You would have also been able to attend the Order of the Arrow’s event that was so great that it even had a set of huge water slides guarding the exit. The event was know as the Mysterium Compass. It was a crash course in moral choices. The whole event was one big moral battle. Do you let life get to you? Do you just let everything fall apart? No, we as scouts carry on and live life. We help others and in doing so better ourselves. As the Senior Patrol Leader for troop One 805, This was a very helpful experience. It allowed me to see things that might hold me back during the rest of my tour as SPL. There is another thing that should be brought up about this event. Several of our lodge’s members helped set up and run the event. Mike Haskins and Jake Lane both staffed the Mysterium Compass. If you see either of those people, ask them about it. They can tell you more than I could. The Dancing Bear: Ahoalan �achpikin, Lodge 558 Page 1 �The final report from the 2010 conclave is finally here! This year, our lodge packed up and took a bus to camp Boxwell near Lebanon, TN. We went as a mob of maple syrup chugging Canadians and absolutely showed everyone what spirit looks like. We charged into each event with vigor and we thought we were a shoe-in for this year’s spirit award. If you are new to our lodge or haven’t been told about a conclave, our lodge was a habit of winning the coveted spirit award. For the last two, years we won by a landslide. This year however, there was no spirit award. Do not fret though, even without the award, we had one of the best times someone could have outdoors. If you’ve been to a conclave, I’m willing to bet I’ll see you at the next one. If not, ask one of the LEC members on the last page. They can tell you how amazing it is. I hope to see you at Conclave 2011. Stay posted for updates and next year’s theme. Our lodge started a tradition of summer fellowships during summer camp recently. This year OK’s Jake Dover led the charge to prepare the event. It was filled with fun, music, and food. While there, members of the OA also provided a willing hand in preparations for the closing campfire. The atmosphere was perfect for cheerful service and kindred values. If you see Jake Dover in the next few weeks, give him a pat on the back for an amazing job during the summer. That means we need strong willed individuals to volunteer as Elangomats. If you have not had the honor of serving is such a position, I recommend that you contact the new lodge chief, Johnny Tracey, for instructions on how to volunteer and carry out this sacred duty. When you first went through the ordeal, you might not have had your full wits about you. This duty offers another view of how to serve cheerfully and with all you can offer. Look on the next page for the sign-up sheet for ordeal, and on page five for Johnny Tracy's contact information For you who are new OA members, there may still be a bad taste in your mouth from Ordeal. Before you decide that there is no fun in the Order of the Arrow, attend this year’s fall fellowship. This year we will have sea kayaking, skeet shooting, currier hikes, Native American demonstrations, water activities, chapter competitions, a huge capture the flag game, and many other events. I can guarantee that this event will be one you remember for “many moons” afterward. It will be at camp Currier October 1-3. It will cost $15 per person, or $30 for Brotherhood candidates. I am excited and looking forward to working with and for each and every member of our lodge so that we might continue our successes, improve our shortcomings, and implement new ideas. Fall Fellowship will offer some exciting program and training opportunities that have not been available in the past (plus we’ll have great food!). Both of these events are also opportunities to pursue Brotherhood membership. At Scout base, the Lodge will form its second Service Corps, a group of Arrowmen who will assist with traffic control, program and support needs, and with shows. NOAC 2012 will be held at Michigan State University from July 30 through August 4, 2012 and is projected to be one of the largest in the Order’s history with more than 8,000 Arrowmen in attendance. NOAC will feature a number of unique events, including national competitions for ceremonies, drum, and dance; evening shows; the OA history museum; and awesome recreation competitions such as soccer, basketball, and ultimate Frisbee.. Highlights such as the Founder’s Day festivities including the Founder’s Day Parade, the Grand Hodag, and the inter-Region dodge ball battle are some of the exciting events at NOAC. Arrowmen can participate in service projects, high adventure opportunities, leadership training, American Indian Activities training, and much more. While enjoying the various activities, Scouts will have a great time meeting new brothers