
leade rship. Rowing and canoeing are also available.

CAMPERSHIP INFORMATION
Through the generosity oi some concerned supporte rs of Scounng, li mited funds are
,wailable as ··campers.hips " to help meet the n eeds of qualified Scouts with a financial
need. In applying fo r a campership, a Scout and his fa mily are reminded of the ninth
point of the Scout Law, " . .\.Scout is thrifty. A Scout works to pay his w ay and to help
o thers.· Scouts are encourag ed to plan ahead and work to pay their way to camp.
Scouts who receive campership funds are expected to perform one or more service
projects for their chartered organization (o r another religious, educational, or
charitable organization approved by their Scoutmaster. The hours expended should
be approximately equal to the amount of the campership awarded divided by $4.00.
Campership service hours will not count toward any other BSA service project
requirements. This program is to be administered by the Scout's Scoutmaster.
Campers.hips are considered o n a first-come, first-served absis,a s long as funds are
available and subject to the following conditions:
l.
3.
-L
6.
7.
The unit leader secures and com pletes the campers.hip application along with a
parent or guardian. The a pplication is fo rwarded to the Scout Se r v ice Cen:er
fo r the Council Camping Committee to review.
>Jo more than fifty percent of the camp fee will be g rant ed as a campers.hip. The
maximum campers.hip for 1994 is $45.00.
Campers.hips will generally not be awarded for provisional camping. They are
intended to enable the Scout to attend camp with his own troop.
Campers.hips are granted to individual Scouts. If the Scout who re ceives a
campers.hip is unable to attend, substitutions will not b e allowed unless a new
campers.hip application is filed in the name of the substitute Scout and approved
by the Council Camping Committee.
Campers.hip applications must be completely fille d out. Incomplete applications
will be returned for completion. Information on the campers.hip application will
be held in confidence.
Candidates for campers.hips must be registered Scouts in good standing with the
troop.
All applications must be signed by a parent or guardian, troop leader and the
district camping committee chairman or representative.
It is not the intention to limit the number of Scouts eligible for campers.hips. On the
contrary, we want to stretch the available campers.hip funds to cover as many needy
Scouts as possible.
Campers.hip applications must be submitted by May 2, 1994 to be considered by the
Council Camping Committee. Unit leaders will be notified by May 16 , 1994 of the action
taken by the Council Camping Committee in approving o r disapproving the
campers.hip application.
