In ·1958 it was the aim and goal of your Camping & Activities Committee to place in the hands of our Unit Leaders
across the Council, a program that would stimulate activity
within the local lmit and to establish such procedures that would develop good camping
technics and simplify ways and means to get the job done. This committee feels that the
Institutions and their leaders have done an outstanding job and are to be congratulated
on their fine accomplishment s. We are pleased to report that Chickasaw Council Scouts
and Explorers had 19,696 days of Camping in 1958 as compared to 16,786 in 1957.
ACTIVITIES ON A COUNCIL OR DISTRICT LEVEL IN 1958 .. were Scout-0-Rama, Camp-0-Ree,
Explorer Rendezvous, Explorer 0 1 Possum Hunt, Good Turn Day, Fire Prevention Parade, Camp
Currier Improvement Day, The Chickasaw Actiievemerit "Program and Weblos Day.
CANADIAN CANOE TRIP •• Beautiful waters of our Northern Lake country will long be remembered by 30 Explorer Scouts and their leaders who paddled these waters by canoe. Treks
of this nature for 1959 will be available to our Explorer units and are in the planning
stage at this time,
PHILMONT SCOUT RANCH , , Thirty three Explorers under their own leadership, participated
in three weeks of high adventure on expedition to Philmont Scout Reservation at Cimarron,
New Mexico,
BROWNSPORT LANDING ooo The Council Camping and Activities Committee leased Brownsport
Landfog Camp from Nicky Brothers Lumber Company and this year the committee has made
tremendous use of this property by operating a camp for Explorers, Two Explorer Rendezvous and one week of camp for Explorers were conducted this year, With the help of many
of our Explorer Leaders and all the lumber being donated by Nicky Brothers Lumber Company,
we have just about completed a nice storage building which will be used to keep supplies.
This beautiful camp is located on the Tennessee River and is available to Explorers and
their leaders anytime during the year,
CALENDAR OF EVENTS,, o Your Committee is happy to report the acceptance of our Calendar
booklet by the leadership of our Council and we are already looking forward to the

FINANCE COMMITTEE

It is the express purpose of your Finance Committee to build the finances
of Chickasaw Council on a sound basis •• in line with the principles of
good business and good Scouting,
We must first project ahead the financial needs of Chickasaw Council, based
upon an intelligent appraisal of the necessary professiona l staff to do an
efficient job and the expenditure s essential to carrying out a first-class
Scouting program, We must be ever alert to unwise and cnnecessary expend·
itures, which are prone to creep into any organizatio n and which always
lead to trouble,
After the budget projection, the Finance Committee must determine how re•
ceipts can balance the projected expenditure s. This is no easy task, Tiiii
demands for the support of character-b uilding and charity agencies in
Memphis, as elsewhere, are exceedingly great, and if Scouting is to escape
becoming a ward of the go«ernment, its progr.am must be handled as efficient!Your Finance Committee is endeavort.ng, as are other
ly as possible,
to cooperate with the Community Chest by coordi•
Council,

understandi
as
well
honestly, as
Throughout the country the majority of Boy Scout Counc:l.ls must supplement
United Fund or Community Chest support with funds derived from other sources.
In the past, Chickasaw Council has had a Sustaining ~embership program,
which has, so far, not yielded enough money to keep our Council from
operating at a deficit, This we cannot continue to do if we are to have a
sound Council, The Committee is now giving earnest consideratio n to the
development of a program that will afford business people in Memphis the
opportunity of, first, knowing more abo.ut Scouting and, then, becoming joy•
ous contributor s to its support •• not through fund drives, but through a
genuine desire to help our great cause.
The procedure for allocation of funds is for the appropriate operating
col!DDittees of the Council to make up budgets, which are carefully examined
by the Finance CollDDittee, If approved by the Committee, the budgets are
submitted to the Executive Board for final approval.. Our books are audited
by Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company, Certified Public Accountants ,

HEALTH

& SAFETY COMMITTEE

The function of the Health and Safety Committee overlaps those of other
operating committees of the Council, The fine cooperation of these other
Committees and of the individual Unit Leaders in the Council have contri·
buted materially to the Health and Safety Program,
Members of the Health and Safety Committee individually inspected our
camps before and during their operation and found several sanitation
problems which were immediately corrected or are currently in the process
of construction,