and sharing their experiences with people from around the nation. This year the section has picked to have a theme, which is “The end of the world.” Every year the Lodge picks a theme for Conclave, and the theme this year is pirates. This theme has not been done before and will be a very fun theme to take to Conclave! Come support the Lodge to be the best Lodge in the section! Earn your Bachelors, Masters, or even a Ph.D. at one of the schools offered at Conclave. For those of you who have never been to a Conclave, it is a gathering of Arrowmen from around the ten lodges in our section. On average, there is about 800 to 1,000 Arrowmen in attendance. This year Sakima Machque is planning on doing ceremonies, Indian dances, and tons of cheerful service. This year we have planned to kick it off with ceremonies, hoping to get our own team started and possibly do Ordeal and Brotherhood Ceremonies. We have already picked out teams and hope to have them doing Fall Ordeal. After that is Cheerful Service, what would the Order of the Arrow be without it? Members of the Chapter have planned on attending Fellowships, Ordeals, and even Service Corps at Scoutbase! Early in the spring, Andrew and I swapped ideas, and decided upon adding a new Vice Chief position to avail and reconstruct the Lodge. It was decided that the new position would be called the Vice Chief of Inductions. This new task, which will be available to apply for at Fall Fellowship, will have the responsibilities of the positions that were molded into it. Firstly, it will take place of the Vice Chief of American Indian Affairs and Vice Chief of Camping and Unit Promotions. These positions were studied and concluded to be only managerial positions that held no actual power within the confines of the lodge, thusly being needless. The second set of soon to be former positions that will be melded into the new Vice Chief are the Service Committee Chair and the Events Committee Chair. These were found to be redundant in the Lodge, for the Events Committee had the same responsibilities as the Vice Chief of Activities, and the Service Committee was found to be too easily incorporated to Vice Chief of Inductions to pass by. The position will be a combination of the four current positions, and because of the large responsibility, we found it only right to make the position comparable to that of a Vice Chief. October is packed with events. We have our Fall Fellowship on October 4-6 at Camp Currier and then a ServiceCorps for Akela Cub October 11-13 and again 25-27. ServiceCorps ranges from simple jobs to helping staff an Indian Village. In November we’ll have our Lodge Family Banquet on November 23. At the Banquet you’ll experience great food, an awesome Keynote speaker, a silent auction, and all the awards from the year. Exciting changes are happening in the Order as we approach the Centennial Celebration of our high traditions in 2015! Plans are already being made for the National Order of the Arrow Conference at Michigan State University from August 3-8. Make plans to attend now! I look forward to seeing all of you at the upcoming events and at Council events wearing your Ahoalan-Nachpikin gear from the Trading Post! Advisor’s Report 2 What’s in it for me? Not the usual question you would think you would hear from the Order of the Arrow is it? But change the emphasis and you will get a little different meaning. What’s IN IT for me? See the change? And that is a good question. If you are new to the Order, you may be asking yourself that question. And let me tell you, there is a lot in the Order available for you. Ever wanted to know more about Native American dancing and drumming? What about those guys in costumes who did my ceremonies? How do all these events get planned and executed? What exactly is an elangomat and why would I want to do that? You mean I can design the next lodge event flap? We have committees and youth volunteers for everything we do in the Order of the Arrow. Just like your troop, we are a youthled organization and we need your talents and interests to make this thing work and grow. Whatever you are interested in, we probably have it in the OA. Whatever your talent is, we probably need it in the OA. Just want to have fun and make new friends? We have that also. So consider this your first invitation to get involved. We need your talent, enthusiasm and abilities to have a great lodge. And Ahoalan-Nachpikin does need you. So, what’s in it for me? Answer that question and then go for it in the Order of the Arrow. �Lorem Ipsum Dolor Issue [#] :: [Date] Continue from Page 1- Lodge Restructure within the confines of the Restructure is the second brand new position that will be added. The Historical Committee will serve responsible for reaching, compiling, and documenting data of the Lodge. This includes gathering and taking photos