THE HA I KYA TRAIL STORY
In the spring of 1971, Explorer Post 331, which specializes
in service projects, undertook the task of establishing a multi
purpose hiking trail at Ramp Kia Kima. In early I:iarch, t.hey
cleared out a ten mile trek, most of which is followed by
compass. The trail provides Scouts with an informative, scenic
and rugged tour over every type of terrain on camp property.
~·fany points of interest are found along the trail and a pano
ramic view of camp may be seen from a lBO-ft. cliff along the
South Fork River.
The trail also provides Scouts with the opportunity to
exercise skills such as compass reading and tree identification.
Many skill award requirements, as'well as parts of 6everal merit
badges, may be passed while hiking.
The trail opened in June of 1971 with the beginning of
summer CMdp. ~a.tbQ~ are tA~ee treekiR~ ~its f9r ebse~ift9

At this location, Spanish moss is found hanqing from the
trees. This is the only place in northeast Arkansas that
Spanish moss can be found.
8. Looking d~ln from the bluff, you should notice trees that
have been cut by beavers. Also as you look across the river
you get a good view of Kia Kima. At this point, you are 150
feet above the river.
~
9. Observe the hand hewn logs to the right of the cabin.
Also sunken holes found behind the house were probably cisterna
or storage cellars.
10. These two clearings were once probably gardens. A hoe was
found nearby which was probably used to chop cotton.
11. This old homestead site was probably a three room cabin
with a porch. Although most of the roads in the area at this
time were used to haUl railroad ties, the remains of a Model-T
Ford are found here. The cabin burned about 1935.
12. You should notice another rock wall on your left. This
wall was also used to fence off a field.
13. Here you find an old wagon rim used about 70 years ago.
14. An old gravesite is located here. Notice how just a
plain stone was used to mark the grave.
15. At this point, you will observe that two stone fences line
both sides of the road lining two old fields.
7.

19. On the west side of the clearing there is a stream r~~ning
south. Cross this stream and follml the trail going downstream.
The stream trail ends when you reach a road.
20. Follow the road south and you will return to the cabinand the
spring. Continue on the road until you reach a small clearing
by the river ];nown as Copperhead Point. At this Point take a
compass bearing from the' large marked tree, proceed up the hill,
and follow the trail easterly along the bluff.
21. Follow the trail as it turns in a northeasterly direction
and winds down the hill until you come to a compass bearing
Harker.
22. Follow the compass bearing through the woodS and across a
creek bed until you come to an open meadow. Cross this meadow
and continue to follow the compass bearings as listed. The final
compass bearing leads you back to the low water bridge at Ramp.
POINTS OF INTEREST

1. This rock wall was a boundary_for a garden ar a small field.
Rock walls were often used for property lines and also for
ridding the fields of rocks.
2. This old cabin was probably one of the first homesteading
sites in the area. Notice the hand hewn logs.
3. The broken caterpillar tracks came off of a bolldozer used

for building John A. Cooper Lake.

4. This is the location of an old house which was surrounded

by a rock wall in its day. llhat was probably a porch foundation

and an entrance road to the cabin is still visible.

5. This is an old saw used to cut railroad ties. The patent

date on the sawblade is June, 1902.

6. This is the largest natural SF ing on the reservation.

THE KIA KUlA STORY

The first president of the Chickasaw Council, Bolton Smith,
acquired the original Kia Kima in 1916. For many years the 150
acre camp located in the South Fork River near Hardy was con
sidered to be among the best in the nation.
Since 1916 more than 60,000 boys from the t-lernphis area have
camped here. Attendance grew to the extent that 150 acres could
not provide adequate campsites and program facilities. Outpost
camps were used to alleviate crowded conditions.
One of the first in the area, Kia Kima _attracted other ca"Ups
and was instrumental in the development of central Arkansas.
Scouting at Kia Kima played "a prominent role in the formation
of Cherokee Village, a retirement community located adjacent to
the camp. It started in 1946, when John A. Cooper, a lwest
Memphis businessman, purchased a tract of land there after making
several trips to bring his children to the Scout Camp.
In the years that followed Kia Kima and the village grew
in popularity. In the true Scout spirit John Cooper helped the
camp overcome many of its problems by providing such facilities
as a water supply line, a rifle range, a septic field, and
numerous other services.
Since Kia Kima could not take care of the Council's camp
ing needs, officials set out to provide the accomodations for
the future of the rapidly growing membership. A special committee
searched for suitable sites near the Memphis area.

