THE SCOUT OATH my honor I will do my best: do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; help other people at all times; keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. THE SCOUT LAW I. A SCOUT IS TRUSTWORTHY. A Scout's honor is to be trusted. If he were to violate his honor by telling a lie, or by cheating, or by not doing exactly a given task, when trusted on his honor, he may be directed to hand over his Scout badge. 2. A SCOUT IS LOYAL. He is loyal to all to whom loyalty is due, his Scout Leader, his home and parents and country. 3. A SCOUT IS HELPFUL. He must be jlrepared at any time to save Iife, help injured persons, and share the home duties. He must do at least one Good Turn to somebody every day. 4. A SCOUT IS FRIENDLY. He is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout. 5. A SCOUT IS COURTEOUS. He is faithful in his religious duties, and respects the convictions of others in matters of custom and religion. ., �EXTRACTS FROM CONSTITUTION ARTICLE II-PURPOSE: OF BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA CHARACTER BUILDING-CITIZENSHIP TRAINING The purpose of this corporation is as set forth in the original certificate of incorporation under the laws of the District of Columbia, dated February 8, 1910, and restated in Section 3 of the Charter granted by Congress June 15, 1916,as follows-"That the purpose of this corporation shall be to promote, through organization, and cooperation with other agencies, the ability of boys to do things for themselves and others, to train them 'in Scoutcraft, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues, using the methods which are now in common use by Boy Scouts," by placing emphasis upon the Scout Oath and Law for character development, citizenship training and physical fitness. GRANTING COMMISSIONS AND CERTIFICATES OF MEMBERSHIP The Constitution and By-Laws of the Boy Scouts of America authorize commissions and certificates of membership only to those who subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law (as printed on other side), the Declaration of Religious Principle and its Constitution and By-Laws. ARTICLE III-DECLARATION OF RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLE "Section I-The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no boy can grow into the best kind of citizenship without recognizing his obligation to God. In the first part of the Boy Scout's oath or pledge the boy promises, 'On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law.' The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe, and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings, are necessary to the best type of citizenship, and are wholesome things in the education of the growing boy. No matter what the boy may be-Catholic or Protestant or Jew-this fundamental need of good citizenship should be kept before him. The Boy Scouts of America therefore recognizes the religious element in the training of the boy, but it is absolutely non-sectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. Its policy is that the organization or institution with which the Boy Scout is connected shall give definite attention to his religious life. "Only men willing to subscribe to this declaration of principle shall be entitled' to certificates of leadership in carry:ing out the Boy Scout Program." __~= ~ - ~ ~ --- RESPONSIBILITIES (a) (b) (c) (d) OF TROOP COMMITTEEMEN Selection and supervision of Troop Leaders and consultation with them on questions of program, administration and management of the Troop. Provide the necessary facilities for meetings of the Troop. Endeavor to provide an opportunity for the members of the Troop to spend a week or more in a summer camp. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MERIT BADGE COUNSELORS It is customary for the Court of Honor to delegate examinations in special subjects to men who on account of expert knowledge, are especially fitted to conduct the test covering the technical points involved in the examination. The purpose of these examinations is not to secure mere technical compliance with the requirements but rather to ascertain the Scout's general knowledge of the subject; as a result of his own application and study. In other words practical knowledge rather than mere book knowledge is what is desirous. It is not within the province of the Counselor to add or to take away from the requirements HANDBOOK FOR BOYS. for any test as stated in the APPROVAL Scoutmaster, Skipper, Cubmaster and Assistants applications should be approved by the Chairman of the Troop Committee. Committeemen of Troop, Ship or Pack must be approved by the head of the Institution or Sponsoring body. Council Scouter to be approved by the proper Council authority. REGISTRATION FEES If applicant already holds an unexpired registration certificate in another capacity, no fee is required with this application, unless he is ceasing activity in the other capacity. In such case he should pay a proportionate fee to the expiration of this Troop. THE SCOUT OATH On my honor I will do my best: To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. THE SCOUT LAW I. A SCOUT IS TRUSTWORTHY. A Scout's honor is to be trusted. If he were to violate his honor by telling a lie, or by cheating, or by not doing exactly a given task, when trusted on his honor, he may be directed to hand over his Scout badge. 2. A SCOUT IS LOYAL. He is loyal to all to whom loyalty is due, his Scout Leader, his home and parents and country. 3. A SCOUT IS HELPFUL. GRANTING COMMISSIONS AND CERTIFICATES OF MEMBERSHIP The Constitution and By-Laws of the Boy Scouts of America authorize commissions and certificates of membership only to those who subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law (as printed on other side), the Declaration of Religious Principle and its Constitution and By-Laws. ARTICLE III-DECLARATION OF RELIGIOUS PRINCIPLE "Section I-The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no boy can grow into the best kind of citizenship without recognizing his obligation to God. In the first part of the Boy Scout's oath or pledge the boy promises, 'On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law.' The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe, and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings, are necessary to the best type of citizenship, and are wholesome things in the education of the growing boy. No matter what the boy may be-Catholic or Protestant or Jew-this fundamental need of good citizenship should be kept before him. The Boy Scouts of America therefore recognizes the religious element in the training of the boy, but it is absolutely non-sectarian in its attitude toward that religious training. Its policy is that the organization or institution with which the Boy Scout is connected shall give definite attention to his religious life. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MERIT BADGE COUNSELORS It is customary for the Court of Honor to delegate examinations in special subjects to men who on account of expert knowledge, are especially fitted to conduct the test covering the technical points involved in the examination. The purpose of these examinations is not to secure mere technical compliance with the requirements but rather to ascertain the Scout's general knowledge of the subject; as a result of his own application and study. In other words practical knowledge rather than mere book knowledge is what is desirous. It is not within the province of the Counselor to add or to take away from the requirements for any test as stated in the HANDBOOK FOR BOYS. APPROVAL Scoutmaster, Skipper, Cubmaster and Assistants applications should be approved by the Chairman of the Troop Committee. Committeemen of Troop, Ship or Pack must be approved by the head of the Institution or Sponsoring body. Council Scouter to be approved by the proper Council authority. REGISTRATION FEES If applicant already holds an unexpired registration certificate in another capacity, no fee is required with this application, unless he is ceasing activity in the other capacity. The boys who will participate in these activities are acquiring the knowledge and character which rvill enhance their contribution to the community in later years. The Scout Circus is intended to inform the parents and citizens.of Mernphis as to the neaning and purpose of the Scout movement. The proceeds derived from the circus are to be used for the purpose of providing nore adequate camping facilities for our Scouts. There are now 1226 Scouts and )16 Cub Scouts in the Seminole Division. Many L'oys remain trnrerved due to the lack of an adequate number of volunteer workers in the program. On behalf of the Board of Semirrole Division, I want to thank the rnembers of the s:aff and all volunteer workers in whatever capacity they have served and fcrr the development and indispensable contribution to the cause of Scouting.