of events and creating displays to be used to show Section and National events, such as Conclave and NOAC. This will help to increase the active population of the Lodge but showing them other events that the Order of the Arrow offers. This restructure was adopted by the Lodge Executive Committee at their August meeting, and will be presented for a vote before the whole Lodge at Fall Ordeal. Arrowman from Maine receives Heroism Award Parker Montano, a 15 year old member of Troop 1 and an Ordeal member of Madockawanda Lodge out of Portland, Maine, will receive the BSA’s Heroism Award for rescuing two people at a hotel swimming pool within minutes of each other. Montano was swimming when another youth grabbed onto him in a panic and pulled him under the water. Montano responded calmly and quickly reacted to preserve his own life and the life of the panicking boy. He used rescue techniques that he learned in Scouting to take control of the situation and to bring him to the pool’s edge, said Parker’s Scoutmaster, John Hume, recounting the ordeal. “The kids are taught first aid and rescue techniques,” said Hume. “Most of us take CPR, and most of us never use it. Parker was able to put his training to use when people needed it most.” Immediately after getting the young man out of the pool, Montano went into action again when a woman began screaming that her daughter had not resurfaced from under the water. Montano scanned the pool to locate the drowning girl and immediately decided he had to dive into the pool to save her. The girl was rescued and began breathing as soon as Montano was able to bring her to safety. Montano said that Scouting had given him the training to respond to these pleas for help, almost like an impulse. He said, “it seemed like it [was] what was right at the moment. My mind processed it later.” Legacy Contest In preparation for the 100th Anniversary of our Order, we have been tasked with creating a painting to mark the legacy our Lodge has made in our Council for the past 100 years and how we will continue to serve in the next century of service. For NOAC it will be painted on the blank lid of a crate we received at the last NOAC. So we are going to have a contest! Submit ideas/sketches to the Key 3 (lodgechief@chickasawoa.org). We will choose the best idea and have it painted. As a prize we will also present a framed print of the Legacy Lid to the winning Arrowman at Banquet. The deadline for submissions is October 20th. Get those submissions in! 5 Ways to Get More Involved in our Order Your experience in the Order of the Arrow doesn’t have to end with the Ordeal. Here are five ways you can become move involved in the Order. 1.Become a Brotherhood Member- You’re eligible 9 months after your Ordeal; it’s the ultimate step in confirming your membership in the Order of the Arrow 2. Attend a Lodge event- Fall Fellowship is a great place to start 3. Serve as an Elangomat- we need ‘em for every Ordeal 4. Become a Troop Representative- Check out the article on the next page 5. Attend an LEC MeetingAt the end of every lodge event there is a Lodge Executive Council meeting and all Arrowmen are invited 3 �Lorem Ipsum Dolor [Issue] :: [Date] OA Troop Representative The Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth serving his troop as the primary liaison to the troop’s lodge or chapter. He meets the unit’s needs by providing a communication and programmatic link to and from all Arrowmen, Scouts who are not presently members of the Order, and adult leaders. These efforts are meant to assist the unit and its members in achieving the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the same time fulfilling the lodge’s role in the Strategic Plan of the Order of the Arrow of being an integral part of the council. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his unit. OA Troop Representative Duties: • Attends troop and chapter or lodge meetings regularly as a youth representative of the troop and Order. • Serves as a two-way communication link between the troop and the lodge or chapter. • Arranges with the lodge or chapter election team to conduct an annual Order of the Arrow election for the troop at a time approved by the Patrol Leaders Council. • Arranges with the lodge or chapter for at least one camp promotion visit to the unit annually. • Makes at least one high adventure presentation to the troop, to include the OA programs, annually. • As requested by the SPL, participates in Troop Courts of Honor by recognizing: high adventure participation of troop members, induction of new OA members, changes in OA honors of troop members, leadership of troop members, and other appropriate activities. • Coordinates the Ordeal Induction process for newly elected candidates by: ensuring they know the time and location of the Ordeal, providing information of what to bring to the