Near the end of 1963 John Cooper offered to provide a new camp
for Chickasaw council in, the same general area in exchange for the old
Kia Kirna property. The new area, located farther up the river and
approximately nine miles fran Hardy, consists of 540 acres.
In the offer, Cherokee Village agreed to build a new dining hall,
install a water system, erect campsites, provide a lake, a road net
work, toconstruct a number of buildings, and to make other improve
ments. The new location was to include all the facilities essential
for an ideal camp to accamodate a minimum of 300 boys per week.
Officials of Chickasaw Council were elated about the exchange.
Late in January, 1964, the Council Executive Board authorized the
transaction, and work was started to make the new camp ready for uzc
that summer.
The first week of camp began on June 14. During each summer's
camping period, approximately 2,400 Scouts and Explorers participate
in a Scouting experience they enjoy and remember for many years.
Even before it opened, the new camp was enlarged. Several months
before opening 140 acres of additional property on the north and west
became available and the tract was purchased. Since 1964, Kia Kirna
has acquired additional land to bring the total area to about 1,000
acres and a capacity of 600 boys per week.
A new lake was ready for use in the summer of 1965 in addition
to Camp Cherokee, which became the outpost camp. The 45 acre lake
enables Kia Kima to of.fer an excellent acquatic program at both camps.
The present camp also includes an administration building, a small
hospital, and cabins, all at the main camp.
7. Cross the approaching creek and head for the top of the hill,
following the markers.
8. Bear right and follow the crest of the ridge south. As you enter
the cedar grove, bear more to the right and parallel to the edge of
the bluff (7).

9. Continue along the top of the bluff until you reach the lookout
point (8). No compass bearing is taken here, however there is a double
marker to indicate the lookout point.
10. Return to the trail and follow it until you reach an old house site
and barb-wire fence (9).
11. Foll~l the fence line east. Since Kia Kirna does not own the prop
erty past this fence, do not cross this fence.
12. At the end of the fence line you will dIscover an old road. Con
tinue along it in an easterly direction across a dry creek bed (10).
13. Farther up the road you will 'discover an old homestead on the left.
Just above the site you will take the road to the right (11).
14. Along this road you will pass a cedar grove and come upon a fenced
field. Turn left and follow an old logging road. Continue along a
fence line until markers bear to the left. The trail will come out
along the road heading north. Follow this road and you will notice
another rock fence. (12,13,14,15)
15. Continue on this northerly road until you carne upon a fence across
the road. Follow the fence to the left, always keeping the fence on
the right. Soon the fence turns back to the right, continue following
it until you return to the road. Follow the road until it turns 45 0
to the right. At this point turn 45 0 to the left and follow the marker
dOYln a gully and up the other side.

1. The trail begins a few hundred ft. north of the bridge on the
west side of the road. At this point go up the hill until you see
the first compass reading. Continue following bearings until you
reach U7.
2. After ,following #17 for about 30 ft. you llill come upon an old
road marked with a double marker. Turn left and follow this road
until you reach the broken Caterpillar tractor(point of interest#3)
Your next compass bearing is taken from here.
3. After following *24 you will, come upon an old parking lot.
Branching off to the left you will find a road going down-hill.
Do not take a compass bearing, but follow the road to the left
down-hill until you reach another double marker. From here con
tinue following compass bearings until #26.
4. Follow compass bearing #26 for several hundred ft. until you
reach an old homesite (point of interest #4) and follow the old
trail. Continue following markers for about 700 ft. until the
trail branches to the left and right. Take the trail to the right
for about 300 ft. and turn left on the remains of an old logging
road lined with rocks. Follow this forabout 100 ft. where the
next compass bearing should be taken.
5. You will find the remains of a sawmill approximately 150 ft.
from bearing #32. The next bearing should be taken from the north
east corner of the sawmill foundation. Continue for 750 ft. until
you come to a spring by a cabin. For the next several miles the=e
will be no compass bearing.
6. Follow the spring water down the hill fram the trough until
you come to a creek. Cross the stream and follow the markers for
about 25 ft. up the hill where you will turn right and follow a
southerly course parallel to the creek.

HISTORY OF TIlE HARDY AREA

The Kia Kima area is surrounded by interesting heritage.
Prior to l88fihis area was used as hunting grounds by the Osage
Indians. The Cherokee Indians passed through this area on their
Trail of Tears between 1832 and 1837.
After the Indians moved to their Oklahoma Territory, this area
was opened for homesteading and was populated by subsistance
farmers. They raised only enough food to feed their own families
and made money by hewing railroad ties and hauling them into
Hardy to be sold at the railroad tie center. These farmers also
raised cotton to make their own clothes. Most of the land was
cleared by homesteaders at the turn of the century and there is
a notable lack of old large trees in the area.
Soon after 1890 mechanization of the production of railroad
ties drove the homesteaders from their means of profit. Even
today Hardy is a large railroad tie center with the farmers
raising livestock as their cheif source of income.

