with a salmon-colored neckerchief which has a plaid patch on

a distinctive "woggle," or neckerchief slide.
To earn the right to wear this
conglomeration, grown men
around the world sign up each
year for the Wood Badge training
courses held at a multitude of
sites.
What these adult scoutleaders
must do, according to Tom
Moore, . representative of the
Chickasaw Council of the Boy
Scouts of America and a member
of the Wood Badge staff at Camp
Currier this year, is complete a
"ticket" of 11 "competencies," all
designed to give them a better
grasp of the goals and objectives
of scouting.
They accomplish this by attending weekend campouts,
under · the same conditions as
would the Boy Scouts in their
troops. They are placed in patrols, with patrol leaders and
even a few adults who serve as
"designated adults" during the
training period.

"The idea is for the men to
play the boys' roles, to help them
get a better understanding of
what- they're supposed to be
doing for their boys," says
Moore. "These guys pay $60 each
to take this course, and they have
to give up 192 hours of their own
time to do it. So you can see this
sort of thing would tend to appeal
more to the more 'gung-ho' type
of scoutleader. I do know that, on
a national level, statistics show
that the men who earn their
Wood Badge will stay in scouting
seven years longer, on the average, than those who do not. ·
"The activities involved in this
training all have a very worthwhile function, but we do try to
include some elements of fun as
often as possible. In fact, if some
of the wives could see some of
the things their husbands do at
the Wood Badge camp, they'd

More than one wife may have

Central Bell employe who served
as "Scoutmaster" of the camp.
"We had 57 men signed up for
this year, the most we've_ ever
had in the four or five years
we've held this program at Camp
Currier," says Foster. "But the
night before camp was to start
we had rain coming down in
sheets, and I was afraid a lot of
men wouldn't show up.
''Well, I looked down the road
that Saturday morning, and here
they cam.e, wading through the
mud with all their gear. Of the 57
·who signed up, 56 showed up.
The other one, I found out later,
had the flu. "

MosT OF THE W~d Badge
candidates came from Memphis,
with a few from West Memphis,
West Tennessee and North
Mississippi.
Also in the camp were 17 men
serving as staff, all of them having earned their Wood Badges in
the past. They wore the official
short pants and knee socks of the
Wood Badge uniform, just like
the trainees, but instead of caps,

they wore Smokey Bear hats, to
set them apart from the rest.
."We come in ahead of time and
set up our campsite, to serve as a
model for the candidates, showing them what can be done,'' says
Tom Moore. "We want to impress
upon them the idea of pioneering,
of creating something from sheer
nothing. If you see you need a
table, then you make a table.
, "We even built a shower in the
staff campsite, with hot water
that poured from a bucket into a
coffee can with holes in the bottom, so it would sprinkle out like
a real shower."
The Wood Badge program goes
back to the earliest days of scouting and was originated by Robert
Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy
Scouts, himself.
"He patterned the Wood Badge
after a tribal necklace worn by
the Zulu warriors of Africa,"
says Moore. "The beads they had
actually were the knuckles of
enemies they had slain in battle.
That's what our little wooden
beads are supposed to look like."
Baden-Powell held the first
Wood· Badge training course at
Gilwell Park, England, in 1919.
For that reason, all Wood Badge
campsites traditionally are
named "Gilwell."
The training program includes
mental and physical phases rang~
ing from class· instruction sessions to overnight hikes. Too,
there is a period of not less than
six months nor more than two
years, which follows the training
course and in which candidates
must provide evidence of the use
they have made of their training
in their regular scout work.
Only then is their "ticket" considered complete and their Wood
Badge awarded.