Ordeal, assisting (as needed) in arranging transportation to the Ordeal, and offering assistance (as needed) to the lodge in the Ordeal process. • Assists current Ordeal members in the troop in sealing their membership by becoming Brotherhood members by: ensuring they know the time and location of Brotherhood opportunities, assisting (as needed) in arranging transportation to the Brotherhood opportunities, and offering assistance to the lodge (as needed) in the Brotherhood process. He may also, at the discretion of the PLC, offer periodic training and discussions of OA principles, symbolism, and the Legend as needed by and appropriate for the troop members of the Order. • Leads at least one troop service project for the community or charter partner during the year. Firstly, it will take place of the Vice Chief of American Indian Affairs and Vice Chief of Camping and Unit Promotions. These positions were studied and concluded to be only managerial positions that held no actual power within the confines of the lodge, thusly being needless. The second set of soon to be former positions that will be melded into the new Vice Chief are the Service Committee Chair and the Events Committee Chair. These were found to be redundant in the Lodge, for the Events Committee had the same responsibilities as the Vice Chief of Activities, and the Service Committee was found to be too easily incorporated to Vice Chief of Inductions to pass by. The position will be a combination of the four current positions, and because of the large responsibility, we found it only right to make the position comparable to that of a Vice Chief. Not the usual question you would think you would hear from the Order of the Arrow is it? But change the emphasis and you will get a little different meaning. What’s IN IT for me? See the change? And that is a good question. If you are new to the Order, you may be asking yourself that question. And let me tell you, there is a lot in the Order available for you. Ever wanted to know more about Native American dancing and drumming? What about those guys in costumes who did my ceremonies? How do all these events get planned and executed? What exactly is an elangomat and why would I want to do that? You mean I can design the next lodge event flap? We have committees and youth volunteers for everything we do in the Order of the Arrow. Just like your troop, we are a youthled organization and we need your talents and interests to make this thing work and grow. Whatever you are interested in, we probably have it in the OA. Whatever your talent is, we probably need it in the OA. Just want to have fun and make new friends? We have that also. So consider this your first invitation to get involved. The Historical Committee will serve responsible for reaching, compiling, and documenting data of the Lodge. This includes gathering and taking photos of events and creating displays to be used to show Section and National events, such as Conclave and NOAC. This will help to increase the active population of the Lodge but showing them other events that the Order of the Arrow offers. This restructure was adopted by the Lodge Executive Committee at their August meeting, and will be presented for a vote before the whole Lodge at Fall Ordeal. Your experience in the Order of the Arrow doesn’t have to end with the Ordeal. Here are five ways you can become move involved in the Order. 1.Become a Brotherhood Member- You’re eligible 9 months after your Ordeal; it’s the ultimate step in confirming your membership in the Order of the Arrow 2. Attend an LEC Meeting- At the end of every lodge event there is a Lodge Executive Council meeting and all Arrowmen are invited 5 Ways to Get More Involved in our Order Arrowman from Maine receives Heroism Award Parker Montano, a 15 year old member of Troop 1 and an Ordeal member of Madockawanda Lodge out of Portland, Maine, will receive the BSA’s Heroism Award for rescuing two people at a hotel swimming pool within minutes of each other. Montano was swimming when another youth grabbed onto him in a panic and pulled him under the water. Montano responded calmly and quickly reacted to preserve his own life and the life of the panicking boy. He used rescue techniques that he learned in Scouting to take control of the situation and to bring him to the pool’s edge, said Parker’s Scoutmaster, John Hume, recounting the ordeal. “The kids are taught first aid and rescue techniques,” said Hume. “Most of us take CPR, and most of us never use it. Parker was able to put his training to use when people needed it most.” Immediately after getting the young man out of the pool, Montano went into action again when a woman began screaming that her daughter had not resurfaced from under the water. Montano scanned the pool to locate the drowning girl and immediately decided he had to dive into the pool