THE HA I KYA TRAIL STORY
In the spring of 1971, Explorer Post 331, which specializes in service projects, undertook the task of establishing a multipurpose hiking trail at Ramp Kia Kima. In early I:iarch, t.hey cleared out a ten mile trek, most of which is followed by compass. The trail provides Scouts with an informative, scenic and rugged tour over every type of terrain on camp property. ~·fany points of interest are found along the trail and a panoramic view of camp may be seen from a lBO-ft. cliff along the South Fork River.
The trail also provides Scouts with the opportunity to exercise skills such as compass reading and tree identification. Many skill award requirements, as'well as parts of 6everal merit badges, may be passed while hiking.
The trail opened in June of 1971 with the beginning of summer CMdp. ~a.tbQ~ are tA~ee treekiR~ ~its f9r ebse~ift9 the prescerree of litany --.types of ~ilEllife which are ]7e~y aJ::nlftdMl't in this aXQQ. 7.
At this location, Spanish moss is found hanqing from the c~dar trees. This is the only place in northeast Arkansas that Spanish moss can be found.
8.
Looking d~ln from the bluff, you should notice trees that have been cut by beavers. Also as you look across the river you get a good view of Kia Kima. At this point, you are 150 feet above the river. ~
9.
Observe the hand hewn logs to the right of the cabin. Also sunken holes found behind the house were probably cisterna or storage cellars.
10.
These two clearings were once probably gardens. A hoe was found nearby which was probably used to chop cotton.
11.
This old homestead site was probably a three room cabin with a porch. Although most of the roads in the area at this time were used to haUl railroad ties, the remains of a Model-T Ford are found here. The cabin burned about 1935.
12.
You should notice another rock wall on your left. This wall was also used to fence off a field.
13.
Here you find an old wagon rim used about 70 years ago.
14.
An old gravesite is located here. Notice how just a plain stone was used to mark the grave.
15.
At this point, you will observe that two stone fences line both sides of the road lining two old fields.
19.
On the west side of the clearing there is a stream r~~ning south. Cross this stream and follml the trail going downstream. The stream trail ends when you reach a road.
20.
Follow the road south and you will return to the cabinand the spring. Continue on the road until you reach a small clearing by the river ];nown as Copperhead Point. At this Point take a compass bearing from the' large marked tree, proceed up the hill, and follow the trail easterly along the bluff.
21.
Follow the trail as it turns in a northeasterly direction and winds down the hill until you come to a compass bearing Harker.
22.
Follow the compass bearing through the woodS and across a creek bed until you come to an open meadow. Cross this meadow and continue to follow the compass bearings as listed. The final compass bearing leads you back to the low water bridge at Ramp.
POINTS OF INTEREST
1.
This rock wall was a boundary_for a garden ar a small field. Rock walls were often used for property lines and also for ridding the fields of rocks.
2.
This old cabin was probably one of the first homesteading sites in the area.

