What's New at Kia Kima

Dear Scouter:
Welcome to Kia Kima!
We are pleased to present the 1993 Kia Kima Leaders Guide.
The Kia Kima Advisory Board along with the council camping
committee and the council professional staff has been working hard to
lay out the program for the 1993 season at Kia Kima.
Among the new features you will find this year is an expanded Project
COPE program on a newly renovated and updated Project COPE
course.
Our Ozark Venture Base program has been relined. Each week, either
a 50 mile canoe trip or a backpacking trek ~ill be held. Consult the
Venture Base schedule in this Leaders Guide for which program will
be offered each week.
Several new merit badge programs will be offered this year,
particularly in the Nature Area, which reflect our renewed
commitment to conservation as a program emphasis.
We look forward to seeing you at Kia Kima this summer.
Yours in Scouting,
Ron Edmonds, Chairman

A Letter from the Reservation Director

Dear Scouts and Scouters:
The staff of Kia Kima Scout Reservation is ready to meet you at the
gate this summer and welcome you to a week of Scouting activities
and adventures for you and your troop.
Before the last campfire was out last season, we started working and
planning to make the 1993 season at Kia Kima the best ever.
Our goal is for every Scout to have a rewarding Scouting experience
and for every troop to leave camp as a stronger unit than when they
arrive.
The recipe is simple. You provide the Scouts, the leadership and the
enthusiasm. We will provide the camp facility, staff and other
resources. Together, we will create a rewarding Scouting experience
for all .
See you at Kia Kima.
Yours in Scouting,
Scott Stephens
Reservation Director

Chapel. A visit to the Chapel which is located on a hill-top
overlooking the reservation is a highlight for many campers. Bring a
camera!
Any religious group is welcome to hold its own service.

.....

The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's Brotherhood of Honor Campers .
Chickasah Lodge No. 406 of the Order of the Arrow was founded at
Kia Kima in 1948 and has been an integral part of the camp ever since.
The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is as follows:
To recol{nize those campers- Scouts and Scouters-who best exemplify the
Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recoKnition cause other
campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recoKnition .
To develop and maintain campinK traditions and spirit.
To promote Scout campinK, which reaches its Kreatest effectiveness as a part
of the unit's campinK prol{ram, both year-round and in the summer camp, as
directed by the campinK committee of the council.
To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership
in cheerful service to others.

Several activities are planned for Arrowmen at Kia Kima.
There will be an Order of the Arrow meeting and Fellowship on
Monday evening at 8:30 pm . The location of this meeting will be
announced at the Scoutmaster's Roundtable.
On Thursday evening, there will be an Order of the Arrow
Brotherhood Ceremony. The Brotherhood is for Order of the Arrow
members who have been Arrowmen for at least 10 months and meet
certain other requirements. Full details are available at the Monday
night Order of the Arrow meeting.
The Order of the Arrow Call Out Ceremony is a highlight of the camp
week. The call out ceremony recognizes those Scouts who have been
elected by their fellow Scouts as candidates for the Order of the Arrow.
Troops should confirm the names of those who are to be called out at
the Order of the Arrow meeting on Monday evening. If you cannot
attend the Order of the Arrow meeting, you should confirm the names
directly with the Order of the Arrow camp chief.