to save her. The girl was rescued and began breathing as soon as Montano was able to bring her to safety. Montano said that Scouting had given him the training to respond to these pleas for help, almost like an impulse. He said, “it seemed like it [was] what was right at the moment. My mind processed it later.” Legacy Contest In preparation for the 100th Anniversary of our Order, we have been tasked with creating a painting to mark the legacy our Lodge has made in our Council for the past 100 years and how we will continue to serve in the next century of service. For NOAC it will be painted on the blank lid of a crate we received at the last NOAC. So we are going to have a contest! Submit ideas/sketches to the Key 3 (lodgechief@chickasawoa.org). We will choose the best idea and have it painted. As a prize we will also present a framed print of the Legacy Lid to the winning Arrowman at Banquet. The deadline for submissions is October 20th. Lorem Ipsum Dolor [Issue] :: [Date] 4 OA Troop Representative The Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth serving his troop as the primary liaison to the troop’s lodge or chapter. He meets the unit’s needs by providing a communication and programmatic link to and from all Arrowmen, Scouts who are not presently members of the Order, and adult leaders. These efforts are meant to assist the unit and its members in achieving the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the same time fulfilling the lodge’s role in the Strategic Plan of the Order of the Arrow of being an integral part of the council. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his unit. OA Troop Representative Duties: • Attends troop and chapter or lodge meetings regularly as a youth representative of the troop and Order. • Serves as a two-way communication link between the troop and the lodge or chapter. • Arranges with the lodge or chapter election team to conduct an annual Order of the Arrow election for the troop at a time approved by the Patrol Leaders Council. • Arranges with the lodge or chapter for at least one camp promotion visit to the unit annually. • Makes at least one high adventure presentation to the troop, to include the OA programs, annually. • As requested by the SPL, participates in Troop Courts of Honor by recognizing: high adventure participation of troop members, induction of new OA members, changes in OA honors of troop members, leadership of troop members, and other appropriate activities. • Coordinates the Ordeal Induction process for newly elected candidates by: ensuring they know the time and location of the Ordeal, providing information of what to bring to the Ordeal, assisting (as needed) in arranging transportation to the Ordeal, and offering assistance (as needed) to the lodge in the Ordeal process. • Assists current Ordeal members in the troop in sealing their membership by becoming Brotherhood members by: ensuring they know the time and location of Brotherhood opportunities, assisting (as needed) in arranging transportation to the Brotherhood opportunities, and offering assistance to the lodge (as needed) in the Brotherhood process. He may also, at the discretion of the PLC, offer periodic training and discussions of OA principles, symbolism, and the Legend as needed by and appropriate for the troop members of the Order. • Leads at least one troop service project for the community or charter partner during the year. May also serve, at the discretion of the PLC, as the troop’s service chairman. • Assists the troop (as appropriate) as a trainer of leadership and outdoor skills. • In all cases, advocates environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace camping. • Sets a good example by: wearing the Scout uniform correctly, showing Scout spirit, and living by the Scout Oath, the Scout law and the OA Obligation. Josh Sain \Vas a personal friend to many of our lodge's members. Josh Sain led an OA trail crew in Philmont in the summer of 97 and was a key leader in the OA youth services at the Boy Scout National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Before becoming ·National Vice Chief, Josh Sain was .an Eagle Scout, a Vigil honor member, won the Founders Award, and was Section Chief for Wa-Hi-Nisa in the Middle Tennesse council. Tennessee Middle The council has set up the Josh Sain Memorial Fund which will be utilized to improve Boxwell Scout Reservation. Side Justin Kuehl, a Brotherhood member, is the official cartoonist for The Dancing Bear. �Winter 1997 Pa e4 Philmont OA Trail Crew The Future of OA and High Adventur e By: Peter Abell By: Ryan Cooper This past summer, our lodge sent a contingent of six Arrowmen to the Philmont OA Trail Crew. These six fine Arrowmen were: Peter Abell, Brian Leith, Blake Rehberg, Jon Grizzle, Robert Harvell, and Josh McNary. While at Philmont, they spent the first week