THE KIA KUlA STORY
The first president of the Chickasaw Council, Bolton Smith, acquired the original Kia Kima in 1916. For many years the 150acre camp located in the South Fork River near Hardy was considered to be among the best in the nation.
Since 1916 more than 60,000 boys from the t-lernphis area have camped here. Attendance grew to the extent that 150 acres could not provide adequate campsites and program facilities. Outpost camps were used to alleviate crowded conditions.
One of the first in the area, Kia Kima _attracted other ca"Ups and was instrumental in the development of central Arkansas. Scouting at Kia Kima played "a prominent role in the formation of Cherokee Village, a retirement community located adjacent to the camp. It started in 1946, when John A. Cooper, a lwest Memphis businessman, purchased a tract of land there after making several trips to bring his children to the Scout Camp.
In the years that followed Kia Kima and the village grew in popularity. In the true Scout spirit John Cooper helped the camp overcome many of its problems by providing such facilities as a water supply line, a rifle range, a septic field, and numerous other services.
Since Kia Kima could not take care of the Council's camping needs, officials set out to provide the accomodations for the future of the rapidly growing membership. A special committee searched for suitable sites near the Memphis area.
Near the end of 1963 John Cooper offered to provide a new camp for Chickasaw council in, the same general area in exchange for the old Kia Kirna property. The new area, located farther up the river and approximately nine miles fran Hardy, consists of 540 acres.
In the offer, Cherokee Village agreed to build a new dining hall, install a water system, erect campsites, provide a lake, a road network, toconstruct a number of buildings, and to make other improvements. The new location was to include all the facilities essential for an ideal camp to accamodate a minimum of 300 boys per week.
Officials of Chickasaw Council were elated about the exchange. Late in January, 1964, the Council Executive Board authorized the transaction, and work was started to make the new camp ready for uzc that summer.
The first week of camp began on June 14. During each summer's camping period, approximately 2,400 Scouts and Explorers participate in a Scouting experience they enjoy and remember for many years.
Even before it opened, the new camp was enlarged. Several months before opening 140 acres of additional property on the north and west became available and the tract was purchased. Since 1964, Kia Kirna has acquired additional land to bring the total area to about 1,000 acres and a capacity of 600 boys per week.
A new lake was ready for use in the summer of 1965 in addition to Camp Cherokee, which became the outpost camp. The 45 acre lake enables Kia Kima to of.fer an excellent acquatic program at both camps. The present camp also includes an administration building, a small hospital, and cabins, all at the main camp.
7.
Cross the approaching creek and head for the top of the hill, following the markers.
8.
Bear right and follow the crest of the ridge south. As you enter the cedar grove, bear more to the right and parallel to the edge of the bluff (7).
9.
Continue along the top of the bluff until you reach the lookout point (8). No compass bearing is taken here, however there is a double marker to indicate the lookout point.
10.
Return to the trail and follow it until you reach an old house site and barb-wire fence (9).
11.
Foll~l the fence line east. Since Kia Kirna does not own the property past this fence, do not cross this fence.
12.
At the end of the fence line you will dIscover an old road. Continue along it in an easterly direction across a dry creek bed (10).
13.
Farther up the road you will 'discover an old homestead on the left. Just above the site you will take the road to the right (11).
14.
Along this road you will pass a cedar grove and come upon a fenced field. Turn left and follow an old logging road. Continue along a fence line until markers bear to the left. The trail will come out along the road heading north. Follow this road and you will notice another rock fence. (12,13,14,15)
15.
Continue on this northerly road until you carne upon a fence across the road. Follow the fence to the left, always keeping the fence on the right. Soon the fence turns back to the right, continue following it until you return to the road. Follow the road until it turns 450 to the right. At this point turn 450 to the left and follow the marker dOYln a gully and up the other side.

DIRECTIONS
1.
The trail begins a few hundred ft. north of the bridge on the west side of the road. At this point go up the hill until you see the first compass reading. Continue following bearings until you reach U7.
2.
After ,following #17 for about 30 ft. you llill come upon an old road marked with a double marker. Turn left and follow this road until you reach the broken Caterpillar tractor(point of interest#3) Your next compass bearing is taken from here.
3.
After following *24 you will, come upon an old parking lot. Branching off to the left you will find a road going down-hill. Do not take a compass bearing, but follow the road to the left down-hill until you reach another double marker. From here continue following compass bearings until #26.
4.
Follow compass bearing #26 for several hundred ft. until you reach an old homesite (point of interest #4) and follow the old trail. Continue following markers for about 700 ft. until the trail branches to the left and right. Take the trail to the right for about 300 ft. and turn left on the remains of an old logging road lined with rocks. Follow this forabout 100 ft. where the next compass bearing should be taken.
5.
You will find the remains of a sawmill approximately 150 ft. from bearing #32. The next bearing should be taken from the northeast corner of the sawmill foundation. Continue for 750 ft. until you come to a spring by a cabin. For the next several miles the=e will be no compass bearing.
6.
Follow the spring water down the hill fram the trough until you come to a creek. Cross the stream and follow the markers for about 25 ft. up the hill where you will turn right and follow a southerly course parallel to the creek.

HISTORY OF TIlE HARDY AREA
The Kia Kima area is surrounded by interesting heritage. Prior to l88fihis area was used as hunting grounds by the Osage Indians. The Cherokee Indians passed through this area on their Trail of Tears between 1832 and 1837.
After the Indians moved to their Oklahoma Territory, this area was opened for homesteading and was populated by subsistance farmers. They raised only enough food to feed their own families and made money by hewing railroad ties and hauling them into Hardy to be sold at the railroad tie center. These farmers also raised cotton to make their own clothes. Most of the land was cleared by homesteaders at the turn of the century and there is a notable lack of old large trees in the area.
Soon after 1890 mechanization of the production of railroad ties drove the homesteaders from their means of profit. Even today Hardy is a large railroad tie center with the farmers raising livestock as their cheif source of income.