Jw;/ In ·1958 it was the aim and goal of your Camping & Activities
Committee to place in the hands of our Unit Leaders
across the Council, a program that would stimulate activity
within the local lmit and to establish such procedures that would develop good camping
technics and simplify ways and means to get the job done. This committee feels that the
Institutions and their leaders have done an outstanding job and are to be congratulated
on their fine accomplishments.
CANADIAN CANOE TRIP •• Beautiful waters of our Northern Lake country will long be remembered
by 30 Explorer Scouts and their leaders who paddled these waters by canoe. Treks
of this nature for 1959 will be available to our Explorer units and are in the planning
stage at this time,
PHILMONT SCOUT RANCH , , Thirty three Explorers under their own leadership, participated
in three weeks of high adventure on expedition to Philmont Scout Reservation at Cimarron,
New Mexico,
BROWNSPORT LANDING ooo The Council Camping and Activities Committee leased Brownsport
Landfog Camp from Nicky Brothers Lumber Company and this year the committee has made
tremendous use of this property by operating a camp for Explorers, Two Explorer Rendezvous
and one week of camp for Explorers were conducted this year, With the help of many
of our Explorer Leaders and all the lumber being donated by Nicky Brothers Lumber Company,
we have just about completed a nice storage building which will be used to keep supplies.
This beautiful camp is located on the Tennessee River and is available to Explorers and
their leaders anytime during the year,
CALENDAR OF EVENTS,, o Your Committee is happy to report the acceptance of our Calendar
booklet by the leadership of our Council and we are already looking forward to the
calendar for next year,
KAMP KIA KIMA: Kamp Kia Kima had 1177 paid Cam]'.llrs in 1958 compared to 825 for 1957.
Sixty different Scout Troops attended Summer Camp under their own leadership. We are
making wonderful progress in long range planning as we now have 69 units that have
already made reservations to attend Kamp Kia Kima in 1959. The demand is so great, the
Camping and Activities Coinmittee has extended Kamp Kia Kima from a six weeks camp to
an eight week camp for 1959. You will find listed below a Chart showing the Scout
Units that have already reserved a Camp site so they will be assured a place to camp.

CAMP CURRIER •• , Camp Currier was operated as a Council summer Camp with staff this
summer. The following projects were completed this year at Currier - - new roof on
Rangers house; new rotating mowing machine; complete overhaul of Camp tractor,
repaired and painting swimming pool; removal of three old cabins to make
way for new camping areas, Projects are already laid out to be finished
in 1959 that will help to make our camp one of the most beautiful
in this area.
CAMP FULLER ••• Camp Fuller had 172 paid campers in 1958 compared
to 207 for 1957. A study is being made of this situation at this

FINANCE COMMITTEE
It is the express purpose of your Finance
of Chickasaw Council on a sound basis ••
good business and good Scouting,
Committee to build the finances
in line with the principles of
We must first project ahead the financial needs of Chickasaw Council, based
upon an intelligent appraisal of the necessary professional staff to do an
efficient job and the expenditures essential to carrying out a first-class
Scouting program, We must be ever alert to unwise and cnnecessary expend·
itures, which are prone to creep into any organization and which always
lead to trouble,
After the budget projection, the Finance Committee must determine how re•
ceipts can balance the projected expenditures. This is no easy task, Tiiii
demands for the support of character-building and charity agencies in
Memphis, as elsewhere, are exceedingly great, and if Scouting is to escape
becoming a ward of the go«ernment, its progr.am must be handled as efficient!ly
as possible, Your Finance Committee is endeavort.ng, as are other
committees of the Council, to cooperate with the Community Chest by coordi•
nating our program with theirs and presenting our problems objectively and
honestly, as well as understanding the Community Chest's problems.
Throughout the country the majority of Boy Scout Counc:l.ls must supplement
United Fund or Community Chest support with funds derived from other sources.
In the past, Chickasaw Council has had a Sustaining ~embership program,
which has, so far, not yielded enough money to keep our Council from
operating at a deficit, This we cannot continue to do if we are to have a
sound Council, The Committee is now giving earnest consideration to the
development of a program that will afford business people in Memphis the
opportunity of, first, knowing more abo.ut Scouting and, then, becoming joy•
ous contributors to its support •• not through fund drives, but through a
genuine desire to help our great cause.
The procedure for allocation of funds is for the appropriate operating
col!DDittees of the Council to make up budgets, which are carefully examined
by the Finance CollDDittee, If approved by the Committee, the budgets are
submitted to the Executive Board for final approval.. Our books are audited
by Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company, Certified Public Accountants,

LEADERSHIP TRAINING COMMITTEE
The ability of the Boy Scouts of America to influence the growth and development
of a boy depends to a great extent upon the.education of the leaders in the
skills of leadership and their knowledge of the purposes, principals and techniques
of their individual jobs, Essentially that is the purpose of Training
and one which our Council's Leadership Training CoDDDittee has adopted.
The year 1958 has been an exceptional year, Below is the record of our tangible
results, however, there is an intangible record - WHAT HAPPENS IN THE LIVES OF
BOYS,
1, A continuing program of training opportunities, Increased number of