A

TYPICAL ACTIVITY during
the training period is the "patrol
project."
"The way that works," says
Tom Moore, "is that we give each
patrol a card at 9:30 in the morning, and on that card is a project
which that patrol must complete
in a two-hour p~riod that afternoon. All the projects are differ.ent, and they should be things
that none of the men in the patrol
have ever done before.
"They may be told to construct
a teeter-totter bridge or a swinging drawbridge or to set up a tent
on a platform in the trees. To encourage them to use their imagination, we always give them a Iit-

tle story, explaining the reason
for their project Like we might
say they have to put their tent in
a tree because there is a flood, or
they have to build their bridge in
order to cross a raging river."
The patrols are supplied the
equipment they need, such as
logs and ropes, and are given a
picture of what it should look like
and a word description of how to
build it. From there, they're on
their own.
"The .whole premise of this
training is that you don't have to
have somebody right there, telling you everything to do," saysMoore. "Oh,,a counselor is there,
and he knows exactly what they
should be doing. But he is supposed to just stand by and watch
and not offer any advice, even if
they're doing it all wrong. If they
ask him a· question, he will not
give a direct answer, because
that would be defeating the
purpose.
"So they learn to work it out
for themselves. One guy may
know about pulleys. Another may
know about knots. Another will
know something else. Together,
they can get the job done. Even if
the total project is a flop, though,
we stitl don't feel that they have ·
failed, because they have learned
to work together to try to do it.

Generally, though, I've noticed
that what few times the men
have failed, they have come back
on their own time - which they
have very little of - to get it
right. It's a matter of pride."
The trainees, all carrying Boy
Scout handbooks and Wood
Badge ·workbooks under their
arms, are called to assembly and
the various activities by traditional blasts on the "kudu," a
spiral horn taken from an exotic
species of South African antelope.
ANOTHER TRADITIONAL
part of the progra.m is
"SHOWANDO," in which patrols
pick. out men who will "show"
specified specialties to the
assembled patrols and ''do" what
they show - things like how to
pack properly or various ways to
build a fire.
.
"One thing you should pay
attention to these days is long
hair around a campfire," a firebuilding specialist explained at
this year's SHOWANDO. "For
safety's sake it can be tied behind the head with a shoelace."
Even Robert Baden-Powell
would have admired such resourcefulness.

I
Pardon me, Boy Scout leader, but
isn't that, uh, poison ivy?
Central Bell employe who served
as "Scoutmaster" of the camp.
"We had 57 men signed up for
this year, the most we've_ ever
had in the four or five years
we've held this program at Camp
Currier," says Foster. "But the
night before camp was to start
we had rain coming down in
sheets, and I was afraid a lot of
men wouldn't show up.
''Well, I looked down the road
that Saturday morning, and here
they cam.e, wading through the
mud with all their gear. Of the 57
·who signed up, 56 showed up.
The other one, I found out later,
had the flu."
MosT OF THE W~d Badge
candidates came from Memphis,
with a few from West Memphis,
West Tennessee and North
Mississippi.
Also in the camp were 17 men
serving as staff, all of them having
earned their Wood Badges in
the past. They wore the official
short pants and knee socks of the
Wood Badge uniform, just like
the trainees, but instead of caps,
they wore Smokey Bear hats, to
set them apart from the rest.
. "We come in ahead of time and
set up our campsite, to serve as a
model for the candidates, showing
them what can be done,'' says
Tom Moore. "We want to impress
upon them the idea of pioneering,
of creating something from sheer
nothing. If you see you need a
table, then you make a table.
, "We even built a shower in the
staff campsite, with hot water
that poured from a bucket into a
coffee can with holes in the bottom,
so it would sprinkle out like
a real shower."
The Wood Badge program goes
back to the earliest days of scouting
and was originated by Robert
Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy
Scouts, himself.
"He patterned the Wood Badge
after a tribal necklace worn by
the Zulu warriors of Africa,"
says Moore. "The beads they had
actually were the knuckles of
enemies they had slain in battle.
That's what our little wooden
beads are supposed to look like."
Baden-Powell held the first
Wood· Badge training course at
Gilwell Park, England, in 1919.
For that reason, all Wood Badge
campsites traditionally are
named "Gilwell."
The training program includes
mental and physical phases rang~
ing from class· instruction sessions
to overnight hikes. Too,
there is a period of not less than
six months nor more than two
years, which follows the training
course and in which candidates
must provide evidence of the use
they have made of their training
in their regular scout work.
Only then is their "ticket" considered
complete and their Wood
Badge awarded.
A TYPICAL ACTIVITY during
the training period is the "patrol
project."
"The way that works," says
Tom Moore, "is that we give each
patrol a card at 9:30 in the morning,
and on that card is a project
which that patrol must complete
in a two-hour p~riod that afternoon.
All the projects are differ.
ent, and they should be things
that none of the men in the patrol
have ever done before.
"They may be told to construct
a teeter-totter bridge or a swinging
drawbridge or to set up a tent
on a platform in the trees. To encourage
them to use their imagination,
we always give them a Iit-