Project COPE

~~~llllWJ!!1m1m11rnm111mm~m~aemmmr~rnm·1mcR11'~~11mJ1!ifilm~me!lllllllllSll
Project COPE stands for "Challenging Outdoor Personal
Experience." Kia Kima has one of the oldest and finest
COPE courses of any Boy Scout camp. The COPE course
will be completely renovated in time for the 1993 season.
•
•
•
The goals of Project COPE are to build leadership, selfesteem, decision-making , trust and teamwork. This is
accomplished by progressing, as a group, through a series
of increasingly physically and mentally challenging
exercises that require cooperation and teamwork to
complete.
Two different COPE experiences are available this year:
Project COPE - This program is designed for Scouts
twelve years of age and older as of January 1, 1993. It
includes a variety of activities and low course elements.
Project COPE is conducted from 2:00 until 5:00 daily.
Advanced COPE - This program is designed for Scouts
thirteen years of age and above as of January 1, 1993. It
includes some basic COPE activities, plus experience on
"high elements."
Advanced COPE is conducted from 9:00 until 12:00 daily .
Special Requirements:
Project COPE participants are required to bring to camp a
completed Ozark Venture Base/Project COPE Parental
Permission Slip.
Project COPE participants are required to wear long pants
during Project COPE activities daily.
BSA Lifeguard certification has been established as a means to provide
units (packs, troops and posts) with qualified individuals within their
own membership to give knowledgeable supervision for activities on
or in the water. The first standard in the Safe Swim Defense and Safety
Afloat guidelines establishes the need for qualified supervision. An
adult currently certified as a BSA Lifeguard, or an adult leader assisted
by a Scout holding this certification, meets this requirement.
Adults who already hold BSA Lifeguard certification may qualify as
BSA Lifeguard counselors. The camp aquatics director has more
information.
The Kia Kima Story
wm~miai111111111~1~mmmrnm:ji1 1mi111>1m111~~1111~limOOJ!1m111m111~rnrni~
Kia Kima traces its history to the very early days of the
president of the Chickasaw Council, donated the original
Kia Kima site. Bolton Smith went on to serve as vice
president of the Boy Scouts of America and to receive the
Silver Buffalo award.
The original Kia Kima site stood high on the bluffs
overlooking the South Fork River near Hardy, Arkansas .
Through the years, this area of Arkansas in the foothills of
the Ozarks has become a center of camping and outdoor
activities. One of the first camps in the area, Kia Kima was
instrumenta l in the developmen t of north central Arkansas.
The Hardy area was a logical choice for a summer camp.
Many Memphis area families had vacation homes there
where they traveled to escape the oppressive summer heat
in the city. Hardy was a short four hour train ride from
Memphis on the Frisco line. Old timers recall the train
stop in Hoxie where you could buy a hot tamale.
In the early days, there was no bridge across the river, so
the Scouts were met by the staff at the Hardy train station.
The staff loaded the gear on wagons pulled by mules and
the Scouts hiked to the river and were ferried across to the
camp.
In the early days, the highest honor a camper could receive
was to be chosen by his fellows as a Council Scout. Those
chosen were led to a secret council fire deep in the woods
and given an Indian name.
In 1948, the Chickasaw Council adopted the Order of the
Arrow as a part of its camping program. Chickasah Lodge
of the Order of the Arrow was founded at Kia Kima and
held its first call out and Ordeal there that year. The Order
of the Arrow, which traces its beginnings to Treasure
Island, Philadelphi a's Scout camp, replaced the earlier
Council Scouts. The Order of the Arrow, Scouting's
Brotherhood of Honor Campers, has played a key role at
Kia Kima ever since.
By the early 1960s Kia Kima had outgrown its original
location. In 1963, West Memphis ~usinessman John
Cooper, who was developing the Cherokee Village
community near Hardy, approached the Executive Board
with a proposal to exchange a 540-acre tract a few miles
away on the edge of Cherokee Village for the 160 acres of
old Kia Kima. The offer was accepted and work began
immediately on the new Kia Kima. The new camp was
ready for its first season in 1964.
The new camp was what we call Camp Osage today. A
second camp, Camp Cherokee, was opened in 1965.
Kia Kima has continued to grow and prosper over the
years, with the addition of many new facilities like Project
COPE and the majestic Golightly All Faiths Chapel
overlooking the reservation.
Kia Kima has had a rich history for its 77 years. It has seen
visionaries like Bolton Smith and John Cooper, who made
Kia Kima possible, along with many others who have
supported it financially and with their personal efforts. It
has grown through the d evotion of the well over one
thousand people who have served on its staff.
Approximately one hundred thousand Scouts, along with
thousands of leaders, have had a summer camp experience
at Kia Kima in the laboratory of Scouting - the great
outdoors.
The Kia Kima Alma Mater was written at Kia Kima in the
summer of 1926 and has been sung by thousands of
campers at the close of camp ever since.
KIA KIMA ALMA MATE R
High above the South Fork waters
Reared against the sky,
Proudly stands our dear old camp
As the years roll by .
Onward , ever, be our watchwo rd
Conquer and prevail
Here's to thee old Kia Kima
B. S. A. all hail!
(written at Kia Kima - summer of 1926)
IT'S A LONG WAY TO KIA KIMA
It's a long way to Kia Kima
It's a long way to go
It's a long way to Kia Kima
Where the husky Boy Scouts go.
It's goodbye dear old Memphi s
Farewell old Court Square
Its a long, long way to Kia Kima
But my heart's out there.
What's New at Kia Kima
Dear Scouter:
be offered each week.
Several new merit badge programs will be offered this year,
particularly in the Nature Area, which reflect our renewed
commitment to conservation as a program emphasis.
We look forward to seeing you at Kia Kima this summer.
A Letter from the Reservation Director
Dear Scouts and Scouters:
The staff of Kia Kima Scout Reservation is ready to meet you at the
gate this summer and welcome you to a week of Scouting activities
and adventures for you and your troop.
Before the last campfire was out last season, we started working and