finishing up a trail. During their hard work, they learned the entire process of building a major trail, from surveying the area to finishing up by removing boulders and other such obstructions. After a week of hard, back-breaking work, the Arrowmen hiked a trek which they planned. During their hiking, the crew saw some of Philmont's most beautiful sites and, of course, had loads of fun. At the conclusion of the two week adventure, the group was treated to a special banquet, attended by such officials as past National Vice-Chief Ryan Miske, National Vice-Chief Josh Sain, several adult National officials, as well as a few Senators and Congressman. At the banquet, besides eating great food, the members of the group were individually called to the front to receive nice certificates and shake hands with some of the top brass in the OA. Jon Grizzle, though, did a bit more. He managed to b1ess the crowd with a bit of his well known humor by performing one of his many stunt falls -- he had the entire room laughing hysterically. Overall, the Trail Crew was a blast, and I encourage everyone interested to attend. If you have read about the Philmont OA Trail Crew (only $100), then you may want to experience it yourself. In 1998, our lodge will send another contingent on July 17 - July 31. If you desire to go, please contact Ryan Cooper at (901) 752-0684. Don't worry, the Trail Crew contingent will also be able to attend 1998 NOAC at Iowa State, but you don't have to do both. However, you are highly encouraged to participate in each activity. If you cannot go in 1998, plan on participating in 1999, after that, there may not be another Trail Crew at Philmont. An exciting new program that will be offered by the OA in the summers of 1999 and 2000 is one similar to the Philmont Trail Crew, except it will be at the Northern Tier High Adventure Base, that's right, the canoeing one. Arrowmen participating in this will work on evaluating new canoe routes, building new camp sites, repairing old camp sites, and other tasks which need to be done. More details will be released in the future. Keep in mind, though, that our lodge is tentatively planning to send a contingent in the summer of 1999. Remember, you must be at 1east 16 by the first day of the program but not yet 21 by the 1ast day to participate in either program. Who knows? Maybe an OA work crew program at the Florida Sea Base is in store for the future. The cost of this fun-filled, action-packed, biannual eve~t is only $205 for youth and $240 for adults. Throughout the next year, there will be planned some fund raising activities to help curb the cost of this event. If you are interested at all, please fill out the form below to receive further information as it is released. The Ahoalan-Nachpikin Lodge plans to send another huge contingent to NOAC in '98. It is planned to take two charter busses with T.V.'s and V.C.R.'s. Along the way, there will be a couple stops to view some landmarks and to have fun at places like Six Flags in St. Louis. Once the contingent arrives at Iowa State, the real fun will begin. Our lodge plans on ruling NOAC by winning the national championships in OA Jeopardy, sports, dance, ceremonies, and more. This past month we elected chapter officers and they are as follows: ChiefBrian Leith; 1st Vice Chief- Brian Gallagher; 2nd Vice Chief- Bo Rosa; Secretary- Will Carter. We now have regularly scheduled meetings at the Eastern District Roundtable at Covenant United Methodist Church. At our November meeting we elected to have chapter TShirts for LOAC Returns so look for that in January. We intend.to have a chapter booth ready for LOAC Returns. In December, we had a chapter meeting on the 4th and attended the Lodge Banquet. Three brothers from our chapter were recognized as new Vigil Honor recipients, Ryan Cooper, Neil Gallagher, and Rusty Mckinely. Ryan Cooper took the bonnet of 1st Vice Chief and fellow chapter member John Robert Moss was inducted as the Lodge Secretary. In 1998, our chapter intends to lead the way for other chapters to follow, starting with LOAC Returns. Our chapter will rock at LOAC Returns and on into Conclave where we will take the biggest contingent. I find myself not in only a difficult job to perform, but in very large shoes to fill. Ryan Cooper expanded the Dancing Bear from a 4 page to a seasonal 8 page newspaper that is ranked Top Ten in the Nation. It's hard to come in and do a job like that. But I am faced with the problem to do something better. Should I try to make all the photos in the Dancing Bear color? Should I try to sell classified ads for selling tents and other scouting _equipment? Should I have more cartoon strips, better . articles, what? As your new lodge secretary and editor of the Dancing Bear it is my duty to keep you informed and entertained. I can only do that if you tell me what you like.