tle story, explaining the reason
for their project Like we might
say they have to put their tent in
a tree because there is a flood, or
they have to build their bridge in
order to cross a raging river."
The patrols are supplied the
equipment they need, such as
logs and ropes, and are given a
picture of what it should look like
and a word description of how to
build it. From there, they're on
their own.
"The .whole premise of this
training is that you don't have to
have somebody right there, telling
you everything to do," saysMoore.
"Oh,,a counselor is there,
and he knows exactly what they
should be doing. But he is supposed
to just stand by and watch
and not off er any advice, even if
they're doing it all wrong. If they
ask him a· question, he will not
give a direct answer, because
that would be defeating the
purpose.
"So they learn to work it out
for themselves. One guy may
know about pulleys. Another may
know about knots. Another will
know something else. Together,
they can get the job done. Even if
the total project is a flop, though,
we stitl don't feel that they have ·
failed, because they have learned
to work together to try to do it.
m'.rif:S811~- t·
Generally, though, I've noticed
that what few times the men
have failed, they have come back
on their own time - which they
have very little of - to get it
right. It's a matter of pride."
The trainees, all carrying Boy
Scout handbooks and Wood
Badge ·workbooks under their
arms, are called to assembly and
the various activities by traditional
blasts on the "kudu," a
spiral horn taken from an exotic
species of South African antelope.
ANOTHER TRADITIONAL
part of the progra.m is
"SHOW ANDO," in which patrols
pick. out men who will "show"
specified specialties to the
assembled patrols and ''do" what
they show - things like how to
pack properly or various ways to
build a fire. .
"One thing you should pay
attention to these days is long
hair around a campfire," a firebuilding
specialist explained at
this year's SHOWANDO. "For
safety's sake it can be tied behind
the head with a shoelace."
Even Robert Baden-Powell
would have admired such resourcefulness.
-JAMES G. ANDREWS • ••
Before they can eat at day•s end, the men must face still one more
chore- the building of the supper fire.

WEEK-END WOODBADGE
~~GHL Y SUCCESSFUL
A highly successful adult training experience was completed this past weekend, as the Chickasaw Council concluded
its first Weekend Wood Badge Course,
conducted at Camp Currier.
Over 50 volunteer candidates and a
staff of 17 Wood Badge men all contributed to help make Wood Badge Courw
SE-29 one of the more beneficial courses
to be held in the Council. Weekend Wood
Badge is relatively new in Scouting and
this is the first course of this type to be
conducted in the Council.
The practical experience of Wood
Badge, which in this case was conducted
on three different weekends during April
and May, is only the first half of the full
Wood Badge training. All men completing
the practical experience will now begin
work on the theoretical application of the
training. Each man will be required to
write and submit for approval, a "ticket"
that will indicate how successfully he has
been able to put his Wood Badge training
to use in his own Scouting career. The
"11i.,k ets" must be completed in not less
W, six months or more than two years.
fhe Chickasaw Council would like to
have this opportunity to congratulate
those men participating in the course, and
to convey a sincere Thank You to courw
director Herb Schmid and his staff for
their fine work in planning and conducting this training opportunity.