planning to make the 1993 season at Kia Kima the best ever.
Our goal is for every Scout to have a rewarding Scouting experience
and for every troop to leave camp as a stronger unit than when they
Order of the Arrow
The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's Brotherhood of Honor Campers .
Chickasah Lodge No. 406 of the Order of the Arrow was founded at
Kia Kima in 1948 and has been an integral part of the camp ever since.
The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is as follows:
To recol{nize those campers- Scouts and Scouters-who best exemplify the
Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recoKnition cause other
campers to conduct themselves in such manner as to warrant recoKnition .
To develop and maintain campinK traditions and spirit.
To promote Scout campinK, which reaches its Kreatest effectiveness as a part
of the unit's campinK prol{ram, both year-round and in the summer camp, as
directed by the campinK committee of the council.
To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership
in cheerful service to others.
Several activities are planned for Arrowmen at Kia Kima.
There will be an Order of the Arrow meeting and Fellowship on
Monday evening at 8:30 pm . The location of this meeting will be
announced at the Scoutmaster's Roundtable.
On Thursday evening, there will be an Order of the Arrow
Brotherhood Ceremony. The Brotherhood is for Order of the Arrow
members who have been Arrowmen for at least 10 months and meet
certain other requirements. Full details are available at the Monday
night Order of the Arrow meeting.
The Order of the Arrow Call Out Ceremony is a highlight of the camp
week. The call out ceremony recognizes those Scouts who have been
elected by their fellow Scouts as candidates for the Order of the Arrow.
Troops should confirm the names of those who are to be called out at
the Order of the Arrow meeting on Monday evening. If you cannot
attend the Order of the Arrow meeting, you should confirm the names
directly with the Order of the Arrow camp chief .
Project COPE stands for "Challenging Outdoor Personal
Experience." Kia Kima has one of the oldest and finest
COPE courses of any Boy Scout camp. The COPE course
will be completely renovated in time for the 1993 season.
The goals of Project COPE are to build leadership, selfesteem,
decision-making, trust and teamwork. This is
accomplished by progressing, as a group, through a series
of increasingly physically and mentally challenging
exercises that require cooperation and teamwork to
complete.
Two different COPE experiences are available this year:
Project COPE - This program is designed for Scouts
twelve years of age and older as of January 1, 1993. It
includes a variety of activities and low course elements.
Project COPE is conducted from 2:00 until 5:00 daily.
Advanced COPE - This program is designed for Scouts
thirteen years of age and above as of January 1, 1993. It
includes some basic COPE activities, plus experience on
"high elements."
Advanced COPE is conducted from 9:00 until 12:00 daily .
Special Requirements:
Project COPE participants are required to bring to camp a
completed Ozark Venture Base/Project COPE Parental
Permission Slip.
Project COPE participants are required to wear long pants
The Kia Kima Story
Kia Kima traces its history to the very early days of the
Chickasaw Council. In 1916, Bolton Smith, the first
president of the Chickasaw Council, donated the original
Kia Kima site. Bolton Smith went on to serve as vice
president of the Boy Scouts of America and to receive the
Silver Buffalo award.
The original Kia Kima site stood high on the bluffs
overlooking the South Fork River near Hardy, Arkansas .
Through the years, this area of Arkansas in the foothills of
the Ozarks has become a center of camping and outdoor
activities. One of the first camps in the area, Kia Kima was
instrumental in the development of north central Arkansas.
The Hardy area was a logical choice for a summer camp.
Many Memphis area families had vacation homes there
where they traveled to escape the oppressive summer heat
in the city. Hardy was a short four hour train ride from
Memphis on the Frisco line. Old timers recall the train
stop in Hoxie where you could buy a hot tamale.
In the early days, there was no bridge across the river, so
the Scouts were met by the staff at the Hardy train station.
The staff loaded the gear on wagons pulled by mules and
the Scouts hiked to the river and were ferried across to the
camp.
In the early days, the highest honor a camper could receive
was to be chosen by his fellows as a Council Scout. Those
chosen were led to a secret council fire deep in the woods
and given an Indian name.
In 1948, the Chickasaw Council adopted the Order of the
Arrow as a part of its camping program. Chickasah Lodge
of the Order of the Arrow was founded at Kia Kima and
held its first call out and Ordeal there that year. The Order
of the Arrow, which traces its beginnings to Treasure
Island, Philadelphia's Scout camp, replaced the earlier
Council Scouts. The Order of the Arrow, Scouting's
Brotherhood of Honor Campers, has played a key role at
Kia Kima ever since.
By the early 1960s Kia Kima had outgrown its original
location. In 1963, West Me mphis ~usinessman John
Cooper, who was developing the Cherokee Village
community near Hardy, approached the Executive Board
with a proposal to exchange a 540-acre tract a few miles
away on the edge of Cherokee Village for the 160 acres of
old Kia Kima . The offer was accepted and work began
immediately on the new Kia Kima. The new camp was
ready for its first season in 1964.
The new camp was what we call Camp Osage today. A
second camp, Camp Cherokee, was opened in 1965 .
Kia Kima has continued to grow and prosper over the
years, with the addition of many new facilities like Project
COPE and the majestic Golightly All Faiths Chapel
overlooking the reservation.
Kia Kima has had a rich history for its 77 years. It has seen
visionaries like Bolton Smith and John Cooper, who made
Kia Kima possible, along with many others who have
supported it financially and with their personal efforts. It
has grown through the d ev otion of the well over one
thousand people who have served on its staff.
Approximately one hundred thousand Scouts, along with
thousands of leaders, have had a summer camp experience
at Kia Kima in the laboratory of Scouting - the great
outdoors.
